Is this a joke? Is it on your “must have” list this summer in hot pink?

I think it’s one of those things that very rich people buy, to show that they can afford to waste the money Blush

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 03/03/2022 07:30

Eh? It is hideous like a folded up bummfly throw quilt .

Buuut . It' making a big song'n'dance about being ethocal leather and down so maybe appeals to the people who want the Brand and show off their Ethical Credientials
(Though it is still leather and down )

TizerorFizz · 03/03/2022 08:10

These padded bags are hardly a new design. It just seems odd to be doing one now. A sort of duvet bag with a leather outer layer.

Pinktruffle · 03/03/2022 10:31

I honestly think it is one of the ugliest bags I've seen. Also real 'rich people' don't buy Mulberry, they buy Hermes and Chanel.

TizerorFizz · 03/03/2022 10:50

Ha! Yes. I’m mystified as to who would buy these. Mulberry are my idea of predictable mum bags at entry designer prices.

You cannot buy a Hermes bag now without an account with lots of previous purchases on it. Then you get on a waiting list and given a chance to buy eventually. Hence the second hand prices are sky high. So DD tells me and she’s well informed.

Pinktruffle · 03/03/2022 10:58

She is right in the case of bags like the Birkin and currently Picotin which is very popular but not all Hermes bags, the less popular are available in stores. They are a rich persons playground.

Mulberry is very available and very everyday person in comparison. I don't mind Mulberry, but I'm not rich. I do come from an extended family of millionaires and for the most part, it's not a brand they would look twice at. Weddings are always a handbag spotters treat (me).

jay55 · 03/03/2022 11:00

I think Mulberry are great at doing practical bags, and dreadful at their fashion attempts.

ShirleyPhallus · 03/03/2022 11:01

Ah, been a while since we had a snobby bag thread

Wagsandclaws · 03/03/2022 11:03

This is true about Hermes, I have only owned an Evelyne and a Garden Party both of which I sold on and the leather is second to none and I do sort of regret selling my Garden Party's on now as they are more expensive to buy second hand in the main.

I live near the Mulberry outlet in Somerset and honestly I think newer Mulberry isn't that nice l, the older stuff was built to last and I've just sold the last of mine on a fb mulberry group this weekend.

Chanel is expensive now ( they've just had yet another price hike ) so the bags I have are the bags I'll keep I think - I do prefer them to Mulberry but I've recently got into some of the newer stuff coming out like Polene - I also love YSL and Dior. YSL is very good value for money in terms of the quality for sure.

Padded bags are everywhere ( the Bottega Venetia cassette bag has driven that trend I would say ) and nylon is everywhere too.

It might seem crazy to pay that sort of money for a nylon bag but when you look at a Chanel 19 in Jersey or Denim retailing at over 4K it does sort of seem not so bad Confused

I've always been a handbag lady ( I've got far too many ) but I also will buy Rebecca Minkoff or Aspinal as much as I'd buy Chanel, it's about the quality and the look as much as the designer.

I think Polene is my current favourite in terms of value and quality though. Sadly I've gone right off Mulberry.

Holothane · 03/03/2022 11:04

Well I’m weird because I love the blue one but that’s me a weird one I love neon pink as well.

Pinktruffle · 03/03/2022 11:14

@wagsandclaws What is frustrating about the Chanel price rise is that the quality seems to have taken a real nose dive. I dont know how they can justify it with the price rises. The quality of vintage 90's pieces completely outstrips what is available today.

Wagsandclaws · 03/03/2022 11:21

@Pinktruffle I absolutely couldn't agree with you more.

I had the most gorgeous little Chanel black camera bag with the original gold plating on that I sold on a couple of years ago for about £500 😱 it was in such good condition I just didn't use it much to justify keeping it.

It's worth 3x plus that now ( same as a boy bag I sold on as well ). People are realising that the older stuff is far, far superior to their newer stuff.

Added to this they have a lot of different bags some of which are ( to me ) horrible and gaudy - I realise I'm probably not their target market though. The Far East luxury market has exploded and they will keep paying the price increases.

They are also placing limits on their classic lines in order to deter resellers and I do think that the price increases are to try and being Chanel in line with brands like Hermes, the problem is that the quality is most definitely not the same.

Pinktruffle · 03/03/2022 11:33

@wagsandclaws Ah yeah, a good quality Camera Bag will go for 2k plus now - and they are getting harder to source so prices are really rising. If anyone has any vintage Chanel - hold on to it, prices are rising rapidly!

I don't like a lot of the newer designs either, I'm not really sure who they are trying to appeal to and it really feels they are not in keeping with the ethos of the brand, but things evolve for the current market I guess. I definitely prefer classic styles.

I would never buy new Chanel now, only vintage. They are definitely trying to 'Hermes' themselves but in my opinion they can not compare quality wise from what I have seen. I am desperate for a Hermes Picotin at the moment but maternity leave and buying a new house means it's unlikely for a good few years. There are some lovely ones on the secondhand market but they retail at 2k and are closer to 4k on the vintage market, people with connections are just buying them to sell on at a profit rather than using them.

TizerorFizz · 03/03/2022 13:31

The iconic Hermes bags are virtually unattainable I think. I’ve missed that particular boat. I do have a navy suede Alexa. Nicer then the current bright pink suede one.

I don’t think it’s a snobby bag thread. Anyone who can spend £1350 on a bag can join in.

Of course it’s snobby Hmm

BoodleBug51 · 03/03/2022 13:34

That bag would be revolting in Primark priced at £5.

Let alone at £1350.

Fools and their money....................

Sexnotgender · 03/03/2022 13:39

It’s awful.

I like older style Mulberry, I’ve got a collection of styles. Nothing in the last 5 years or so has tempted me. The last thing I bought was a Cara.

Chrysanthemum5 · 03/03/2022 13:39

I agree @ShirleyPhallus - I don't know why designer bags are considered fair game for people to shame. Some people spend loads on expensive holidays and happily rack up air miles without care for the carbon cost; some buy cars that use insane amounts of petrol; some live in huge houses on their own. But it's the people who buy bags that attract most unkind comments here.

Pinktruffle · 03/03/2022 14:07

@ShirleyPhallus so what? The title of the thread said what would be discussed, if that offends you in any way, don't click on it.

The title of the thread doesn’t give away any of the snobby comments that are held within it?

I’m not offended in a way by them, but designer bag threads do bring out a rather different colour in people than if someone had £1500 to spend on a power tool, for example

Pinktruffle · 03/03/2022 14:19

I think it does pertain to what is going to be discussed here....

I really don't see why it matters, people are allowed to have interests and discuss them, even if they come of as 'snobby' to others. Just let people be.

Just let people be.

And people are always going to have opinions on threads and the content of them. Suggest you follow your own advice.

RunnerDown · 03/03/2022 14:44

I love some mulberry bags, and own quite a few older ones. I don’t like the quilted ones. There have been quite a few new designs in recents years that I wouldn’t spend my money on.

I also have 2 whistles dresses that I love, but there are many of their clothes that I would never wear. I don’t know any brands where I would be in love with everything they produce.
There is a snobbiness towards Mulberry bags on here. People are entitled to their opinions but the comments made about mulberry are very sneery, and they insult not just the bags, but anyone who buys them . See the comment by @Pinktruffle. And the op. Predictable “ mum” bags ( why is mum used as an insulting adjective), at entry level designer prices. Unpleasant

Wagsandclaws · 03/03/2022 14:58

Blimey a bag thread always has this, look at the other one in active and it's the same thing.

The thing is I'm not being snobby about Mulberry, I genuinely loved their older styles and had lots of them but where I live in Somerset everyone has one and I personally know of two people who have worked for Mulberry who agree that the quality just isn't there anymore.

As I said though the same goes for Chanel, anyone who buys from them regularly ( I'm in several fb pages for Chanel, Dior and Hermes ) will say the same. Uneven stitching, not lasting as long as they should and colour loss are all current problems.

I have always bought preloved then I get them independently authenticated by lolipuff or similar. The only bag I've bought brand new is my lady Dior which I bought from the Selfridges boutique.

Funnily enough I broke my own rule there as I took the train up to london with my dd ( she is 29 and loves bags too ) with the intention of buying a bag either from Chanel, Dior or Bottega. I saw the most beautiful tapestry lady dior in a toile de jouy reverse pattern and I met my ds for lunch with my dd and thought on all the bags I'd looked at and couldn't get the Dior out of my mind.

It's still 8 months later the best and most beautiful bag that i own ( even though it's not leather ) and probably one of the most expensive. I always said I'd never pay that much for non leather but I don't regret it one bit.

@RunnerDown I've got loads of 'entry level' bags - my latest being a mini Marc jacobs leather tote - it's bloody gorgeous and I got 20 percent off as I bought it through very - nothing wrong with 'entry level' if you love the bag and you can afford it, buy it, I use it all the time as an everyday bag.

@TizerorFizz yes Hermes is just too much now. I did want a Kelly 28 one day but they are going up faster than my house is 🤣 I will step back from that as I like the bag but not enough to save for two years plus and buy it!

And it's true, some people spend loads on a holiday. We don't really as have I have horses and dogs and my elderly Mum lives with us so it's hard to go away for more than a night or two as I will usually leave adult Dd in charge, also the comment on fools and their money is quite wrong, on mulberry perhaps yes but right now Chanel and Hermes are just going up and up and the second hand market reflects that! They are a very worthwhile investment.

Pinktruffle · 03/03/2022 15:12

I personally don't like the current spate of Mulberry bags, they are not to my taste but I don't think there is anything wrong with, however I do stand by my 'rich people comment', which was just a response to the comment about rich people spending money on stupid things.

As @Wagsandclaws says, nothing wrong with entry level designer bags at all. My everyday bag is a Marc Jacob's and I love it, it's great quality and I've had it for over 4 years and it's still in amazing condition and I can't say I've looked after it really carefully.
