What do you all think of Jane Birkin's style now?

I mean in recent years, as she has grown older?
I wasn't particularly a fan of her younger style, not my thing really, and her recent choices wouldn't really work well on me personally - but what I DO notice and admire about her is how comfortable she looks in herself.

Does anyone know what I mean?
Her recent approach to dressing is obviously leaning towards the oversized, slouchy, etc and yet it is quite atypical and particular to herself, which comes over as really genuine and interesting. I think she really stands out in this sense.
I love that she hasn't tried to reappropriate the stereotypical 60's look that she was famous for and just does her own thing. She is neither super on trend nor dated.

Pic for one example!

@Jansobieski

I like the first photo but this is the same outfit minus the lovely bright scarf. Close up it just doesn't look as good
The other one has a dark top as well as the scarf, which I think makes a difference too.

I think she looks great and is a classic example of how it’s not what you wear but how you wear it. I would look terrible in that but she somehow pulls it off. I think it’s largely the smile and the confidence though

RobynNora · 01/03/2022 14:35

Chic and gorgeous. Love it all.

mm47 · 01/03/2022 14:42

I think she looks fabulous, she’s so tall and slim she can afford to wear such baggy trousers. It feels like a continuation of her style from when she was young. The first photo is my favourite, the other photo where she is without the scarf and the dark sweater is not so flattering. But that just proves she’s human ie not every outfit is super-flattering. She also looks active and alert and outward looking and above all vital (not crouched over her knitting drinking a hot chocolate!) - it gives me hope what 75 can look or indeed feel like.

Moonstruck67 · 01/03/2022 14:58

I saw Sue Johnston (78 I think) on Sandi Toksvig’ C4 programme Extraordinary Escapes. She came across much younger in her movement, stylish too.

Agree completely. I'd look like I got dressed in the dark. Jane looks fantastic.

I think for me it isnt the separate items she is wearing, or whether i like the style or not, but how she looks so comfortable and together. This is a more ambiguous thing and much more to do with the self than fashion/clothes.

It's a difficult to describe feeling really. It just struck me that she always looks so perfectly 'her', regardless of age. I saw a few interviews years ago whilst looking into some of Charlotte G's work and came away in awe of her 'aura' (not in a woo sense, just this warmth and joy. I would cherish this far more as I grow older than retaining my smoother skin!

It is something money can't buy, although as we all know it sure helps Grin

I thought more 'mrs columbo' than farmer giles to be honest...

Here are a few more images. She just seems to have a radiance, what comes over to me as self love/respect. I can't know this for certain, but that's the feeling. The clothes seem quite secondary to it.

She's dressed like a tramp. She gets away with it because she's beautiful, but the clothes are minging

labyrinthlaziness · 01/03/2022 19:13

She looks great IMO.

She looks genuinely comfortable in herself and in her clothes and a lot of people seem to resent that in women.

QuietFlame · 01/03/2022 19:18

I quite like the look tbh,I’d size down in the trousers though!
To pp who mentioned Sue Johnston,I used to think she looked really stylish in ‘Waking the Dead ‘ ...always wore chunky jewellery and ‘arty’ clothes.

RestingMurderousFace · 01/03/2022 19:21

She's beautiful, it helps.

AnyFucker · 01/03/2022 19:28

I love that look. I wear similar but a bit less out there.

SwedishEdith · 01/03/2022 19:31

I think she looks great but agree with a pp that style is often really about confidence and posture and a big smile.

A580Hojas · 01/03/2022 19:36

As a fat person I always wonder why slim people hide their figures in baggy clothes! It doesn't need to be body con or super fitted but why wear outsized clothes? .

mewkins · 01/03/2022 19:40

She looks great! I much prefer it when people dress like themselves rather than follow the crowd. Christ, when I get to my 70s I'll be in my baggy trousers too. I don't think anyone should get dressed to fit in with the crowd

Pheasantlysurprised · 01/03/2022 19:41

"Tramp/Minging'

Interesting.
I cant imagine feeling so strongly about someones clothes, lol.

As a thin person I never understand why people might expect me to show myself off or avoid loose, comfy stuff. I love 1920's and 30's styles, some of those are loose and not 'figure-enhancing'. Do people truly still care about this shit? Grin

Ha. I’m also a massive Withnail and I fan and agree with you @Pheasantlysurprised! Love the slouchy look.

I think she looks fab. Definitely comfortable and confident in herself and that’s what shines.

ImAvingOops · 01/03/2022 19:50

I don't feel strongly about it at all OP. But you did ask what people thought - not everyone is going to like it

IvorCutler · 01/03/2022 19:53

@Floisme also agree about finding a lot of old guys stylish! I’m often admiring 80 year old’s outfits on the high street 😂

A580Hojas · 01/03/2022 19:56

You invited comment OP, no need to belittle people who are contributing to your thread.

IvorCutler · 01/03/2022 20:01

I don’t see how that’s belittling @A580Hojas? It’s valid. I’m not thin, not fat, but I really don’t aim to wear what is most ‘flattering’. I like fashion and will wear shapes that I find interesting and that I think suit me (not make me look tiny). Why do people need to show off their figures? And why is wearing something that doesn’t show it perceived as hiding?

EllaPaella · 01/03/2022 22:15

I think she looks fantastic. She has a natural and effortless style. I love all the outfits and think she looks pretty cool.
She also has amazing bone structure, a beautiful smile, great posture and a beautiful figure. She exudes confidence which to me is what makes her so stylish.

GettingStuffed · 01/03/2022 22:42

I think she looks really scruffy, trousers that fit and tucked in shirt would help
