is this swimsuit frumpy?

stylehelpneeded · 27/02/2022 18:12

Am going on a sunny holiday break with some friends, many are size 6-10 aged 33-45. One is a size 12-14, I am size 16. They are lovely ladies and incredibly stylish London women. I've not managed to lose my (not so) recent baby weight and am feeling very frumpy.

Is this an awful swimsuit? www.debenhams.com/product/debenhams-skirted-suit_ddd06483

@Creeeper 's swimsuit looks good (can't quite as it quotes an earlier post).
You can see what it looks like on a bigger model than you. It's got some neck line detail which draws attention away from the bum area.

*can't quote

wishtotravel · 27/02/2022 19:00

It's a no from me but because of the skirt. It will make you stand out because it looks like a dress. If it didn't have the skirty bit I'd really like it

LetHimHaveIt · 27/02/2022 19:01

I quite like it, and don't think it's 'frumpy' (hate that word) at all: I think it has a '20s look about it, and isn't, at first blush, unflattering.

That 'thing' from LightInTheBox, on the other hand . . . A 'lovely sarong' won't help it. Prayer and holy water won't help it. It's - unacceptable.

wishtotravel · 27/02/2022 19:02

Not that there's anything wrong with standing out, just that you gave the impression that it wasn't the aim

ivykaty44 · 27/02/2022 19:04

just get a nice bikini, I think they are more flattering than a swimsuit all in one

stylehelpneeded · 27/02/2022 19:04

Corpus - thank you, another into a basket :) It is lovely

Coffee - thank you yes I need a wide sunhat to draw attention upwards :) I have been looking for this also!

I'mtooold - I love the blue white one with a yellow band around the middle, and do have a nautical cover up that could work well with it thank you!

wish - definitely would be happy to blend into the background.

@Pugfostermum

The skirts are dreadful, as others have said.

Something like this would be better with a lovely sarong to tie around your waist when you’re walking about

Fro a sunny holiday break not fro competitive swimming across the Channel.
Liveandkicking · 27/02/2022 19:06

Get swim shorts. The skirt bit won’t be flattering on anyone.

Imtoooldforallthis · 27/02/2022 19:07

My link to shein didn't work but if you search swimsuit and kimono you will see them

stylehelpneeded · 27/02/2022 19:07

Thank you for the links to shorts/tankinis, but I have tried these recently and just felt not quite right. It certainly wasn't reminiscent of me in the 90's with a string bikini top and boardshorts and flat tummy.

More of a 'fat squeezing out the bottom and tops of shorts and massive boobs threatening to pop out at any moment' :)

I think the wee skirt is a mistake and will draw attention to that area. A nice swimsuit or tankini and you will look grand. Honestly, I am petite and while I look good in clothes, I actually think curvier women look far nicer in swimwear. I am in my 50s so can look a bit of a boney skeleton, some soft flesh is actually more attractive on the beach, so don’t feel you have to cover up. I know I can look like night of the living dead but still stick a bikini on because why shouldn’t I? Learn to love your body, I am sure it is beautiful.

MRS54321 · 27/02/2022 19:13

Omg no OP !
I’ve been a 16 and wore bikinis !?

You need to tell us where you (perceive) you are carrying weight
What shape you are
What height !

Without knowing this , I can’t comment on a style that would truly suit you
BUT
-I can’t tell you that high cut pants will make your legs appear longer
-High waisted pants and long line bikini top can define a waist or impression of one
-Primark do slightly wedged flip flops £4 that give you a bit of height and shape , but still totally wearable around the pool
-You’re better tying a sarong around you , if your self conscious-they are back in fashion
-See through /knitted/mesh beach dresses will give you coverage but still suitable for beach and still chic - wear with cool floppy hat and statement sunglasses (or if you are brave , a turban and sunglasses think Liz Taylor glam)
-as above , accessories !!

  • tan and nails will make you feel skinny. I don’t make the rules, they just do ! Grin
Favourodds · 27/02/2022 19:18

Definitely frumpy, sorry.

Search 'beachwear' on ASOS. Beach shirts are a thing and would be perfect, bum skimming, can have it undone or not depending how you feel on the day and are fun/beachy/sexy in a tumbled out of bed to the beach kind of way.

Thinking2041 · 27/02/2022 19:18

The key is a range of really comfy beach dresses that you just chuck over all the time..

You need more than you think as you get them wet fast. But some stylish ones, nice sunglasses; nice toenails &hands, a nice hat and the overall look Is great.
I am very self conscious but also do not like to tan so I live covered up lightly on the beach: I just strip down for the short walk from sand to sea.

timeforteaforyouandme · 27/02/2022 19:20

Just get an over shirt or kimono

timeforteaforyouandme · 27/02/2022 19:22

If you wore board shorts and a string bikini in the 90s just wear short board shorts and a proper bikini top

Imtoooldforallthis · 27/02/2022 19:28

If your looking for outfit recommendations what about this dress and sandals.

OP - realised I don't think I actually did the link I referred to above. I’d suggest something like this ( lots of nice colours , don’t choose black )
My theory is , I have nice boobs , so show them off , and no one will notice my huge bum
Swim skirts , imho don’t hide anything , but say look at me trying to hide my arse
