Suncream for prickly heat

DS 4 struggles with prickly heat.

If you have children that suffer the same please can you tell me what suncream you use. He hasn't got overly sensitive skin in any other way just when he uses suncream within 2 days h'es covered in prickly heat!

Also, any antihistamine recommendations that don't taste vile (looking at you Piriton)

Piz Buin Allergy. Its the only one that works for me

JuneOsborne · 26/02/2022 09:40

Ultra sun (the clear one) it doesn't seem to clog the pores in the same way.

Get to the gp for an antihistamine for it. I find cetirizine better than piriton but I guess it's also horrid as a syrup.

Poor lamb, I know how he feels.

You could also try making up a big hug of chamomile tea and cooling it in the fridge and use the tea as a soothing cleanser for his skin. Very mild and effective.

Sorry OP but Lancaster was the only thing that has worked for my prickly heat - try TK Maxx in April or May for discounted bottles as it’s pretty expensive. In good news I’ve grown out of my prickly heat (when I hit my 30s) and I now like either Frezyderm or altruist if you wanted to try something. A bit less expensive first (I use both on my children but they don’t seem to suffer like I did).

DidgeDoolittle · 26/02/2022 10:13

I get this, it's so miserable. I had to go to a dr in Greece as it was so bad. She prescribed Avene suncream, but only the one with a physical sun block rather than a chemical one. I didn't get on with ultra sun or piz buin.

Just remembered that Liz Earle suncream was fine as well.

Ultimately it's trial and error.

moderationinWumbsnet · 26/02/2022 10:16

Cetirizine syrup is quite nice compared to the others banana. I've tried them all, it's by far the best in my opinion 😂.

Following this thread but doesn't look like I'll find anything cheap that will help me with this issue.

moderationinWumbsnet · 26/02/2022 10:20

Generic Lloyds pharmacy piriton syrup was also strawberry flavour circa. 2020

Puffalicious · 26/02/2022 10:20

Actually Boots Soltan suncream works for me- it's not too thick to clog the pores. I buy the whole range for DC too- one of whom is very pale- and always fine. The clear spray is excellent, as is the matte face SPF 50.

Puffalicious · 26/02/2022 10:22

Fexofenadine hydrochloride are the big hitters for anti- histamine. Request from your GP. They're the only thing that works for DC1. He's suffered his whole life. He gets tablets- not sure what age they're recommended for, though.

DrJump · 26/02/2022 10:42

I'd look for an all zinc sunscreen.

Soltan works for me too.

Try the Tesco one - the sensitive in the white bottle. I know a few prickly heat sufferers who swear by it

timeforteaforyouandme · 26/02/2022 10:53

I suffered terribly with this as a child and discovered after much trial and error of so called sensitive formulations that as other people said I eventually worked out it was the pore blocking that was my issue. I have good skin now though from wearing factors considered unusually high in the 1980s. So with my dd we use still high factor but spray formulations as they tend to be lighter in texture. Got to make sure you still get plenty of coverage though.

gogohm · 26/02/2022 10:56

Boots sensitive think it's called, white bottle but haven't bought since 2020 (wonder why 🤔 ) Smile

I'm super sensitive to the sun and get bad prickly heat. I also take antihistamines these days which helps too.

TheAbbotOfUnreason · 26/02/2022 10:57

I found switching to a non waterproof sun screen really helped.

I find that I can use Riemann’s P50 (expensive so get it when it’s on offer) or the Nivea Kid’s without problems.

gogohm · 26/02/2022 10:57

It's the zinc based one I think

lotsofthingstolearn · 26/02/2022 11:00

So, I've just ordered to the Lloyds syrup as it's strawberry- fingers crossed he'll take it!

I think it's the pore blocking also as actually I am fairly similar- if I use a really high factor I also get it but nothing like he does - but as he's only 4 I can't be so sure and neither do I want to chance it!

TheAbbotOfUnreason · 26/02/2022 11:06

That should read Riemann P20 but the Factor 50 version.

TheAbbotOfUnreason · 26/02/2022 11:08

Children’s Benadryl tastes way nicer than the liquid Piriton (think it’s banana flavoured).

JohannSebastianBach · 26/02/2022 11:08

I use Ladival. However I also stay out of the sun as much as possible and cover up. On the beach I wear surfer t shirt for swimming etc then I don't need much suncream.

LizzieMacQueen · 26/02/2022 12:34

I love the taste of the piriton syrup!

My skin allergy prone children were usually fine with Ultrasun.
