Help me whiten my awful yellow teeth

MrsCornelius · 26/02/2022 08:23

Am feeling shit about myself and trying to deal with some of the surface issues at least - teeth, nails, skin, hair etc. Am on teeth atm 😬.
Can anyone advise best products for home dental whitening?
I’ve done lots of research and US Crest strips sound best, but can’t find answers to all my questions.
If I order Crest strips from US, will I be charged tax and duties and if so how much? I can’t afford £££. Is there any way to buy them in the EU? (Or UK)?
What about water flossers? Do they help whiten?
Do Sonic toothbrushes help? Or is there any toothbrush that’s really effective for whitening?
Thank you 🙏🏼

@Imabouttoexplode can I ask on payment does the Amazon premium charge a monthly amount after? Or is it as one off?

SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 27/02/2022 01:01
@SpinningTheSeedsOfLove you may mean composite bonding which goes over your original teeth . Much cheaper and not permanent
That's exactly it! Thank you so much.

coldfeetmama · 27/02/2022 01:03

I'm just coming to the end of doing the home whitening with the moulds and a drop of the gel in for about an hour a night
Have bought another supply £30 to top up once a month
Very minimal sensitivity
They def look brighter whiter - not tippex Rylan Clark white but I'm happy with them
Worth every penny

Oh I'm not sure. I don't even really understand the question! From memory, I thought it was just normal card payment?

I think I would like to give the crest whitening strips a go!

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/02/2022 07:44

Crest strips hurt my teeth, I didn’t last 5 minutes with them.

I’d go to the dentist and do it properly rather than faff around with products not strong enough to work then end up at the dentist anyway.

They absolutely are strong enough to work. They're not sold over the counter in the uk precisely because they are strong and are regulated. That said, they can cause sensitivity and hurt, so you're not wrong there.
coldfeetmama · 27/02/2022 10:16

It seems that the action of effective teeth whitening no matter which method - causes sensitivity for some - not all
I believe this is temporary whilst undergoing the whitening and should settle so for me it's worth it

CoastalWave · 27/02/2022 10:17

@Campervangirl

Same. I've tried all sorts of home whitening products and nothing worked. I bought a kit from the dentist, they made a mold of my teeth and 2 weeks later I picked it up from the dentist with the whitening past, put a drop of paste the size of a grain of rice on each tooth shape in the mold and wear it over night, did this for 7 nights and boy are my teeth white, not Hollywood white but definitely white, people have commented on how much better they look. Now I just do a top up, when they start to look a little dull / yellowy, maybe once a fortnight. I bought the kit before Xmas and Igot 3 syringes of whitener and still have one left. What I bought was Philips Zoom! Night white. It cost £200 but I would highly recommend it, you can just buy top up whitener from the dentist once you have the mold but you can also buy it on line slightly cheaper
I don't relate to this. The dentist did a mould of my teeth and gave me the whitening gel. 2 weeks later perfectly white teeth.

15 YEARS later - teeth still white!

I definitely don't do a top up every two weeks :S

OP - see the dentist. Anything else is just temporary.

Imabouttoexplode · 27/02/2022 10:18

Anything else isn't temporary for goodness sake. It's 20 years since I did 2 rounds of teeth whitening with crest strips and my teeth are still white.

ABitOfAShitShow · 27/02/2022 10:25

I used zoom at home whitening (dentist-grade gel) which I bought from UK Teeth Whitening, with custom trays that I bought via Amazon. It ends up a fraction of the price you’d pay if you got it from a dentist (in london anyway).

Always get a good scale and polish before starting though. And buy the night gel if you’re worried about sensitivity.

White strips are ok. Nowhere near as good as gel in a tray though.

Oblomov22 · 27/02/2022 10:25

Which exact crest product do you use please? Link gives 6 options and I'm interested to know which one.

One says 8 levels whiter and the other says 24 levels whiter.

The first 3 at the top of the page.

Polanight gel recommended by orthodontist after my braces removed, had moulds anyway so just a drop for 90 mins min a day for a few days and big difference, no blinding in your face white but noticeable. Didn’t experience any sensitivity at all and I had the fear as I can still recall the pain from using crest strips in American 15 years ago 🤪🤪

newnewnew42 · 27/02/2022 22:48

@Imabouttoexplode sorry! Basically is it a one off postage cost? Amazon prime is a yearly fee, I’ve never heard of Amazon premium?!

Are the whitening retainers the same as the ones you get after having braces removed? Wondering if I can use mine & buy the gel treatment?

TwentinQuarantino · 28/02/2022 00:48

I had some moulds made around 15 years ago, will they still be okay to use? I don't think my teeth have changed since. I regularly topped up the first few years but I'm not so sure now which gel would be best. Can anyone advise please?

Dembones292 · 28/02/2022 06:28

For anyone with the shields already made and just looking for the gel I can highly recommend poladay or polanight. Works really well. £17 for 2 syringes.

coldfeetmama · 28/02/2022 06:55

Another thing the dentist told me to be careful of while whitening

Do not use toothpaste with SLS in the ingredients, it fights the whitening process
Which is mad as I found it in every single one of my off the shelf toothpastes that said they could do the job for me

It is not in the Sensodyne ones ( no advert ) I buy the enamel protection one

Also be mindful of coffee tea red wine bolognaise tomato soup curry , the usual high staining food and drink

What we do for pearly whites eh 🤨

BanningTheWordNaice · 28/02/2022 08:55

My teeth were awful when I last went to the dentist - I had an airflow jet polishing and now my teeth are much much whiter, obviously not lightened but the difference is crazy.

Sayitisnotso · 01/03/2022 23:38

Yes I used the retainers and bought the polanight gel

sleaf · 01/03/2022 23:42

Try clip on veneers - www.fabsmileveneers.co.uk - they have changed my life.

Cluckycluck · 02/03/2022 06:58

@ABitOfAShitShow Which Zoom did you use? Was moulding the trays easy?

I've been looking at the Zoom on UKTeethWhitening for a while now but I'm unsure what one to go for or how easy it is to get a good mould fit.

I got this one ‘Philips Zoom Nite White 16% Whitening Gel Triple Pack‘. You have to wear it for 4 hours (or more) at a time. There are faster ones but my teeth are a bit sensitive.

Trays were really easy to do. I have these ones: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00CTQ1106/ref=ppx_yo_mob_b_inactive_ship_o1_img?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&ie=UTF8
