Just feel ugly atm - hypothyroid?

Recently, over the last 6 months or so, i've noticed a change in my face shape. It has become fatter on the lower half and I have lost that smooth taper from my cheekbones to my chin. I'm in my 30s and didn't expect to get 'jowls' yet. Before last year, my face and chin was always very skinny.

I have been told by a consultant that my thyroid gland felt a bit bigger but my blood test is saying my thyroid is normal! Although it has been on the lower end of normal in the past, it has fluctuated.

I have also noticed that I have put on about 6 lbs from what I always was previously and I wonder if that is what is contributing to the face! Even more strange, is that I barely have an appetite and eat 3 meals a day but not much more than that, so I feel like I hardly even eat some days. I would of expected to lose weight rather than gain. I don't feel a significant weight gain anywhere but my lower face.

Has anybody had anything similar and can shed light?

Or reassure me that if it a thyroid problem, has this face thing gone away after you had treatment?

At this point i'm looking into booking fat dissolvers, I feel horrible. :(

I even went to my dentist to see if there was anything wrong with my bite or anything but told all is fine. I'm at a loss.

Wonder if you might try posting this in health section? Might get more knowledge over there of thyroid symptoms. Hope someone can help.

You can ask your GP for a copy of the results to see where they are within the range of normal. I don't know OP, I have an underactive thyroid and I'm not aware it causes weight gain or fat redistribution, I've lost weight, and it also has caused me dry skin and some hair loss.

Our faces realistically are always changing over the years, with weight gain or loss or through ageing, stress or health or environmental factors. I think often once we notice something we fixate on it. I think as we age gravity does take a toll. I'm in my 30's and have no wrinkles but can definitely see my face is less structured than in my youth, as I would expect it to be. I doubt anyone around you has noticed and it certainly doesn't mean you're unattractive.

I'd not rush to have anything invasive done. Perhaps look into things like the foreo bear or nuface devices, or facial massage, lymphatic drainage etc- you can do it at home for free.

Underactive thyroid typically causes weight gain (it's one of the core symptoms including feeling cold, fatigue, dry skin and constipation so not sure why PP has said it isn't a symptom?!?). and can cause the face to develop a moon like appearance.

Your thyroid can also be struggling well before your bloods show any dysfunction. I was getting steadily more and more unwell for about 18 months to 2 years before my bloods ticked the boxes for a diagnosis!

I would get your recent blood test results from
the GP (with ranges). Don't be fobbed off they are your data and you are entitled to them. And post the results on the Thyroid U.K. forum on Health Unlocked. You'll get lots of great advice there.

Thyroids fluctuate too, I spotted dhs under active thyroid in 2006, got fobbed off for years until diagnosis in 2019.
