Hair removal for teen dd - Best starter razor?

xsquared · 24/02/2022 13:02

dd is 14 and has never shaved her underarms or leg hair which she is fine with. However, with a dance show coming up with a photoshoot, I am getting ready for her to ask me about shaving her arms.

There is so many options even for razors. Is a cheap and cheerful set from BIC better than say a more expensive one from Wilksinson Sword?

TIA

electric razor.
dd has a bosch wireless one that she can use dry or in the shower.
very little ridk of cutting herself. plus it's quick.

MerryMarigold · 24/02/2022 13:14

The cheap ones are really awful. They catch, pull out hairs and don't cut properly.

A decent razor with multiple strips, male or female is good. I use dh's! DD has a nice pinky one, but they work much the same as each other. If the hair is legs or facial, I use wax strips on myself and DD.

I would never advocate shaving arms! Shock

Mushrooms0up · 24/02/2022 13:21

The Venus ones are really good as they come with like a built in foam.

Avoid the orange bic ones like the plague.

I'm assuming arm pits!
Blueuggboots · 24/02/2022 13:29

I've got a safety razor for ecological reasons.

pinkyredrose · 24/02/2022 13:30

Venus razors are brilliant, very gentle.

dementedpixie · 24/02/2022 13:32

Venus razor with olay soap strip razor heads

rbe78 · 24/02/2022 13:55

Venus razors definitely. Don't buy those disposable bic ones.

My mum got me an electric one when I was a teen, but it gave a rubbish shave, so I bought myself cheap crappy multipacks of razors instead. Was constantly cutting myself, assumed that was just part of shaving. Got a job eventually, and could afford Venus razors - never cut myself since!

Macademiamum · 24/02/2022 13:59

I use these. Never cut myself with them even when I'm half asleep

Thank you all for your ideas. I shall look into electric option too.

@SNUG2022 I mean underarms, armpit. But suppose dd was extremely self conscious about having really hairy arms, would you judge then?

OP posts:
SNUG2022 · 24/02/2022 14:33

Of course I wouldn't judge! I'm just thinking of the lifetime of upkeep that would take. My old best friend did her arms and they were always spiky and she regretted it. It takes so much time up, all this hair removal. Eyebrows, top lip, arm pits, legs, bikini line (these are just the areas I do).

Danikm151 · 24/02/2022 14:39

Wilkinson sword do a senstive one, 3 blades. Very smooth.
but disposables feel like a right of passage haha

MerryMarigold · 24/02/2022 15:10

If she needed to do arms then definitely not shaving!

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 24/02/2022 17:02

Venus ones are great.

SevernEleven · 24/02/2022 18:44

The Venus one with the really short handle makes it easy to control.

Best advice I was given was to shave using conditioner and to keep skin taut (eg when shaving above ankles flex foot doing back of leg, point toes when doing front and completely bent knee for doing knees).

Newgirls · 24/02/2022 18:47

The veet creams are easy to use and very gentle

xsquared · 24/02/2022 21:38

Thanks for the recommendations and the tip @SevernEleven.

@Newgirls I think they may have changed something in the veet facial cream as last tube I bought left me with chemical burns all over my top lip. I had previously used it for years without any issues.

gogohm · 24/02/2022 22:25

The lidl own brand pink ones are good, or get her a ladyshave

StarlightLady · 25/02/2022 05:31

Another vote for Venus. And use a good quality hair conditioner with it.

Veet can be good, but she MUST do the spit test first.

Sounds awful!

I use the leg one for underarms etc and it’s fine!
