My Dd (17) has really dark facial hair , on sideburns and chin , it's really affecting her confidence, we have tried everything I can think of , waxing, hair removal cream and an ipl at the cost of £180 but nothing seems to work. Is there anything else that we could try , she is getting really down about it and waxes every 2 days her skin is red and sore , we have been the Dr's also to check hormone levels and for pcos but everything came back normal, I'm at a loss, any help appreciated

Please tell her she is NOT alone!

Hi, I ended up with 2 clots in my lungs due to Dianette so please be careful there.

I also struggle with facial hair, I spent thousands on laser hair removal and bought the lumea and totally wasted my money. I now go to a different laser place and I'm seeing good results so I think you need to go find a place with proper laser rather than just ipl

Gnr24 · 23/02/2022 22:24

Thank-you I will tell her that others have the same problem, I can see how it effects her she sometimes refuses to go out with friends and panics when they face time her , she won't answer as she's so self conscious

That's really awful to hear about clots on your lungs , truly scary, thanks for sharing, I will see if other pills are available

I also recommend the pill diannette it works wonders for acne for my teen but I read in the leaflet it also works for facial hair. Telll the gp it's giving her mental health problems good luck

collieresponder88 · 24/02/2022 07:22

Sorry just read post about lung clots ! I took it for 7 years when I was 18 onwards and didn't have any side effects. My daughter started on it 2 months ago has been fine. I guess you have to weigh up the benefits a d the risks

Laser at a salon will not work if you have waxed in the last 3-6 weeks as you have to have the root intact, (and the salon you went to should have told you this on booking) you shave as often as you want in between, so get her to switch to shaving/dermaplaning. I assume the lumea being IPL will work in the same way. Also the bigger the contrast between the colour of the hair and the skin, the better laser will work.

Peachy7 · 24/02/2022 07:35

I forgot to say in contrast to seemingly lots of others, I was on dianette for years for acne with no other side effects

purpledagger · 24/02/2022 07:46

I'm also mixed race and I have PCOS. I was on Dianette for 12 years.

Look for laser on Groupon, as you can often buy heavily discounted sessions. I tried IPL, which is a light based treatment, but wasn't impressed, I changed to laser, which is a heat based treatment and I think the results were much better. I think being mixed race has convinced me that the results with IPL aren't as good.

Do give your DD and hug and tell her that it won't always be like this. I remember feeling the same way.

Also recommend the Philios Lumea, works well on dark hair and fair skin. Shave first, them use it. It has really reduced my hair which was thick and dark

Gnr24 · 24/02/2022 08:13

Thanks for the info , I'm just trying to get through to the Dr's now and I'll have a look on Groupon for laser too

Of course go to GP but Suprano ICE laser (not IPL!) would probably work very fast (took 4 appointments for my leg hair to go).
Phillips Lumea is great too but would take a little longer and isn’t such a long term solution.
I would personally try not to pathologise it with the GP though as it may just be a case of her ethinicity and this shouldn’t be seen as a problem. Lots of cultures teach their girls to remove body hair as a normal process, and it is unavoidable and also not due to PCOS. I have friends as well as family from the Middle East and Med and it is pretty standard to have laser and wax/thread there for women.
