Best straighteners for fine but thick hair

My faithful GHDs of around 18 years have finally given up so I need a swift replacement. I had been thinking Cloud Nine but are the new GHDs any good? Or are the Dyson straighteners really worth the £££ (I have the Airwrap and it just doesn't work for the huge amount of fine hair I have, so I'm reluctant to spend the same amount again.

Opinions much appreciated! I'll need to order them tonight Grin

Anyone?

My faithful old GHD’s died was very bereft at the time

And dh ordered me some cloud 9’s (which are apparently owned by GHD) and in all honesty they are not worth the money and no where near as good as my ghd’s

I’m interested to see if anyone else has some good recommendations

BungleandGeorge · 21/02/2022 10:17

I think the cloud 9’s are better than the GHDs as I find the plates smoother and fit together better. This is comparing new GHDs and cloud 9s, A lot of people say the quality of GHD has decreased in recent years.

If you have the budget, Dyson.

They are wireless, really good and have not damaged my hair.

Botherfreedays · 21/02/2022 11:28

I have vet thick I.e masses of fine hair. I have a steam pod and find it much better than GHDs for styling and much less damaging on my hair.

BoodleBug51 · 21/02/2022 11:32

I share the pain OP, my old GHD's were amazing and lasted about 15 years. I tried a new pair and sent them back, they were such rubbish quality.

I went for Cloud 9's, but they're OK rather than great...... and absolutely wreck your hair if it's highlighted. DD has got the Dyson ones and they're a lot more gentle but you must use a shit load of product to keep the effect. Otherwise mine is back to curling like something possessed within half an hour.

Savvysix1984 · 21/02/2022 11:35

My hairdresser recommended Diva's, which is what they used in the salon. They were much better than my GHD's. I'll be ordering them soon.

rileyriled · 21/02/2022 12:09

Cloud Nine Wide Iron, 100 times better than the GHD's that are out now.

Superjaggy · 21/02/2022 13:52

Thanks everyone, I was kind of hoping that people would be raving about the latest GHDs! What's a steam pod please? And is it cheaper than the Dyson straighteners??

I have hair like yours and bought the normal sized cloud 9s and had been getting on fine with them. But then I rediscovered my ancient wide plate ghds and have gone back to them. They are so much better! I still use the cloud 9s on my fringe though as the wide plates are too wide!
Maybe wide plate cloud 9s would be good too. I need to pay attention to what my hairdresser uses. They’re wide but not sure what brand…

Superjaggy · 21/02/2022 20:28

Oh this is so tricky! So not GHDs in any shape or form, wide plate versions of other brands seem to be better for thick hair... I looked at Divas on Amazon and they are so much cheaper than the other brands but some reviews were terrible. So confused! But not ready to splash £400 on Dysons. Yet...

I was in a similar situation recently, my old GHDs weren’t heating up properly any more (and my hair is similar to yours by the sounds of it). I’ve tried the new GHDs and know they’re not as good so was pretty gutted - but I went on eBay and bought a second-hand pair of the same, old model (3.1) for about £30 and they are absolutely brilliant. Just hoping they last the 20-odd years my old ones did! Smile

HopelesslyHopeful87 · 21/02/2022 21:38

I have cloud9 touch and my DD has wide plate remingtons from argos. We've swapped as her remingtons are so much better than my cloud9s.

Superjaggy · 22/02/2022 06:39

Think I'll scour the internet for old-style GHDs too.... well done on finding them!

Which Remington straighteners does your DD have? If they're cheap I may give them a go meantime!

HopelesslyHopeful87 · 22/02/2022 11:11

They're the remington pro ceramic ones. They're £63 currently in argos but might be cheaper elsewhere. There are standard width plate versions too which would be better for curling with and for the fringe.

Quamora · 22/02/2022 11:38

My ghd straighteners stopped working and I couldn’t afford more so got some babyliss ones half price in boots fully expecting them to be crap but they’re really good! My daughter has fine but loads of curly hair and she has some different babyliss ones that are also really good.

Superjaggy · 22/02/2022 15:35

Just brought home the £63 Remingtons from Argos... the plates don't seem to be in line with each other when they're cold but I shall report back once I've tried them Smile

I have hair like yours and have used Babyliss narrow plate straighteners for years. I wasn’t impressed with ghds

Wiennetta · 22/02/2022 16:46

I have fine hair but lots of it and really like the steampod. It gives me a lovely smooth but not too straight finish.

1haudyerwheesht · 22/02/2022 16:47

John Lewis own! They are brilliant.

Superjaggy · 22/02/2022 18:50

Well the Remingtons are pretty good! It's made me realise how poor my GHDs had become as the new ones are much hotter.

Thanks for all suggestions, I'm still quite curious about the steam pod but they're also quite pricey?

OP posts:
Coffeepot72 · 22/02/2022 19:09

I still use Babyliss ceramics. I find GHDs flatten the life out of my hair, the results are too severe and unflattering
