Foundation recommendations

I never spend money on decent makeup - I choose a random foundation for £6ish at the supermarket generally. In the last few months I feel like my skin is starting to show age (I’m 40) and I can’t get away with this anymore!
My skin is on the dry side, and I’d love a foundation that hides random pigmentation and makes me look dewy, bright. I hate the look of foundation that is obvious, if you know what I mean (often beauty counter ladies have this look, sorry). Any recommendations? I really am clueless but happy to spend more if its amazing!

garnier anti age bb cream.

I recently bought charlotte tilbury beautiful skin foundation. Its light coverage and blends easily. Very glowy though so I do use a bit of powder over.

Sexnotgender · 20/02/2022 15:52

I’m nearly 40 and my absolute go to is Clinique even better glow. It’s light and dewy and just looks amazing.

AlabamaWorleyyy · 20/02/2022 16:29

Thanks all - off to look up all of these!

Clinique even better glow, its supposed to help with pigmentation and it's good for dry skin, it's seemless and has a glow to it.

TheChosenTwo · 20/02/2022 16:49

Do you look after your skin in general? Foundation will often struggle is the skin underneath isn’t prepped!

AlabamaWorleyyy · 20/02/2022 17:21

@TheChosenTwo erm, I wash my face with a cerave cleanser and use Aldi caviar moisturiser?! I’m not sure if that counts as looking after it. 😂

Make sure you use a damp foundation sponge to put it on. Gives a flawless finish.

If you don’t have one the real techniques one is excellent and reasonably priced.

It's very natural looking and doesn't look like you're wearing foundation, not that it doesn't offer cover bacause it does. I just warm it up on the back of my hand and use my fingers.
DedalusBloom · 20/02/2022 17:31

I do agree that making sure your skin is as good as it can be will mean you can carry on using cheaper foundations for longer. Using acids, retinol, vitamin C and good oils if your skin is dry will make a real difference to your skin and therefore how your make up sits in your skin.

Doesn't need to be a massive faff or expensive bit it does need commitment.

Other than that, No7 Hydraluminous is good for dry skin.

I did a quiz at Il Makiage and they sent me the right foundation colour for my skin.

I returned the concealer because it was too light coverage for my dark circles, but right shade too.

Well that’s more than some! I’d try and use a gentle chemical (rather than a physical grainy scrub style) exfoliator in there a couple of times a week and some hyaluronic acid between washing and moisturising. You might see an improvement in the dryness.
To be honest though, I went all in on skincare before really understanding what I was doing and 3 years later my skin is still totally fucked - it honestly used to be absolutely perfect Sad I’m on the road to mending it now but definitely slow and steady is better than throwing yourself in the deep end before you know what you’re mixing on your skin - it sounds like you’re doing more than nothing and hopefully you’ll find a foundation that makes your skin look a bit juicier Grin

I like this foundation too but noticed in Boots yesterday that its gone to up £30.00.

For me, skin care wise, the simpler the better. I use baby lotion as a cream cleanser, Nuxe prodigieuse eye cream and Nuxe comforting face balm, or if I'm a, bit skint Astral face cream. My skins reactive and cannot tolerate anti aging creams or chemical peels. Etc.

MrsHippopotamus · 20/02/2022 19:09

Nars tinted moisturiser. I adore it.

Astral is the fucking shit.

I’m 40 in 2 months and have zero wrinkles, I got ID’d the other week 😂

I absolutely swear by astral.

😂 It's bloody lovely, I ordered some on Amazon as I'm not in the UK and I think it's a bit past its best (slightly lumpy) but it's still doing a great job and my skin is so soft and smooth. I've ordered another back up just in case it sells out! I'm 43 and my skin is pretty good.

OinkyO · 20/02/2022 19:59

All the nars ones are good sheer glow is not overly sheer or overly glowy

I was massively underwhelmed by Nars sheer glow.
OinkyO · 20/02/2022 20:03

@Sexnotgender interesting, it's the only one I've really found that gives the finish I like.

Sexnotgender · 20/02/2022 20:04

Everyone raves about it @OinkyO and it was nice but nothing special.

Much prefer the Clinique one.

I might give that a go then next time in case it's better! Thanks!

I really rate No 7 Hydraluminous. It does what you are looking for.

StillSmallVoice · 20/02/2022 20:12

I'm 60. I have recently discovered makeup primers. Game changing. I've tried expensive and cheap. Expensive is nicer but cheap also works. The make your skin nice and smooth and the foundation goes on better, you need less of it and it lasts longer.
