I’ve just had a another painful shopping trip with teenage daughter, who is feeling rather untrendy at the moment. She is tending to hide away in baggy T-shirts and cardigans & leggings (all in black!) because she can’t find anything to fit her
well.
She’s 4’10 but an apple figure; 30DD, a bit of a tummy but no hips, slim legs.
She doesn’t really fit childrens clothes anymore on top because of her bust, but childrens bottoms halves are too long if they fit her waist. We have tried Zara, new look, H&M and next today including petite ranges and found nothing. A lot of the next stuff is too grown up.
I’ve trawled the internet on asos petite and not found anything she liked, because so much of it seems to be too oversize, or cropped/too revealing. (She’s self conscious)
Can anyone recommend any online shops that do trendy petite clothes or clothes to fit her shape? Preferably with free returns etc as a lot of these shops are recommending any size between a 6 and a 12!!

I have no knowledge op, but I’d look for petite adult stores on top.

On the bottom (as she doesn’t really have hips), it sounds like you need to buy children’s stuff and get it shortened.

Dorothy Perkins, Next, New Look and River Island all have petite sections that might work for her.

I feel your pain. Trying to find clothing for my 4’ 9”, very slim but very curvy 13 year old is a nightmare. I buy her plain leggings in the children’s section. Winter wasn’t awful because she did baggy jumpers in a women’s xs, but she is outgrowing those. I hemmed a lot of sleeves. We are going to need to size up for spring wardrobe and warm weather clothing isn’t going to be as forgiving in being way too big in the shoulders.

I had a similar frame at her age, but was tall so that seemed to help compensate.

Nomorebread · 20/02/2022 15:09

Thank you for all the suggestions. Will check out Dorothy Perkins. Next & river island are ok for basics, but she’s looking for something more interesting than plain T-shirts/sweaters etc. I find river island too dressy (and lots of black!) and next too patterned and floral which she hates. There doesn’t seem to be too much in between.
I had similar issues with my shape at her age but I was 5/6 inches taller which helped!
She wears leggings from childrens wear but finding anything else to fit at the waist is slightly small, when they stop at age 14. We used to rely on zara jeans but the age 14s she has are getting a bit tight. Just finding her one full outfit is a nightmare at the moment! I’ve told her if she doesn’t grow upwards soon then she needs to learn to sew!

I'm the same height and it's been a pain my whole life. Have you looked at Next online? They have Lipsey. Mint Velvet short jeans. Does she like thick tights, denim shorts and shirt / baggy t shirt? What look does she like? I still like Pinterest to make board of things I like.

Nomorebread · 20/02/2022 15:42

I don’t think she’s found her style. I think she always looks quite dressed up compared to her friends who seem to be wearing scruffy 90s clothes. At home she’s happy in leggings and baggy band T-shirt’s. When out she will wear one of two pairs of skinny jeans that just about fit, boots and a black T-shirt and a baggy cardigan. That’s her go to outfit. Basically she’s dressing like me (but always in black) and she wants to dress like her peers!
I got her some trainers that seem to be the fashion at the moment (white) but the baggy jeans and crop top trend just doesn’t look right on her frame! It would be great if she found her own style but really I think she just wants to look like her friends who are tall and very slim.

Have you tried Pull & Bear, motel rocks, bershka? They might be on Asos so may have already seen. What about Urban outfitters? Also Abercrombie is having a moment but can be pricey. I’d be focusing on finding some good fitting and fashionable jeans. More of the straight leg, split hem, or decent fitting baggier styles then pairing them with basic tops. Also a well fitting bodysuit paired with joggers is flattering. Chunkier trainers and boots will help to balance out.

You could try looking at hashtags on Instagram or Tiktok to get some ideas. Maybe things like #midsizefashion and see what age appropriate styles she likes.

Maverick66 · 21/02/2022 08:50

Have you tried Hollister?
Great clothes range of sizes and wash really well.

Bootothegoose · 21/02/2022 08:53

God bless her what a nightmare.

Instead of trawling endless shops can she look on Instagram on some fashion accounts for petite women that she likes the style? Then go on asos and the like to replicate the looks?

I find shopping really daunting and having the idea of what I want really makes it easier.

Nomorebread · 21/02/2022 09:31

Thanks for the ideas. Forgotten about hollister, I have a coat that’s great quality. Never know what size to order from them though as they seem to come up a bit small?
Found a few pull and bear bits but all sold out in smaller sizes but will keep them in mind.
Yes, instagram! She hasn’t got an account but will tell her to set one up, thank you.
I mentioned to her about getting a body, so will get one for her to try. She wasn’t convinced as she hates fitted tops but I think it would help to give her shape. She’s self conscious about having boobs and in general her woman’s body.

She's 15...surely she's old enough to look for her own clothes nowadays than be dressed by her mother?

pastabest · 21/02/2022 09:49

I had similar issues and had to get well acquainted with a sewing machine to overcome them I'm afraid.

Failing that... Primark?

pastabest · 21/02/2022 09:49

Oh and TK Maxx

Lovemusic33 · 21/02/2022 09:57

My dd is the same shape but also has sensory issues with clothes so clothes shopping is a nightmare, she lives in Next jeans (the jogger jeans with elasticated waist) and new look mom jeans again with elasticated waist, she’s just started wearing shirts/shackets with a plain tshirt underneath or one of her horrible logo T-shirt’s 🤣, she’s fallen in love with a pair of fake DM’s from EMP which have now replaced her Nike air trainers. We struggle to find clothes in high street shops as she likes quirky T-shirt’s and she hates clothes shopping (and I hate taking her). Most of her friends seem to wear jeans and shirts or oversized hoodies.

I have another dd who is the total opposite and is really tall and thin which is another challenge 😭. She lives in skinny joggers.

Lovemusic33 · 21/02/2022 10:00

ASOS and Next are both good for returning stuff too, I often just buy a load of stuff for her to try on at home and then send half back.

Nomorebread · 21/02/2022 10:56

Tarcasticswat; We are looking together because she is struggling to find anything she likes and suits her. She asked for my help and that’s what parents do. But thanks for your helpful comment! I’m 36 so not completely out of touch with style.

Thank you for the other suggestions. Yes, a good tailor or learning how to use a sewing machine might be the answer in the future!

Iheartmysmart · 21/02/2022 11:10

I’m obviously much older than your DD but am only 4ft 11 and a 34HH with a distinct lack of waist and slim legs. For jeans, I find G-star fit really well but are expensive, Sweaty Betty leggings are also good - I get the 7/8 length - layering works so I’ll wear a long vest top (from H&M or have a look on Etsy), a v neck T-shirt over the top to minimise boobs, then a zip up hoodie or longer length cardigan. Either trainers or DMs as footwear.

Dungaree dresses are also good as they avoid the waist issue. A long sleeved top underneath and tights.

Avoid anything that’s gathered at the waist or too baggy as it’ll swamp her and block colours on top as they draw attention to the boob area. It’s a difficult shape to dress!

timeforteaforyouandme · 21/02/2022 16:01

H&M (adult but casual/sporty ranges) primark and new look teen range are best for the in between ages. Plus you can go to actual shops. Think you're going to have to find yourself a seamstress for anything special
