How much time do you designate to getting ready in the morning?

I feel like since Covid I just don’t fit any time for me to get ready into the mornings, basically I’ve been WFH and as I had a 1 year old when Covid started I was finding it stressful to get myself ready as toddler was running riot so I have literally got out the habit of getting ready & just chuck on a pair of jeans Blush

I need to change this. Feeling crap about myself.

So if you have little kids & work, how much time do you allocate to getting ready & what’s your routine?

Week day 1hour from getting up to out of the door. It takes me 45 minutes to get dress have breakfast and Do makeup. 10 minute commute so 5 mins to faff, put dishwasher or washing machine on etc

Wiennetta · 18/02/2022 20:34

@LittleBearPad re: drying hair - I leave my hair to dry and style last because by the time I’ve pottered around making/drinking tea and putting make up on it’s dried off a bit so doesn’t take long to blow dry. It’s only shoulder length though so probably doesn’t take as long as yours might!

TheMadGardener · 18/02/2022 20:35

Thank you @KitDeLuca
These people who get ready in 20 mins, do you not have breakfast?? I would pass out without breakfast, and there's certainly no opportunity to eat breakfast once I get to the school where I work!!

DelurkingAJ · 18/02/2022 20:39

Alarm 6:45, out of bed by 7:00. If a not WFH day all four of us breakfasted and out by 8:00. Including packed lunch made for DS1, dishwasher sorted etc.

Just me to get out 30 minutes tops. 10 minute shower, teeth, moisturiser. Dress and put in contacts whilst hair gets dry enough to brush (10 minutes). 5 minutes for coffee and toast.

LiveFromNewYork · 18/02/2022 20:54

It takes me at least an hour and can't even work out why! 5 mins shower, 10 mins make up, 10 mins hair, 10 mins picking an outfit, then a lot of faffing around packing my bag and getting all my layers on, definitely takes less time in summer. Don't have kids, would have to prepare in the evening.

JamieNotJames · 18/02/2022 21:10

If in the office up alarm at 6:45, up at 7. Shower, make up, straighten hair, prep breakfast to take in and then out the house for 7:45.
If hair needs washing up 15 mins earlier.
DH does majority of kids in the morning. I may chip in with heating a bowl of porridge for them or tying DDs hair if I have enough time.

If I'm working from home I get up 7:30 and leisurely get dressed while getting the kids ready. I don't spruce up as much as I would going in the office so will also have time for a bit of housework and then sign on for 9am

Notwithittoday · 18/02/2022 21:16

Probably an hour. Two if it’s hair washing day. I don’t have time but I sort of do it in bits. I shower, dress and blowdry my fringe first thing which is prob 30 mins . After the school run I put makeup on and might straighten my hair which takes another 30 mins.

nanbread · 18/02/2022 21:17

I'm v minimal / quick / wear hats a lot Grin

5 min shower / teeth / face
About 3 mins getting dressed (usually decide the night before, unless I'm chucking on joggers)
About 5 mins makeup

If I need to wash and dry my hair, add 10 mins

Lucked · 18/02/2022 21:24

30-40 mins including shower and washing and drying hair.

I jump in the shower immediately after I wake up but then sort kids and what not so hair isn’t sodding wet.

We organise everything everyone is wearing the next day the night before. School bags and stuff are all sorted and left at the door. Most importantly me and DH work as a team. I obviously take longer than DH to get ready so he spends longer herding the kids.

EffYouSeeKaye · 18/02/2022 21:24

15-20 mins.
Shower / wash hair the night before. Also pack all school & work bags, choose work outfit and set the kitchen up for breakfast the night before.

In the morning, wake up 30 minutes before the kids. Brush teeth, get dressed (5 mins). Fix hair and apply make-up (10 mins). Breakfast (5 mins).

Then wake the kids and sort them out once I’m good to go.

It’s the prep the night before that’s made all the difference.

mariotime · 18/02/2022 21:31

If I shower then 60-90 mins.
If it's a batiste day then I can do 30-45.

Danikm151 · 18/02/2022 21:36

10-20 minutes. I have a 1 year old.
Up at 6:45. Nappy change and Milk, cup of tea for me. After hey duggee(7:15) we go up stairs to brush teeth and wash face. I do my hair(usually just a pony tail) back downstairs get dressed- him first then me. Out the door by 7:45. He eats breakfast at nursery and I eat at work.
I always get clothes and bags ready the night before, laid out on the arm chair ready.
Pre child it would be an hour and a half. 🤣 including breakfast.

TooManyPJs · 18/02/2022 21:38

@Diditopknot

15-20 minutes, shower, hair wash teeth clean, dry and straighten hair, dressed, coat on, shoes on, out the door. I only have me to get ready.
How on earth do you do all that in 15-20mins!?!
Fizio · 18/02/2022 21:39

I get up 2 hours before I leave the house to do morning routine bits and DC packed lunch, then 1.5 hours from shower to leaving the house. Shower 10 mins, skincare and makeup 45 mins (wish I didn’t need to but don’t feel confident without it), hair 15 mins, then sorting dogs and saying goodbye to DC and making coffee and snacks to take before running out the house.

hugoagogo · 18/02/2022 21:49

About an hour and a half. About 40 minutes of that is just drinking coffee.
I am quicker at the weekend as I don't have to make lunch/tea.

hemhem · 18/02/2022 21:51

I do as much as possible the night before once kids are asleep. I have a 7yr old and 4yr old. On work days I get up at 6.45, 5mins shower, 10mins dry/staighten hair if needed, 5minsclothes on and 10minsfor makeup and 10mins for faffing or something I've forgotten to pack the night before. I get kids up and dressed at 7.30, they are usually downstarirs having breakfast by 7.50 and I leave for work/nursery/school run at 8.30. Kids have breakfast at the table and i buzz about serving them and usually manage a quick bowl of museli or bit of toast and some juice before leaving. I have a proper cup of tea when I get to work and I feel I've earnt it by then, especially wranging DC2 into their clothes, concentrsting on eating and then all the extra winter gear to walk to nursery! I have a spare makeup bag at work so can skip that step at home if needed and my clothes and hair are smart but usually pretty basic, like black trousers, black knitted top and grey scarf!

Justleaveitblankthen · 18/02/2022 21:54

I take a comfortable relaxed hour every day, but admittedly this includes lots of pet - and my own - interruptions and distractions ( letting pets in/out/in again, coffees, etc Grin )

45 mins. That includes two cups of tea and making breakfast to take to work as well as all the dressing/makeup etc. I usually rummage in laundry bins and put a wash on in the morning too.

SmellyWellyWoo · 18/02/2022 22:02

I have very early starts so shower at night to save time. I always have breakfast though- just toast so it's quick. there's probably about half an hour between me getting up and leaving the house. Get my clothes out/dinner ready etc the night before. I set off about 6.15am so every second in bed counts!

SmellyWellyWoo · 18/02/2022 22:03

And I set off before the kids get up- DP sorts them out.

HardbackWriter · 18/02/2022 22:03

I can't quite work out if you're asking about morning routines in general or specifically how long people spend getting themselves ready? It takes me between 1hr30 and 1hr45 between getting up and leaving the house (for the nursery run, I then come back to WFH) but only around 20 minutes of that is spent on me (showering, dressing, 3 minutes of make-up - I air dry my hair). The rest is wrangling a 3 year old and a 1 year old! I try and always be totally ready before they're up - it's a real faff and stress if I have to shower and get myself ready with them awake and trying to cause havoc.

HardbackWriter · 18/02/2022 22:06

I don't eat breakfast - I do 16/8 fasting so break my fast with a milky coffee at 11 and then have lunch at 12. It obviously isn't why I do it but I do find it helps my mornings a lot that I just feed the baby his porridge without trying to feed myself with my other hand now!
gingerhills · 18/02/2022 22:06

About 30 mins - 10 mins shower and hair wash, 5 mins dry hair, 10 mins make up, 5 mins getting dressed

Gintime74 · 18/02/2022 22:11

30 minutes on a week day, get up at 4.45 , shower, dry shampoo for hair if needed (wash hair evenings ), moisturise, makeup, cup of tea, get dressed. Out of the door by 5.15.
Weekends, I spend hours soaking in the bath, face masks, hair masks etc.
On the odd occasion that I start work later and have to get ready with DH and kids this does not work at all.
