Nice brands for mid-50s man

Trying to re-hash DH's weekend/holiday wardrobe via a couple of birthday presents etc, but I'm rather clueless about what brands would be considered appropriate.
55, in quite good shape, no belly on him (😡), laid back character. Priority would be nice t-shirts, casual shirts, maybe joggers (they might not get worn though).
Any suggestions of brands/ranges to look at? I'm out this morning so will check in on return.

Joe Brown's model all their men's clothes on rather attractive 50 something men so maybe have a look there

ExConstance · 17/02/2022 11:30

My DH is slender and finds a lot of the non logo Superdry things look good on him - jeans and jumpers. I buy Ted Baker shirts, Hugo Boss casual trousers and FatFace shorts, because he likes lots of pockets. Komodo has nice things too if you are looking for something organic.

ExConstance · 17/02/2022 11:37

Joe Brown's mens clothes look rather good, and the models! I will show DH the summer jacket, just what he needs for our long postponed holiday this year.

Thisismynewname123 · 17/02/2022 12:58

I just checked out the Joe Brown's website just to look at the models🤣 . They do like a man of a certain age with a beard!

HiDay · 17/02/2022 16:25

Depends on how much you want to spend.

My DP ( similar age) watches the sports pundits and presenters.
who often wear Paul Smith, Oliver Sweeney, Hugo Boss.

Boots - the original British made Dr Martin's - Solovair.

For casual outdoor he buys from Gandy's - good quality and profits support a charity. ( two brothers who own Gandy's were orphaned as children, in the Boxing Day tsunami )

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 17/02/2022 16:28

DH is outdoorsy, slim and late 40s. Gets causal wear from Patagonia, Rapanui and Howies. Bit of Alpkit.

Etinoxaurus · 17/02/2022 16:28

What @HiDay says!
Please don’t put him in joggers (clutches pearls)

Mercurial123 · 17/02/2022 16:31

Otrium always has a good selection of Belstaff at reasonable prices. Also Joseph and Reiss.

ApolloandDaphne · 17/02/2022 16:37

My DH is in his mid 50s and he wouldn't wear anything from Joe Browns. He likes his clothes more classic. Hugo Boss chinos, fine wool sweaters etc. He recently discovered Uniqlo and bought a lot of their sweaters and shirts.

BradleyCooperwillbemine · 17/02/2022 18:31

A nice bit of Blue Harbour perhaps!

GalaPie · 17/02/2022 18:58

Thanks all. Apols for delay, I went out to Pilates and then the day just swept by...
I don't think he would wear joggers.
Some good suggestions here, I'll spend the evening surreptitiously googling them.

I would say…..if he is a bit clueless then maybe steer him in the direction of what you like? My husband is utterly dreadful at putting stuff together, a few years ago I just decided to buy him a load of key pieces because frankly after nearly 20 years of marriage I couldn’t deal with him looking such a state. I think you can get away with a lot when you are younger, but unkempt at 50 just looks a mess.

My husband had no issues with me doing this and was quite happy with the help.

I bought him chino type trousers from Spoke who do different leg widths for those who do a lot of sport. Blazers from Reiss, Hackett and Ralph Lauren. Also I did find a nice summer linen blazer in Crew. Some T-shirts from RL also. A couple of linen shirts and shorts from Beaufort and Blake. Locke loafers. An actual coat from Reiss. Navy leather trainers. A few lightweight merino/cashmere knits too. Archie Foal and Oliver Spencer if you can afford it.

At least now when we go out out with me he looks pretty good. The rest of the time he is in Patagonia/musto/Rohan generally looking a mess. But I can live with that. Good luck!

MissyB1 · 17/02/2022 19:18

Dh is mid fifties. He wears Levis with rugby shirts on a weekend. And chinos and a shirt from crew clothing for a night out.
Nearly all his clothes are
Crew clothing
M&S
Trespass
Jumpers are from Joules

dannydyerismydad · 17/02/2022 20:00

DH buys most of his clothes from Sunspel and Oi Polloi in the sales.

Risibisi · 17/02/2022 20:01

Paul Smith

De88 · 17/02/2022 23:47

Hugo Boss, Paul Smith and Ralph Lauren all do nice weekend casual wear- polo t shirts, sweatshirts and knitted sweatshirts some funky but not too outrageous at all. Can't go wrong with navy if it's a first foray into new territory

Wiennetta · 17/02/2022 23:58

DH likes Sunspel for tees, shirts and sweaters. Colorful Standard is good for basics too. Nudie Jeans. Some stuff from Folk, Carhartt, Rains too.

Iamthewombat · 18/02/2022 00:02

Yeah, this, exactly what I came on to say! You have to spend a bit more on good cuts and fabrics as you get a bit older.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/02/2022 05:55

Mine has no interest in clothes whatsoever.

He wears:
chinos from M&S or Fatface
Levi's jeans
Casual shirts, mostly checked ones from M&S in a shade to match the chinos, or the occasional 'smarter' one
Jumpers, mostly from Fatface
DM brogues, or Clarks boots.
That's it! It's the best I've been able to do, after nearly 30 years!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/02/2022 05:57

Oh and Paul Smith socks if he's really dressing up!

ZaZathecat · 18/02/2022 10:46

Wow! Just checked out Paul Smith's as he seems so popular, thought I might find something for my scruffy DH. Shirts are from £125-£400 each! Not for us, I'm afraid.

Gonnagetgoing · 18/02/2022 11:33

Depends how much he and you would like to spend and budget.

If budget no option go Joseph with Paul Smith, Hugo Boss, Prada etc. add in Pringle and other 'Jermyn Street' posh brands.

DB wears a lot of Belstaff, Zara, Fat Face, Cos etc.

My boyfriend has a lot of older clothes but his boss buys him e.g. Daks coats and he has some lovely handmade coats but also likes Anthropologie for men and Arket mixed in with designer bits here and there plus Oliver Sweeney and Reiss.

For casual bits it can be anything from Patagonia to Joules to vintage sportswear.

Shoes - again trainers but they vary so much from Veja, NB, adidas, classic Churches shoes etc but DMs or Clarks are good for basics.

Agreed with someone that men need to spend more as they get older and I've been told that quality in mens clothes you need to pay more.

Ex BF used to love a brand called Uth which was an offshoot of Jigsaw menswear and said H&M (back in 2000s) had good menswear if you looked.

Levis jeans are a standby for men but DB's fave trousers were from H&M.

They always have very good sales. 50% off so if you like something, just wait!
DelphiniumBlue · 18/02/2022 17:12

DH likes White Stuff for shirts, casual trousers and jumpers, they are nice quality but fairly limited in colour range.
If you sign up there is almost always a 20% discount.

HiDay · 18/02/2022 21:10

And Paul Smith outlet at McArthur Glen, York.
