Is your hair all one colour or do you have streaks/highlights/balayage?

I have been having highlights since my teens and only discovered my natural hair colour in lockdown (a dull shade of mouse with a smattering of grey.)

I’m getting fed up of the upkeep of highlights and I am thinking of going an all over shade of mid-brown.

What’s it like if you have done this?

My hair is all natural brunette, what this means in practice for me is that the ends are warm chestnutty brown, the top is very dark and makes me look witchy unless I wear make up, and next to my ears are miniature Brillo pads with white pubes.

Im thinking of putting in a few highlights but I honestly don’t know what shade to go for, warm to match the ends, or cool to match the Brillo.

Such fun.

My natural hair colour is also mouse with grey! I get slightly lighter highlights so the maintenance is minimal as there are no obvious roots as such

Mine is also mousey with a few silver strands. Its long, and healthy.
I am finally happy with it because it costs nothing, and got me to switch up my wardrobe and make up to work with my colouring.

I used to colour my hair, it was fun, and I loved trying out new looks.
Nowadays, I'm loving the natural flow of things.
I'm glad I've done both .

I'm mouse with grey, but the grey brings out the red and it looks kind of metallic, my greys are definitely silver.

It's the way you look at it makes the difference.

Natural dark brown hair. I haven't coloured my hair for about 18yrs. I experimenting with a few colours in my teens blonde, pink, highlights etc.

I am starting to get the odd grey hair now 😫 and I don't want to dye it but if it keeps up (which obviously it will) then I'm going to have to give in but hopefully not for a few more years.

I think I'll go for balayage when I start colouring it. I do like that but it can be hard to find somewhere that can do it properly without costing a fortune. I also hate the upkeep of colouring ur hair but well I will not be letting it go grey!

I have luxe lights put through mine. Although going grey the texture hasn't changed thank goodness.

I'm a cool toned dark brunette with a lot of salt/pepper grey. I usually have highlights to blend the grey but in lockdown, got fed up with the roots and went for an all over mid brown from a box dye.

BIG mistake. Took literally 2 weeks for the grey roots to start showing. I nearly shaved it off it was so bad. So now I'm back to the highlights.

Hmm it’s hard to know what to do.

My hair is very dark brown/almost black. I have an ash blonde balayage but no dye near the roots, i started the colour from lower down. This way, you can't tell how over due it is for a touch up. Clever right? Except...now I have brillo (thanks pp for the perfect description) white hairs popping up all over the place. Its fab as the hair inmost post partum is now growing back white. Riiiight at the frontConfused

*I lost

In the summer I tend to get highlights (the sun lightens my hair too), in the winter all over colour. The highlights start to look a bit cheap by late October so I dye over them. My hair has different tones even when there are no highlights so that helps. Agree foil highlights can look a bit obvious these days and bayalage is better but my hairdresser doesn't seem to know about this and I love her anyway.

TabithaTittlemouse · 12/02/2022 13:35

My hairdresser does amazing balayage. It only needs doing twice a year and I get my roots plus a toner every 6 weeks.
I hated the blocky-ness of just one flat colour. My hair looks healthier now than ever before although I probably do take better care of it now because I want to get my moneys worth between appointments!

OldLadyInPolyester · 12/02/2022 20:14

Highlights will blend the grey better and make the odd strand less noticeable. One block colour (especially if dark) means you will get very obvious regrowth as you get greyer.
