Help me with a washing disaster

I bought this gorgeous1940s style dress from The Seamstress of Bloomsbury, it’s rayon, I immediately got a stain on it. I used vanish on the stain and this happened Shock. I hope I didn’t accidentally use vanish for white stuff.

Is there anything I can do? I’m really upset it looked gorgeous on, clung in all the right places covered up the wrong ones.

Any miracle workers on mumsnet today?

Vanish can take out/dull colour. No suggestions, unfortunately- unless you can redye the whole thing? Take it into the local dry cleaners and see if they have any suggestions too.

Onlyeworethisdress · 10/02/2022 10:12

Yes but experience says the Dylon will be lighter on the stain. Thanks for the idea though.

So annoying because I thought ‘oxy action’ or whatever was supposed to be a gentler way to get stains out.

I guess I could put vanish on the whole thing? Or try and do like a tie dye type of effect? That’s not very 40s though 🤔

Thanks I’ll definitely go for a professional cleaning next time at least.

@Onlyeworethisdress, Vanish will do that sometimes. Your best bet with a stain is washing up liquid or white vinegar.

gunnersgold · 10/02/2022 11:32

Did you rub the stain? Or just spray and leave it?

Oh white vinegar, is there anything it can’t do?

Rubbed it in. I think I left it on for too long too.

It's the rubbing that would have caused it . If you use vanish the spray is best as there rubbing. You have taken the colour out sadly .

KirstenBlest · 10/02/2022 13:30

@Onlyeworethisdress, make chips. taste nice Smile

Was it the pink vanish? if it was try contacting the manufacturer and ask for a refund for your dress

dannydyerismydad · 10/02/2022 13:37

DS has a top which is red and white. Don't ask me why, but we let him wear it to Go Ape and of COURSE the white got filthy.

I soaked it overnight in vanish but the red went really patchy and blotchy. Another couple of washes and the red seems to have rearranged itself more evenly again. So, I'd give it another wash or two and hope for the best.

gunnersgold · 10/02/2022 14:10

From vanish website . Leave it 5 min max , the running wouldn't have helped either . Safest option is the spray and whack it on just before you wash . Fairly liquid for all oil stains . No rubbing as it causes the material to change and cause colour loss !

Oh bloody hell, completely my fault then. I’ll try washing it a few times then, thanks all.

Some of the red might wash out to make it pinker but I think you’ve bleached it Sad
Maybe dye it a darker colour?
