Been buying expensive haircare for years, just washed my hair in washing up liquid and it's looked the best it has for years! WTF.

In the words of Amy Winehouse - what kind of fuckery is this? It stripped build-up or what? What could be the explanation?

I've bought Olaplex, Kerastase and Philip Kingsley for years. Today I washed my hair in Palmolive washing up liquid at the kitchen sink and it's looked the best it has in ages! I just suddenly felt like doing it. It's the softest and shiniest it's been in years.

I don't know what to think, I'm feeling a bit twitchy. Hmm / Grin

It was Palmolive, 2 quid.

Yep! I wash with fairy liquid once a month or so. Removes all build up, leaves hair very shiny and silky. Another trick is to do it before dyeing hair so the dye takes better.

One of my uncles used to use washing up liquid and fabric conditioner on his hair. He has amazing thick hair even now in his seventies.

PenelopeFloppyEars · 08/02/2022 18:32

Well I'll be jiggered. It's news to me and I'm no spring chicken.

My mum always used washing up liquid (we were poor) and washed her hair in the stream. It was very shiny and curly. She only washed it once a month.

I imagine in your case it is something to do with removing build up of other products and it would probably be quite drying after a while. I'm definitely trying it though!

Artichokepiglet · 08/02/2022 19:09

I always used a fairly expensive shampoo and conditioner and had to wash my hair every three days because it would start to look greasy. I thought that was the norm, then I was only able to use my partner's Head and Shoulders in the middle of a house move and it made SUCH a difference. I now use only that and no conditioner, my hair looks better than it ever has and I find it only needs washing once a week max.

BusterGonad · 08/02/2022 20:10

I only wash my hair once a week, with Head and Sholders, I've tried Pentene etc but H&S makes it ultra soft. I use the mini conditioner left over from my hair dye, I've never really bothered with expensive stuff unless my hair is really damaged.

citygirl1961 · 08/02/2022 21:23

@BusterGonad: which Head and Shoulders do you use? I have coloured hair and I've heard that this shampoo strips hair colour so I've always avoided it before. I usually buy salon hair care so am just wondering about this.

Weatherwax13 · 08/02/2022 21:37

@citygirl1961 when I had my hair coloured a bit too dark for my liking, another stylist told me to use head and shoulders for 4 weeks to strip the colour a bit before she worked on it. Definitely helped.

Justkeeppedaling · 08/02/2022 21:53

I let my hair grow during all the lockdowns. It used to be in a very short pixie cut for years, but now it's down to my shoulders. I've gone from washing it every day to washing it less than once a week though it might have something to do with getting old - I am also no spring chicken

Because I only wash it once a week it's fine, I dye it once a month to 6 weeks and I actually haven't noticed it striping my hair, and if it does it makes it look more natural anyway as I dye it brown (grey coverage).

BusterGonad · 09/02/2022 04:34

Sorry, I use the one for dry scalp. Dry scalp care (with almonds on the bottle).

BusterGonad · 09/02/2022 05:08

I also quite like Vosene! 😬 I used it growing up and now I've become my mother! 😂

ApolloandDaphne · 09/02/2022 05:25

I used to use expensive products from my hairdresser. Then my head started to get itchy. On recommendations from a thread I started here I bought cheap but mild shampoo and conditioner from the supermarket and my hair has never looked better! It is the Garnier delicate blends oat milk stuff. It is fab!

psuedocream3 · 09/02/2022 07:14

I use washing up liquid to strip the hair of all build up before I do a keratin straightening treatment. Washing up liquid is OK to strip it back when you have build up but it's too harsh for regular use.

PeskyRooks · 09/02/2022 07:41

Can I just be a bit of a Mum here and say if you are going to use washing up liquid or especially fabric conditioner on your hair you must be very very careful to not get in your eyes!
Carry on..

Thanks mum! 😁😂
TabithaTittlemouse · 09/02/2022 07:50

Does it not dry your hair out? I remember ruining my dolls by washing their hair in fairy Grin

I get expensive colours, no washing up liquid is going near my hair!

cookiemonster2468 · 09/02/2022 08:18

It's probably like using a clarifying shampoo which removes build up of other products.

If you do it regularly, your hair will become very dry.

Haroweller · 09/02/2022 08:29

I used to spend a fortune on hair products. Now I use Johnsons Baby Shampoo. It is fabulous !!

They do a colour care version

Mollysocks · 09/02/2022 08:46

It’s good to use as a clarifying shampoo I think OP. Gets rid of product build up.

I’ve never been brave enough but think I will give it a go now Smile

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 09/02/2022 09:19

Baby shampoo once a month is good for stripping your hair of all the product and build up.
