Trainers for casual wear - recommendations please?

Hi all. I’m looking for trainers that I can pair with casual dresses, trousers etc. I often wore Converse in the past but I’m looking for something a bit different now. I’d like something supportive for walking, but that still looks nice with non-workout clothes. White seems to be quite fashionable (and probably goes with most things), but I am open to other colours & to patterns.

The challenge is I need a large size - a 9 at a minimum, possibly a 10 depending on fit. I’m tall, with feet to match, but I also wear orthotics in nearly all my shoes so that can sometimes mean going up a size.

I hope people can help! Would I be better off looking at the big sports brands like Adidas, Nike & so forth, as a lot of high street-type shops only go up to an 8 in women’s shoes, or maybe a 9. If anyone has recommendations for brands to check out I’d be grateful! As someone who lived in trainers throughout my teens & early 20s I am definitely on board with current dress+trainers trend!

I bought a pair of the Giesswein merino runners last year - have you looked at their website?

They do loads of colours. The women's ones go up to a size 9, and there's free delivery and returns. (The men's ones are identical-looking and go to larger sizes, but I don't know if there's any difference in the width.)

I wear mine with casual dresses or trousers. They're really comfortable and I walk for miles in mine.

(Disclaimer - I am old and not stylish).

Thank you. They look lovely but are probably a bit beyond my budget. I was thinking in the region of £80 as my upper limit.

Any other recommendations v welcome!

I love my Adidas Superstars. They go with everything. The ones I have are actually flatform (chunky sole) trainers so give me a bit of height.
You can get them for around £80 but mine were under £40 in the Office sale.

I think Converse are still a good choice!

@user1499609760,

I searched my emails for my order last year, as I remembered I'd got a discount on them.

Turns out that the code I used still works, although it's not advertised anywhere this time! UK25 takes them down to £87.75 and delivery / returns are free.

Thank you @Latara, I’ve just googled Superstars & they are kind of what I was thinking of in terms of a style.

@buddylicious I still love my Converse! And I will still wear them. They aren’t quite as comfortable though since I changed my orthotics (new prescription) so I’m looking to branch out.

@CarrieMoonbeams THANK YOU for the code! Do you find the Giesswein good for walking around? I’m not talking serious hikes, but would take you around a town/city comfortably for a full day?

What about something different to trainers, such as Doc Martens?

tigerbear · 08/02/2022 14:24

I can thoroughly recommend ECCO trainers.
Most comfortable trainers I own.
How about these:

@user1499609760

Absolutely! We have 6 dogs, so do loads of walking. Also we love city breaks and, again, do lots of walking then. I wore ankle socks / trainer socks the first few times I wore them, as recommended, then no socks after that.

Adidas supercourts -pretty much unisex really comfortable and lots of colour ways available

user1499609760 · 08/02/2022 16:40

@buddylicious I have tried Docs in the past but found them heavy, and they cut up my feet (I seem very blister-prone).

@tigerbear Thanks for the link! Interestingly ECCO shoes are often recommended for those who wear orthotics. Those are nice, & in big sizes!

@TakingTheLowRoad I’ll check them out, thanks!

@CarrieMoonbeams Brilliant, thanks. I’d probably wear socks with them tbh just because of the orthotics - not always the comfiest without socks.
