A skincare routine for dry, dull and sensitive skin?

Hi all,

I'm on a mission to find something that will help my skin, I must have spent £100s on skincare with no luck in finding something that will brighten my skin, keep it hydrated, prevent tingling and soreness from acids etc and keep it feeling soft.

I'm prone to breakouts (one spot or two during my period) however it's so dry but the various creams that help with dryness are always tacky and don't sink into the skin!

I need ideally a full routine AM/PM and products ideally nothing too expensive but tried and tested would be brilliant!

Thank you so much!

I use a muslin cloth to wash, just with warm water, and it’s made a big difference in brightening my skin, but isn’t too rough to use everyday.

I like inkey list serums, and just nivea or simple moisturiser, all cheap but great for dry skin. I also use the moisture sheet masks once a week to, and they help boost my skin for a few days.

Have a look at the ordinary’s website, they have a regime builder

I wash my face morning and night with a hot cloth using Nesti Dante Black soap (£6 from Amazon)

I use a five drops of this Rose oil (smells lovely and makes my skin so soft)

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09JJZRQ2R/ref=cmswwrothhapiglttiAYDJRS11CB6F3N4KJ800??encoding=UTF8&psc=1. £10

Followed by Cerave moisturising cream ( the big tub which is about £11 or so in Boots- lasts ages)

Morning and night.

Need to add my skin is sensitive and would be dry but not since using this regime Smile

I have dry, sore skin which stings with most face creams, and my eyes water and sting too. The best things I've found after much (expensive) trial and error, are the simplest - a basic creamy cleanser used as a hot cloth cleanser and removed with a muslin cloth or flannel, followed by blue pot Nivea at night and Nivea soft in the morning.

Sounds like we have similar skin, mine is dry, feeling dull and prone to hormonal acne. I've tried various products from The Ordinary and tried to build my own regime from their advice but it's not really made a difference. After reading around on here I decided to try Skin+me. So far I'm impressed, I have quite sensitive skin so I was a bit dubious as to whether I'd react but I'm 10 days in and so far so good! It's early days but my skin feels brighter and so far I haven't had any hormonal spots appear when I think I normally would. Will try and update once I've finished the month.

Also have a referral code which gets you the first month free (just have to pay the £3.50 prescription fee) - worth a try and you can cancel the subscription if you don't get on with it!

I find Elemis or ESPA fantastic. I used to regularly get spot breakouts and blackheads, but my skin is now always clear since using these brands, and I feel it always looks 'glowy.' I double-cleanse, tone, serum or facial oil then moisturise. At night I use the ESPA Overnight Hydration Therapy. They are expensive but in my opinion 100% worth it (and last ages!)

Less is more, ime.

I love Niacinamide for sensitivity - ordinary do a great serum of it, my skin can't get enough of it.

Rose hip oil as a moisturiser.

I also really like ordinary's moisturiser factors.

I use an oil based cleanser - just garnier micellar water with oil, after washing most of make up off with a luke warm water.

Susu49 · 07/02/2022 11:46

Meant to say too, once skin is happier then you can look to add something else in to regime if you want, but my skin is dry and sensitive (and acne prone) and the simpler the better for me.

I have very similar skin. Dry, sensitive, prone to breakouts. The only and I mean the only cleanser ever ever dramatic to not damage my barrier and leave my skin dried out is Lush Ultrabland.

I bought the blue pot old school nivea moisturiser at the weekend to use at night before putting my retin A on because whatever happens I'll always use retin A and it has been helping with sensitivity and redness.

Apparently azeliac acid is good for redness. I've ordered one from the ordinary.

I also swear by (Holy Grail stuff)
hyaluronic acid from hado labo. It's Japanese and my skin laps it up.

@CoconutAmericano bakuchiol is a fantastic alternative to retinol products, it achieves the same benefits but is much gentler on sensitive skin

Funny you should mention Lush, my face can only tolerate their Dream Cream when it's bad

CoconutAmericano · 07/02/2022 18:00

I shall google the bejesus out of bakuchiol right now @Susu49

If you don't get on with it, there's a gentler version of retinol hitting the markets too. Can't remember the name! But science bods have discovered that stronger retinols don't have greater benefits and that the sweet spot is a lower strength, so keeping checking for alternatives because they're coming out all the time

Buttercup72 · 07/02/2022 18:20

I’m sure inky list does a retinol serum which is quite week and for good beginners 😂😂.

On the aging front, I tried this face mask and it’s fantastic - I looked like I had sunburn for an hour but was worth it, definitely a big difference on my worry lines. www.amazon.co.uk/MONTAGNE-Masculine-Face-Collagen-Product/dp/B07V4FYC96?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

I have very dry sensitive skin and use a balm cleanser (Emma Hardie Moringa), it feels so comforting and smells like a spa! Whilst your skin is a bit damp, apply a hyaluronic serum (I use a Cerave one that's more a cream than a gel) to suck the hydration into your skin and then your moisturiser (I use Filorga Time Filler currently half price on Feelunique) and then a facial oil (I like Agent Nateur Ageless and Emma Hardie Brilliance). I also like to use glycolic acid to help brighten my skin by getting rid of old skin cells. I use Alpha H Liquid Gold in the evening usually every 2-3 days. It works great for keratosis pilaris on arms if you have that too!
