I saw this picture of Dita von Teese and, as always, she looks ridiculously glamorous. I'd love to style my hair like hers, can anybody suggest what I'd need to do this? Would I need heated rollers, curling tongs, a Babylis big hair? Tell me and take my money!

My hair is naturally wavy / curly but holds a style very well.

I think you'd get good results from heated rollers

DedalusBloom · 03/02/2022 16:09

No help but DVT is absolutely ravishing in that photo!

Just a normal curling wand to make ringlets, then brush through and shape with a bristle brush.

I wear my hair like this daily.

dontgobaconmyheart · 03/02/2022 16:17

The little clippy foam rollers would do it but it takes practice I think.

I'd have a look on youtube at easy vintage hair tutorials or 'old/Classic Hollywood/vintage waves/curls for example but I'm sure there are thousands.

I often do a less defined version for day to day on my long hair using my GHD straighteners to put a curl in starting at the top of my ears, pinning while it cools, then brushing out and shaping but to get the deep definition in the dita photo, I think would require more effort and a few product to hold it and add shine.

Thank you so much! I will get a bristle brush, some heated rollers (I already have curling tongs) and experiment.

What products do you think I'd need for that kind of volume and hold? Mousse?

Can't wait to look exactly like Dita in the picture. EXACTLY. Grin

Honestly heated rollers are faff- don’t bother. Just curl your hair with a wand or tong and then the bristle brush is key. You brush the curls against your hand back and forth to create the S wave. Then set with hairspray.

I'd need a hairdresser to get my hair looking that good (I do have the babyliss big hair which is AMAZING on my thick hair but I'd never get such a good, intentional structure to it)

IaltagDhubh · 03/02/2022 21:05

According to Dita Von Teese’s book, she does hers with heated rollers. Personally, I’ve never managed more than burned fingers and slightly warm straight hair with hot rollers, but I am no Dita Von Teese.

IaltagDhubh · 03/02/2022 21:15

Actually, warm straight hair and burned fingers is also the result I get with curling tongs, straighteners and the Big Hair thingy. I don’t know if it’s my hair type or my rubbish technique. The only thing that works on my hair is a proper wet set and brush out with pillow rollers and setting lotion.

Pin curls!
Do them in opposite directions of each other, don’t do the crown of your head and brush them out a bit.
It’s fiddly and takes ages but it’s how it was done in the day.
I used to do burlesque and this is a similar way to how I did it

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 04/02/2022 08:00

Mousse and lots of it!

JustWonderingIfYou · 04/02/2022 08:33

Tongs never look the same. They don't give the volume and it looks more modern.

You need mousse in damp hair. Blow dry roots upside down. Then heated rollers. Let them set. If you want them to really last then you can also set them in pin curls afterwards. So I would take roller out, carefully smooth hair and reroll then clip to my head. Lots of hairspray at every stage. I have very straight hair and this technique has made my waves survive downpours!

Direction of the rollers is really important but I think its something you need to play with as depends a bit on faceshape, parting, natural hair direction, length etc.

I came on to say pin curls and hairspray is how I've gotten mine like that.
It takes ages to put it in the curls though, I sleep on them and brush out in the morning.
It does look great but I don't do it often as it's so time consuming.
It helped me understand why head scarves where such a thing, if you spend so long doing your hair you want to keep it as long as possible!

There's lots of tutorials on YouTube.

Extensions and a hairdresser

JessicaPeach · 06/02/2022 20:03

My hairdresser does this as a curly blow then uses a bristle brush to comb the curls out

bananaleafy · 06/02/2022 20:03

It's unlikely to be all her own hair
