Hair with mind of its own

Over the years I have spent a fortune on serums and cremes of various price tags to try and get my hair to behave. None of it seems to work.

My hair gets very puffy at the mere hint of moisture in the air and even though I've straightened it and used balm it just looks awful, like I haven't bothered. It sounds ridiculous but it makes me feel uncomfortable in my own skin as I don't feel my best.

My hair is quite fine, just below shoulders and naturally wavy but I tend to straighten each day.

I have stopped washing every day and only do every second day now but it can feel a bit greasy.

Is there a secret that I've yet to uncover or a magic product?!!!

Watching with interest as you’ve just described my hair.
Well yours sounds nicer than mine. Which can really only look nice in cold dry weather otherwise the beat way to describe it is…fluffy.

Onthefloor2 · 02/02/2022 23:04

It’s because your hair is wavy and not straight.

Wavy hair is in.
I have the same problem, and was at the end of the teather so went with the wave! I was really surprised because if I style it straight it waves and goes messy, but if I style it into a loose wave, it stays looking good for days!!

Should have done it sooner really. Give it a try!

So hold on - what does ‘puffy’ look like? Like volume on top, volume everywhere or triangle hair?

Not to tell you what you should do but why aren’t you wearing it in nice waves?! That’s hair goals! Admittedly, not yours. But why not? What’s your vision?

This is 'poofy' hair!

It's thick but has no weight. It's not swishy. It doesn't flick!

Some layers might help with the flick

I gave up trying to control my hair many years ago !
I keep it short ( coller length) but it grows outward and up rather than down Confused

Depending on its mood it ether looks like its listening to a 70s disco and dancing along with the music or a startled flue brush !

HappyAsASandboy · 03/02/2022 02:32

I had poofy hair like the picture someone posted.

I switched to this clay based cleanser instead of shampoo and this silicone free conditioner. I now have non poofy hair! They're expensive, but a bottle lasts several months.

This was my hair! It's only because it would naturally dry wavy, messy, puffy if left to its own devices. I use a keratin straight blow dry treatment kit every 3 to 4 months, around £20 a pot which lasts me three treatments compared to the hairdressers £160 a time! It's ot a straightening treatment as such but more a taming treatment to make hair smooth and thus straighter by default, since I started those treatments I've never had a poodle hair day if caught in the rain

Puffincino · 03/02/2022 06:58

@psuedocream3 you can't tease like that. What's the product name and where do you buy it please?

@Nibblypiggotonabus You're not alone! I've been pretty pleased with colorwow blowdrying spray. It's heat activated so you spend a while blow drying into shape but don't need to straighten. It lasts several washes so doesn't work out too pricey although it's £20 a bottle. I use a lot less than advised too. There's a curly version I think?

ihaveonecat · 03/02/2022 09:01

It could be wavy
This is my hair with no product, air dried
Then with product, diffused

@Puffincino I use this one
Brazillian Straight

Nibblypiggotonabus · 03/02/2022 09:38

Wow thank you all for your suggestions. Who knew there were so many of us?

I wear it wavy sometimes but find I need to actually curl it otherwise it's like Sideshow Bob and that often takes a bit longer than straightening as I need to concentrate more!

I'll def be having a look at some of these products. It's so expensive trying to fix isn't it.

I wonder if there's a scientific explanation, a type of hair that clings onto moisture.

@psuedocream3 that's interesting. Do you get your hairdresser to do it?
Also are you able to curl your hair if you use it, does the style hold?

Nibblypiggotonabus · 03/02/2022 09:42

@ABitOfAShitShow
All of the shapes and yet none of them. It's like a big puff ball

OP posts:
psuedocream3 · 03/02/2022 09:46

@Nibblypiggotonabus No I do it myself, it's very simple to use. It's a keratin treatment not a straightening treatment, so it will get rid of all the frizz and leave your hair shiny and silky, but, it's not going to completely remove all the wave, but because you have to use straighteners to seal the treatment in, your hair is going to be straighter as a result. I curl my hair all the time, it doesn't make a difference to that.

Nibblypiggotonabus · 03/02/2022 09:51

@psuedocream3 aaahh ok, I may give that a try. Thank you!!

tabulahrasa · 03/02/2022 09:58

It’s because it’s not straight and you’re trying to make it behave like straight hair - it won’t.

Wavy/curly hair usually needs way more moisture, so it’ll absorb it from the air, and when it does it starts to go back to its natural pattern rather than how you’ve dried it.

The best solutions are either a permanent straightening thing, or to start working with it rather than against it.
