Please help me find decent black trousers!

I'm losing my mind trying to find good quality black work trousers. I work in a smart-casual office, and with more in-person meetings I'd like to add a pair of tailored black trousers to my wardrobe. Something I could wear with a blazer or a biker jacket or a trench. They would need

To not have drawstring or elasticated waist
Not be cuffed
Tapered or straight leg (7/8 length is ok)
Natural material with possibly a touch of something stretchy
Suitable for machine wash and to not need ironing
Look good with boots, loafers or kitten heels

I might be asking for too much. Budget is up to about £100, but they'd really need to last - they would be the workhorse of my wardrobe
Help!

@Pigtailsandall I've just had a look at The Fold - very expensive (twice your budget!) But some lovely looking trousers on there. Maybe worth it if you can stretch for the perfect pair?!

stringbean · 03/02/2022 09:14

The Reiss trousers don't go baggy at the knee - they have a slight stretch to them which helps hold the shape. I'd also recommend the Jigsaw Paris trousers, but think they are dry clean only.

Geamhradh · 03/02/2022 09:39

Hampshires don't go baggy, Richmonds (which aren't ponte fabric) do, and they ride up the leg as well. I like Richmonds but only for summer and more casual.

The Hobbs ones I have (from eBay) would be perfect if they were about 1cm longer.

I've heard good things about Arket trousers- the woolsack (iirc) ones. Has anyone tried them?

toastfiend · 03/02/2022 09:51

Are either of these any good, OP?

I'm a convert to Cos for these kinds of trousers, they fit me well and I find that they tend to be very flattering. You do have to use a bit of imagination, though, as the styling on the website is usually quite odd and I don't know why but they seem to have a tendency to show high waisted trousers quite low on models' hips so that they look really strange and unflattering in the photographs.

The Boden Hampshire ones do go saggy, not the Richmond. They are thick cotton with some stretch

Pigtailsandall · 03/02/2022 12:31

Boden trousers seem to be a real opinion divider! On the plus side, I could but them from JL and I have a gift card there...hmmm..

@toastfiend yes the first pair of COS trousers looks good! I like the wool ones too but my office is boiling - I think they'd be too hot there. I'm going to check these out

@Marbles321 The Fold DOES look good. But as a parent of a grubby-handed toddler, shelling out that much fills me with trepidation. Maybe in a few years.

Marks and Spencers surprised me the other day with a very reasonably priced pair, good thick quality for £35

I've tried both Cos and Arket with high hopes, and there's something about their cuts that just don't work for me.
Maybe I'm just incredibly fussy!

I do like the look of both the Whistles and the Reiss ones here.

@Pigtailsandall I'm also the mum to a grubby toddler, so I understand the reticence to spend all that money!

Marbles321 · 03/02/2022 13:50

@Hb12 ooh those are quite nice actually. Look like a good all rounder.

I find trousers and jeans THE hardest thing to shop for !

They look nice. Might give them a punt. They look similar to Hampshire 7/8s but a third of the price!

Looks like we're having the Richmond v Hampshire wars Grin if wearing Richmonds I always pause after standing up to tug the leg down because it's ridden up and flatten the knee out. Meanwhile I'm in my beloved Hampshires for the third day running with no tugging necessary Grin (don't suppose any anti- Hampshires have any 12L they want to sell me?!)

Hb12 · 03/02/2022 18:13

Yes, I've had Richmonds and like the multitude of colours and patterns etc. Agree with others that they are lower cut, these ait higher on me which stops bagging round my crotch or flashing my pants. Functioning belt loops and pockets too and 3 leg lengths. I have long legs but went for the regular as I like a true 7/8 length.

Only in black and navy for those who like variety though there were similar styles that may well be the same in different colours. I also tried a similar pair that were only £20, but they were thinner. Cut still ok.

I wear this style to death (when in a more casual workplace I wore black jeans in the same cut all the time) so may get another pair.

Southbucksldn · 03/02/2022 18:16

M and S wool silk blend from autrograph are lightweight and cool. They are also tapered and slightly slouchy on the waist.
If you want pricey then Toteme do good ones with a twisted seam.

NotMeNoNo · 03/02/2022 18:32

You want the Jigsaw Paris trousers. They are easy to get tailored if you want the length adjusting.
Or, the Reiss Joanne trousers which are not wool but a really nice structured kind of techno fabric.
Those are my go to boss lady trousers anyway.

Both are long standing styles so plenty on ebay.

NotMeNoNo · 03/02/2022 18:48

Just read back; my Jigsaw trousers are fine in a wool/delicate machine wash.

Freebus · 04/02/2022 10:05

The white stuff ones i own are Sienna trousers. V good

DSGR · 04/02/2022 10:47

I love the Boden trousers and don’t find they go baggy. White Company also has some excellent smart black trousers in at the moment
