I spend £80 and 3 hours every 5 weeks having my hair coloured...and want to cut back on that spend and fitting in 3 hr sessions in hairdressers.

Hair is coloured a dark blonde/light brown... mainly because its very grey. Unfortunately not the lovely steel grey some people get but a white grey, and only grey at the front.

...can any experts recommend an easy natural looking home kit...???

I use garnier nutrisse but my hair is a dark brown. It seems easy and gives a good "natural" colour IMO.

I did have to snort at your "lovely steel grey" though because I hate that and prefer the shiny pure white (which is, luckily, what I have, I'm just not ready to have it yet )

I use Clairol Nice and Easy 114 permanent hair colour. Mine is a dark blonde when coloured (naturally grey and has been since my 20s ) and goes a nice highlighted colour in the sun. Everyone thinks its natural (unless I have roots)until I tell them the awful truth.

My hair is reddish and I use henna from Lush, to cover my grey as I hate the chemical smell of others but when I was doing it the other night DD2 asked why I had poo on my hair

TwoToTango · 30/12/2007 13:28

I use Garnier Nutrisse - covers well - my hairs nearly 100% grey. Easy to put on and doesn't smell much. I get a lot of comments about how nice the colour is.

soyabean · 30/12/2007 13:44

Can I ask a ps to this - do you redo just the roots, or just use another pack on whole head every 6 weeks? Am using Nice and Easy too, not sure between dark blonde/lightest ash brown am trying both.

TwoToTango · 30/12/2007 14:50

I just do the roots - well intend too but as my hair is quite short I seem to cover a lot of the rest of the hair as well. The instructions do say that whatever solution is left after doing roots should be put on and worked through the whole head for the last 10 minutes of application time.

am a blonde and gave up the hairdresser to save money.just so damn expensive.
ok have tried root touch up- not bad but not quite enoough of the goo to do all the roots
garnier nutrisse - is good for colour matching
did a superdrug one yesterday at #2.99 or 2 for #5 which was the best yet. good colour and no visible roots.

then i get a cheap trim at the local hairdresser for #20.

used to cost over #100 at the hairdresser and dh says he can't tell the difference, but i do have straight hair in a bob- not a difficult style to manage

I have used LOADS of brands, usually to change colour rather than cover ggrey. I quite like Garnier Nutrisse too, although I don't go by the brand I go for a colour and I liked RED, really really red. However I did stop doing it as my hair has been wrecked with use and I am now growing it out. But I hasten to add this was due to the strength of colour I was using rather than anything else. IMHO every 5 weeks is quite often, so I would try a root touch up in between, perhaps you could try this then strech out professional appointments to 8- 10 weeks??

imdreamingofawhiteKITTYmas · 30/12/2007 15:15

I've been using Nice and Easy for years and years (don't want to say how many) I retouch my roots every 6 weeks and do my whole head about every 5-6 months. My hairdresser says it's about as good as she could do which I suppose is a compliment as she should be telling me I've wrecked my hair and she should do it instead.

I probably have loads of grey now but as I have never seen any I am in complete denial

soyabean · 30/12/2007 16:10

Thanks people. I have been quite happy with results with nice and easy but have been redoing whole head (about 4 times so far) and feel it probably isnt good for hair. Imdreaming...do you use the special root touch up packs, and if so do you find that the colour matches ok?

gegs73 · 30/12/2007 17:36

I just touch up my roots with a bottle of the normal stuff. I always think the dye just for roots would be a slightly different colour. You become an expert after a few goes

Eve · 30/12/2007 18:10

thanks for all this.

Advice about roots is useful, I should do that as I have my hair coloured when I have about an inch of roots through, hence every 5 weeks, but do think thats too often.

Casting Creme Gloss is great.
