I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I shampoo and condition it every time, try to rinse it all out, use the size of a tiny coin, etc. This problem only started about a month ago, I've noticed every day since that whenever I wash it it looks greasy once it dries after being washed. What can I do? It's getting so embarrassing and making me look like a lazy slob who never showers.

Only condition the ends. Use dry shampoo 12 hours after a wash.

@Spudina

Have you tried double washing? Small amount each time. Salons do it and I’ve noticed you get a much better lather second time. Do you only condition the ends? Don’t rub it into your scalp.
I second this

I second @Maryward’s advice, if you can go a few days without washing this really helps me! Bit grim for those days but so so much better afterwards

The maximum you should be washing your hair is 3x a week and thats if you get really sweaty, but ideally aim to wash it once every 7 days. I recommend using a brand of shampoo and conditioner called Monday if you are on a budget, go for the Gentle or Moisturising range. It doesn't contain any nasties such as parabens or sulphates, and there's no silicones which are just going to coat and build up on the shaft of your hair which in turn is crap because it doesn't let any of the moisture or nutrition in your hair care penetrate and do its job. Alternatively, if you would like to use a professional range I recommend Kevin Murphys Angel Wash and Rinse. Ignore the recommendations for a clarifying shampoo, a clarifying shampoo is going to strip your hair and scalp which in the long run makes it greasier as your scalp then overproduces sebum to make up for everything you've stripped away. They are great however for someone who has short hair and uses lots of wax and clay based products that build up on the hair and scalp.

Always double cleanse with your shampoo, if it feels like its not lathering add a bit more water before you add more shampoo as sulphate free product doesn't lather as well as the ones that have it. Your conditioner should only go on the mid lengths and ends, I recommend you apply it to the ends first and then use what's left on your hands to apply to your mids. When you rinse your conditioner out use scrubbing motions on your scalp to move the hair about so the water can get into every section especially the crown of your head where your hair is naturally the densest.

If you can update me with what product you use after your cleansing routine as well as styling etc I may be able to help more. As change in your scalp is usually 1 of 3 things, you're using shampoo (like head and shoulders) thats just stripping all your natural oil so you're now overproducing. Your hair dryer/water in the shower is too hot and its burning your scalp making your scalp overproduce oil to compensate and heal itself. Or your hormones have changed, which isn't something I can help with even if I wish I could.

As someone with greasy hair I’d go nowhere near a bottle of a shampoo that said moisturising on it!

Some mixed advice OP.

I found the L’Oréal clay shampoo good but it didn’t stop my scalp producing oil,it just cleaned it gently.
The best shampoo I’ve found is the Tresemme green label one, deep cleansing or something?

Double cleanse
Tiny condition on ends
Thorough rinse
Dry well then apply your dry shampoo (and use a night specific one before bed)
Don’t brush your hair much if poss.

I have never been able to wash my hair just once a week, and yes I have tried to ‘train’ it. Some people produce more oils than others.

Jumping Juniper shampoo bar from Lush worked to 'reset' my scalp when it went through an infuriating greasy phase.

Conditioner everywhere first. Then shampoo twice after you’ve conditioned. Also don’t use moisturising shampoo, use one that’s clear, not creamy. Faith in nature is good.

This is a really good clarifying shampoo.

KirstenBlest · 31/01/2022 15:42

I have an Avalon Organics conditioner and it's brilliant.

i wouldn't double shampoo,@Teadrinker11, but make sure your hair is properly wet when you apply shampoo. Switch to a different shampoo, and add a tiny bit of water to the blob of shampoo in your palm, and mix it in before you apply it to your head.
Rinse thoroughly.

I am a hairdresser. It could be silicone build up. Often from cheaper shampoos, especially Pantene, Tresemme, any shampoos with a 'pearly' effect to them. Silicones coat the hair and can be removed by clarifying shampoo (which are clear in colour) you can even use washing up liquid. There will be other suggestions online for removing silicone build up if you Google. In future stick to clear shampoos (eg Alberto Balsam range)
