Opinions on camel coats?

Hi everyone,
I am thinking of buying a camel coloured coat. What is your opinion on a camel coat?

But...Like anything, they only look good if they suit your colouring. I'm an Autumn so on me they look good. A black, grey or navy coat would look dreadful on me!

Do people really believe that??

I've no idea what my "colours" are. I've got black coats, a navy coats, pale blue coats, green coats and a camel coat.

A well cut, tailored coat in good quality material looks good on anyone.

Frumptastic.

I disagree, as I think the colour of it can also affect how good it looks. I have dark hair and pale skin, and some colours bring out my features whereas others make me look washed out. If you are investing in a good quality coat, I think it's advisable to think about the colour as you will have it for a long time.

Neverknowinglyunderfed · 30/01/2022 04:53

I love them but sadly the colour is wrong on me. I have to go a bit darker and got a lovely coat from Zara a couple of years back which is kind of a 'tobacco' colour.
But if you have the right skin tone, camel coats are a classic.

Zengarden001 · 30/01/2022 07:42

I love camel coats, I think they look very chic. Unfortunately the colour is too warm for me. I've had much better success with a cooler taupe colour.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 30/01/2022 08:20

I had a lovely vintage 70s one when I was younger, I felt so smart in it, and it was really warm too. I would love another but it is much more difficult to find good quality wool coats now.

Some people do suit a wide range of colours. Unfortunately I don't. Beige colours make me look washed out. A beige "camel" coat in navy doesn't.

LoannaJumley · 30/01/2022 09:29

I've got a warm toned camel coat, think caramel, it suits me and looks classic. I've tried cooler toned camel coats and I look washed out and ill.

Mintyt · 30/01/2022 10:51

I love them, they always look good

roastingmichael · 30/01/2022 10:53

I love them! I bought a cheapo one this year as I wasn't sure I'd wear it and now want a really good one as I want to wear it forever.

Mercurial123 · 30/01/2022 11:04

I have one from MaxMara Weekend. I love it. It's their cheaper range but quality is excellent.

Mine is Weekend too. I love it

"Cheaper" is only relative to Max Mara!

XingMing · 30/01/2022 15:47

I inherited one from the 1960s, which is reversible and real camel hair. It's a very good cut and shape but the colour isn't my favourite, so it gets worn less than it should be.

IcyWinterWonderland · 30/01/2022 16:25

I have pale pinkish skin, and red hair so I am not sure which shade of camel coat would look good (if any shade would suit me). Does anyone have any ideas?

I have natural red hair, pale skin, green eyes and this is the one I have. It works well with my colouring.

Yes, I agree, it's an expensive coat.

Blueberrycreampie · 30/01/2022 17:02

I have one I bought in a charity shop for about £8.00. It was in a bit of a state with buttons hanging off and a black mark on it. I washed the fur collar separately and sewed on the buttons including a missing one, had it dry cleaned and it looks lovely - it's quite long and fits me perfectly. I looked up the make in line and it retails for about £400.00! I've only worn it once in about 3 years though 😊

grey12 · 30/01/2022 17:03

@SarahBasil

Depends on your colouring imo.
Yes, would look terrible on me
Itsnotdeep · 30/01/2022 17:22

I'm a winter and can't wear camel at all.

I think generally navy, black or grey coats look better, but maybe that's because I'm a winter!

Phrenologistsfinger · 30/01/2022 17:23

Doesn’t suit me at all! I can’t wear camel, beige, cream or white honestly. I’m a navy girl, always!

Ozanj · 30/01/2022 17:30

They can look cheap if you’re not blonde / light haired. It’s in the same ballpark, stylistically, as animal prints. Look ok on white blondes but everybody else has to be a big wary.

RampantIvy · 30/01/2022 19:06

I'm curious as to why camel coats are seen as the epitome of style when probably half the population don't suit the colour. Loads of posters, including me are winter and just don't suit beiges and browns at all.

Are all the fashionistas blonde?

underthebed · 30/01/2022 20:41

I keep buying them, then sending them back. Reading this thread I realise it's my colouring, it just does nothing for me. I haven't found a nice coat at all this winter. I avoid black (mainly because I'm always covered in pet hair) and haven't spotted anything I like in navy. Wondering what other neutral options are out there.
