What's your favourite item of clothing or make up or hair thing that makes you feel/look like you've made an effort without actually making much effort?

I'll go first: mine is a John Lewis navy wool coat (that I got cheap in an August sale). I wear it instead of my usual puffa (with trainers) if I want to look a bit smarter going into town but it is a bit warm.

What's yours?

A floral midi dress form M&S. I’m not sure if it’s the cut or pattern but it is just a throw on, I know I’m going to look good, type of dress. No issues about having to wear certain underwear etc either.

Amazing chunky gold (plated) necklace from Coup de Coeur. It had an oversized clasp with bits hanging off it so you can wear that at the front as a feature or hide it at the back for a simple gold chain look. Elevates everything from plain white Ts to glam dresses

Lurking for inspo

JanisMoplin · 28/01/2022 19:04

A plain black dress from Uniqlo. Can be dressed up or down.

BitterTits · 28/01/2022 19:08

This. I am deeply unfashionable but I wear this for work and feel so much more professional than my usual got-dressed-in-the-dark ensembles. I'm size 16+ so I often feel like a sack of shit, but I think this looks ok.

I have a navy woollen coat too that tidies me up no end. It was from Boden, a sale buy a few years back, cost £50. I lost weight after and now it just looks oversized. One of my best buys ever.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 28/01/2022 19:10

If I haven't time to do anything else, I go for a stronger lip colour than normal, often red. Makes me feel made up without actually having gone to the effort and time of the usual. I'm too old and not cool enough to rock the sunnies and red lip, sadly Grin

I have a pair of Tommy Hilfiger 1990's dungarees. Plain white t shirt underneath with big, white trainers.

They make me feel like a happy, hip hop dude.

timeforteaforyouandme · 28/01/2022 19:47

These all sound good. I would wear that dress, definitely

I thought someone might say red lipstick but it's too bold for me in daytime anyway. No one's said a blazer yet but somehow I can't quite carry them off.

Alas I am plus size and look like tweedle Dee in dungarees but would wear them if I could!

I can wear a pink lipstick though, good idea

My olive green faux leather biker jacket from New Look. I put this on and feel like I look fashionable when the rest of my clothes and accessories are very plain.

wankywomble · 28/01/2022 20:04

I have lots of different belts to make me feel put together collected over many years. If I'm just wearing jeans a belt finishes the outfit or a wide belt with a dress. Just think it's easy and adds a bit of polish.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 28/01/2022 22:16

I always wear red lipstick - it’s just part of my face! If I didn’t wear it people would wonder what was wrong with me. I also always have painted nails, short, and done myself, not in a salon. Both of these things help me feel “done” even if I am otherwise looking like shit.

My best thing is a leopard print faux fur coat I got in the ASOS sale about eight years ago. I know MN is generally Not A Fan but I love it.

ShavingTheBadger · 28/01/2022 22:23

I’m the blazer girl - just a navy tweedyish affair from Joules a couple of years back. A Breton top, skinny jeans (ish, I’m a size 16), baller pumps or converse and a decent bag and I feel passable.

twitterusername · 28/01/2022 22:51

I am a M&S leggings fan, with Seasalt tunic and long line cardigan with any type of boots person at the moment. Size 18, 52 years

Bitter Tits - I love the dress, that is something I would definitely wear if I could find it and has to be natural fibres too.

NoToLandfill · 29/01/2022 00:50

Coral lippy. Not as bold as red. But looks chic, and bizarrely suits every skin tone.

slightlysnippy · 29/01/2022 02:18

We're just about to go back to the hybrid office working, so love these trousers. Wear with smart white trainers and v neck black jumper, super comfy and smarter than jean.

Blazers as mentioned by a PP always look smart. I have an old tweed one, man's, from a charity shop. I upgrade it with a Vivienne Westwood brooch. I have several brooches, which is my 'thing' and I was really touched it had been noticed, when I finished at a job, they bought me one as a leaving pressie. I think it's good to have a 'signature thing' or two.

timeforteaforyouandme · 29/01/2022 11:15

I've been wondering about getting a brooch but I have big boobs so unsure whereabouts to pin one

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 30/01/2022 13:20

It's never stopped me @timeforteaforyouandme Grin Charity shops seem to have loads, as they don't seem to be trendy at the moment. Ask me if I care!

Mundra · 30/01/2022 13:32

Oh, I have the nicest Celtic knot band brooch in silver! I should dig it out.

Mine is also a blazer, but a navy jersey type that's comfy and easy to wear with anything.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 30/01/2022 13:35

Imagine how chic you'll look with your brooch @Mundra!

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 30/01/2022 13:35

I should start a campaign Bring Back the Brooch Grin
