Your thoughts on epilators

I’m thinking about buying an epilator. I hate shaving and I don’t have the time or cash to go and get waxed regularly. I would be using this on my legs. I had an epilator over 10 years ago, while I was at uni, it would have been a cheap model. I hated it and didn’t get much use out of it - it hurt a lot, took forever to do one leg, and didn’t ever seem to remove all the hairs. Have they improved in the last decade? I know I’ll have to wait a little while in between sessions to allow some regrowth, but are there any other downsides? Please share your experiences 😃

All I'm saying is OUCH

RoseMAR · 28/01/2022 18:08

^^ agreed!! Found it more painful than waxing/threading!

villainousbroodmare · 28/01/2022 18:10

Very cheap and easy method of hair removal, genuinely does not hurt at all once you kill all the nerve endings get used to it. You won't get immaculately smooth legs with it though ime.

It's painful when you first start but you get used to it. The ingrowing hairs afterwards are a nightmare though.

ParkheadParadise · 28/01/2022 18:13

OUCH x 100
😂😂

I really rate them & I'm pretty pathetic with pain! My technique is to shave my legs one last time, then begin epilating from the next day. A quick whizz over every day for 3 or 4 days and I'm set. That way I'm never doing the whole lot in one go and the regrowth is staggered too.

Mufflette · 28/01/2022 18:16

I use one under my arms but could never get my legs actually smooth, plus it was painful and took ages! Go for laser instead if that's an option!

anibendod · 28/01/2022 18:21

I wouldn't be without mine.

Whilst it doesn't remove all of the hairs, it gets the majority so long as they are at the right length for the machine to handle. This helps create the illusion of smooth legs anyway as what it misses is so sparse.

You do need to be on top of exfoliation and moisturising otherwise the itchiness of regrowth is unbearable.

Pain is subjective - the first few strokes make me wince but I find I quickly acclimatise. That said, I'm not brave enough to use it anywhere other than my legs!

I agree that it is slower than shaving but results last longer than shaving alone.

Braun seem to be offering a 'love it or your money back' guarantee. It could be worth looking into that?

Painful and useless, ime. I’ve used a men’s razor and Philips Lumea for years now and it’s the best solution for me. Once you’ve got the initial weekly saplings out of the way, you can go months between maintenance zaps with very little regrowth. It’s brilliant, I recommend if you’ve the appropriate skin/hair contrast for it to work.

evilharpy · 29/01/2022 00:34

I used to use one and never found it painful (I never found waxing painful at all either) but it took forever and I got awful ingrown hairs no matter how much I exfoliated and moisturised, and the results really didn't last long enough to make it worth the effort.

DysmalRadius · 29/01/2022 00:37

I didn't mind the pain which wasn't too bad, but I always had tons of ingrown hairs too.

crispinglovershighkick · 29/01/2022 00:47

Shave first, then epilate every couple of days for a week or two, you get each single cycle of hair as it grows in instead of all the hair. Then you can do it whenever, as often as you need to, it won't hurt properly if you're just removing one cycle of hair at a time.

If I ever do it all in one go (if I've let it go all winter and can't be bothered to do it in stages) I take a couple of paracetamol first.

I love mine, barely need to use it anymore.

crispinglovershighkick · 29/01/2022 01:00

Oh and invest in one that has a wide window with a dense surface so it's quicker. I prefer the disc kind, the kind with little tweezers is completely useless and breaks the hair instead of removing it.

The purple Remington in the photo is the one I have, the head has a lot of tweezing discs. The photo of the pink one (for comparison) shows hardly any discs, that will take forever.

This!

Underarms are great but my legs always went like chicken skin the next day so I gave up trying with them. Bikini line is laser Ed with soprano (2 courses and not hair-free). Laser isn’t an option for my legs as the hairs are too blonde. ☹️

Crap and way more painful than waxing
