How do you cover your greys in between getting your roots done?

I used to use those home root touch up kits to cover my greys and stretch out getting my hair coloured at the salon as long as possible. But it seemed to be wrecking my hair, and sure enough when I stopped using them my hair condition did slowly improve. However, I find the grey roots showing so depressing! I've tried hair mascaras and tinted dry shampoos to keep the appearance of grey at bay, but because my hair is auburn these never seem to look quite right- the colour always looks too dark. I find the hair mascaras seem to make my hair look a bit greasy too. I was wondering if anyone could recommend something that works a bit better? TIA!

I have my roots coloured every 3.5-4 weeks, so no need to touch up in between. I’m blonde though so the roots aren’t too noticeable.

Does the salon you go to have a model night, or a junior stylist, who could just do an interim root tint, to keep the price down?

Have you tried this stuff?

I use it for when I need to feel confident about my hair.
It's basically like eyeshadow but goes on well, can be applied topically, and lasts for the day (although now that I've described it as eyeshadow that might work just as well Grin)

I just use the L'Oréal stuff. It's good and it doesn't shift, but it itches after a day so you have to wash your hair more often.

I use a mix of colour wow and L’Oréal. But actually I’m finding that it’s not enough and my grey roots are getting me down now. And actually, the best way is just to reduce the gap between colouring and going no more than 6 weeks

Thank you all, yes I've tried colour wow, but as my greys are getting more pronounced I'm finding its not really cutting it any more! I'll give the L'Oréal stuff a go too. @CrystalMaisie, yes maybe that's one to investigate as well. Thanks again!

Have you considered starting to grow it out? I started 3 years ago doing some highlights so it's not so noticeable and now it's all grown out I bloody love my natural grey, it's all stripes of different shades when straight and in fab condition.

But my hair was in really bad shape through years of colour and touch ups.

I use eye mascara but I don’t really have much. You can find some fantastic auburn shades that will melt into your colour. I do think it looks better for your roots to be darker than the rest of your hair than the other way around.

I use the Josh Wood root touch up stuff, it brushes on.

Another vote for L'Oréal root touch up here. Just be careful when you spray it (put a towel around your shoulders and over any pale furnishings etc) as it can stain if it gets on stuff.
