Does anyone else regularly wear fake hair pieces?

So I am blessed with naturally thin, limp, frizzy hair that needs a lot of styling to even look half decent, and basically never looks good Sad

I always throw it back in a scruffy “bun” but it looks rubbish. I just bought on Amazon a “messy bun” fake hair thing that you put around your own bun. The colour is not quite right so I definitely need to change it for a different colour, but I actually think it looks quite good and made me feel much more “done” and generally almost presentable.

I just wondered how common it is to use these kinds of things, am I deluding myself that it actually looks good when really it looks obviously fake?! (Like when I first discovered fake tan and thought I looked like a total beach babe but I was actually bright orange Blush )

So I was just wondering whether anyone else uses these?

I should clarify that it’s is synthetic hair NOT real human hair

Can you post a pic and then just blank out your face?

RainyDayWellySocks · 26/01/2022 19:26

Watching in case this would solve my frizzy hair woes!

KiteflyingKitty · 26/01/2022 19:28

I tried taking a photo but it looks fine - it’s more I’m concerned it doesn’t completely match my real hair which might be obvious in real life but not in a photo .

I have one, and have a very similar fear! Mine is a great colour match though as I bought it in person (from an indoor market stall!)

I have worn it in front of family and at work and no one has ever commented if that helps.

thickthighs73 · 26/01/2022 19:29

Can you dye your hair or the hair piece to try and match it?

DaisyMum40 · 26/01/2022 19:33

To be honest, I wouldn't worry about it not being an exact colour match, loads of people have different colours through different lengths of their hair like balayage and ombré. So if they put their hair up then it would still look different from the main root area.

Helpel · 26/01/2022 19:33

I went through a phase of wearing one of these quite a bit and loved it. Found a good colour match too. The problem in the end was if you wear it say more than 3 or 4 times to the same place (work for me!) it becomes obvious it's fake as the bits of hair and the way it curls are always exactly the same! So yeah i I reckon for one off nights out or special occasions I think they're fab if you can get a good colour match, not so much for regular wear (of the same piece)

Cocolapew · 26/01/2022 19:35

I'm in going grey FB groups and see a lot of people using a grey or silver one to help with their transition. I think they look good.

HedyPrism · 26/01/2022 19:46

I use one and no one ever guesses it is fake.

5128gap · 26/01/2022 20:19

Its really common in my circles. The young women in my office go out to a hair shop at lunch time and come back with all sorts of pieces. They change up their look every few days. If you want to be discrete though I would suggest buying a really high quality piece, and if it's real hair you could get your hairdresser to colour match it for you.

Fairylightsongs · 26/01/2022 20:42

I’d go for real hair op, synthetic does tend to have a kind of synthetic shine, like you see on dolls hair, and I’d get different styles if you want to wear it regularly.

KiteflyingKitty · 26/01/2022 21:58

Thanks all.

I’m aware there’s a lot of ethical considerations around the real human hair trade, so if I was going to go real I would need to be 100% happy with where the hair was coming from

That’s quite easy though, right?
AmberLynn1536 · 26/01/2022 23:28

Honestly just embrace it, so many women especially celebs wear extensions, hair pieces hair toppers etc, no one really cares if hair is real or fake, women are lucky on this front no one bats an eye, I sometimes wear clip in hair extensions, I used to have permanent tape extensions but got fed up of them so prefer temporary ones for when the need arises. I would advise human hair though they look far more natural, you can colour, cut, straighten and curl.

Allsorts1 · 26/01/2022 23:32

I think I’d go for human hair (if you can find an ethical source). Have you thought about those clip in strands? Lots of my friends wear them - you can get really cool colour matches.

Cherryblossomtree99 · 26/01/2022 23:34

I wear one. No one has commented on it and even if they did, I don't care. I think I look better with it on than I do without it.

I would also never buy real human hair products. Just because a company says its "sourced ethically" doesn't mean it is.

Classica · 26/01/2022 23:41

I've seen reviews for those Halo hair pieces on youtube. They seem to blend in quite convincingly with people's natural hair. Can't imagine wanting to wear one on a daily basis, but they seem like a good option for special occasions.

thecircusclown · 27/01/2022 09:40

I've been pondering about getting some fake hair bits myself, does anyone have any recommendations?

EishetChayil · 27/01/2022 10:35

It's coming from other women's heads who are so poor they need to sell their hair.

5128gap · 27/01/2022 10:43

Selling your hair is by no means the worst thing women do when they are poor. For some women it grows fast and strong and provides a reasonable means of making extra income without effort.

Hair is also often also sourced from temples where women donate it as sacrifice. The temple then sells the hair to raise money for charitable work.
Any trade that involves hunan beings or their labour in any way is open to exploitation but there's plenty of information to help make ethical choices.

tobee · 27/01/2022 18:36

I've tried cheapo, synthetic "messy" bun from Amazon. It's on a hair elastic band. I liked it but it's quite heavy and slips about/off quite a bit. Any tips for better anchoring?

NoToLandfill · 27/01/2022 21:41

Tobee use old fashioned hair pins in the same colour as your hair- jab a few in, catching a bit of the bun piece and the rest your hair.
