Please talk to me about toner for hair

I am really not sure what it does other than what I have read about purple or blue shampoo for taking brassiness out.

I am letting my grey grow and have about 4" of grey now but it is light gray in half my fringe and a lot of it is dark gray mixed with dark brown which is my original colour plus a white streak here and there, its very patchy!

The dyed part is a light brown and there is quite a line where the two meet. Is there any sort of toner that would help soften that line. I dont want to start dying again so anything that washes out in a few shampoos would be fine but I find it very confusing so any help would be appreciated.

Is it like a temporary wash in/wash out dye?

You could try Shrine drops in Bronde here

I had a very orange balayage and Wella Color Fresh helped a lot to tone down the raw bleach look: www.wella.com/professional/en-UK/hair-color/color-fresh/color-fresh#/?_k=1ljpuf I'm not sure how it would work on untreated or grey hair but might be worth a try.

@steelrose Shrine srops sound interesting, do you know if they cover dyed and undyed hair?

@crispinglovershighkick I have tried the wella one and it does help but does not touch the dyed part of my hair.

Are both of these considered toners then?

My natural colour is dark brown and quite ashy. I wanted colour to match my natural to hide the grey and some light ash brown highlights put through to break it up a bit. What I got was yellow blonde highlights and a chestnut permanent colour and very damaged hair

I've only used the shrine drops once and they've covered/blurred most of the chestnut and yellow. I was wary about putting conditioner on my roots so I can't say at this stage if it covers the grey or not.

I don't know if they are a toner or not, I think of them as a wash out colour.

Fair point, probably not considered toner, more of a coloured conditioner or rinse. Toner afaik is a chemical process to deposit colour, you mix it with a developer etc.
