What is on your shopping list this year?

I'm doing a whole low buy, 'mindful' shopping / buying with 'intention', (buzzwords abound), thing this year.

I'm making a list of things I'm 'allowed' to buy (and why can't I stop putting things in inverted 'commas'???)

Sort of inspired by the now famous MN S&B thread about achieving elegance, I'm investing in classics I may never have to get rid of ever.

Anyway, my winter list is:

Extremely comfy knee boots which don't have too clunky a sole. I need flexibility or my feet get sore. I don't know what colour, as I don't suit black, but I wear a lot of blue and grey, so don't think brown goes with my clothes

Knit dresses / thick cotton dresses for winter

A cardi / coatigan type thing

Big, soft, cosy scarf

I won't necessarily buy all of these this year, but they're on my list for future

I've made a wishlist of items I would consider long term investments, and I am unsure if I would be able to buy any of them this year, it does depend on alot of things but I am keeping a list of items I like in the hopes I can buy a few.

There are four coats I am tempted by, all trench coats but ranging from £849-£995 I would only really justify one if I was lucky.

Two trilby hats, one belt, one pair of leather gloves. And a jumper.

I also have a jewellery wishlist as I want to stack my earrings, but investing in those is going to be price heavy, lower range probably aroun £200-£300 but I really like the Maria Tash ones which would be significantly more.

I need a cross body bag too, I'm still on the hunt for a good designer one that catches my eye.

I also want to invest in pieces for longterm. Eg the knee boots I'm looking at are more expensive than I would usually buy

I don't need my stuff to be designer, but I'm thinking more like good quality riding type boots from a proper country or saddlery company (Dubarry maybe or Ariat)

On my wish list I have:

New sets of really nice, grown up lounge wear (enabling me to throw away all the mismatched pj bottoms and dh's old fleeces)

New night wear - sophisticated, not sexy but grown up. I want pjs and nightshirts and a gorgeous dressing gown. The kind of look you see women wearing in films. I never look like that! But I'd like to try I think

A gorgeous casual wardrobe for weekends / working from home. I have loads of very lovely work and going out clothes but not so good on the casual but put together stuff for a weekend coffee etc. I made a start on this last year and bought a good few things from Sezane but then I gained some weight and none of them fitted me quite right. I'm losing the weight again now so will be able to assess what I like and don't like from what I have and start building from there

New trainers. I tend to wear New Balance and have worn through my last pair so am on the hunt for new ones right now

A gorgeous leather bag for weekend wear, cross body. Haven't seen anything I like and am willing to pay up the £500

Jewellery - I would like a new gold necklace and I am hankering after an eternity ring (expensive!)

I have a Polene numero un Nano in blush and I adore it.

On my wish list is one in a darker colour Smile the quality is outstanding for the price and it goes crossbody.

I'm retiring this year and have decided to save for a very upmarket new wardrobe. I want a cropped jumper, very patterned ( like a Valentino one) to wear over a tight black T shirt and jeans. Second on the list, a denim dress, relaxed fit, maybe some embroidery. Third, some Penelope Chilvers boots, the ones I want are tasselled ankle boots and never get reduced, so £329. Some new Le Chameu wellies and sheepskin lined Birkies will complete the first draft of the list. As I'm not in need of any new clothes at the moment and have some very nice stuff to sell off I'm rather looking forward to these indulgences.

lindyloo57 · 25/01/2022 16:44

I just brought in john lewis sale, a man's cashmere hoodie half price, I will now though out my old h&m acrylic ones which ball up after two or three wears.

I'm not on a buying restriction but my buzzwords for this year are "less but better" so similarly I'm aiming for fewer items but better quality too.

I'm also thinking some really nice knee high boots, spending a lot more and actually looking after them!!

At the moment I'm trying to decide if I can justify some of the fairfax and favour Regina tall boots. I really really like them in suede but whether those will last well enough is a big question!

I've seen them on navy blue suede too which might work with your wardrobe.

I'm also planning in investing in an expensive leather jacket but I have a history of buying them and then falling out of love with them!

Those are gorgeous dramaz. I understand your suede dilemma. I think I'd destroy suede boots. I'm outside a lot, so think I really need something waterproof, incredibly comfortable, durable but also really beautiful. Is that too much to ask Grin?!

Well that is definitely the sensible decision! Whether I make a sensible choice too remains to be seen! I do love the riding/ country style boots too, the Dubarrys look amazing on some people.
SarahJessicaParker3 · 25/01/2022 20:40

They really are lovely though. Sensible be damned. Unless you need them for outdoors, get the beautiful boots and frolic about in them indoors and on dry days!

I do like Dubarrys and I've heard that Ariat are similar quality but cheaper. Not heard good things about Dublin tbh. I did buy some of their River boots online and they ended up going back as they were too small, but since then, I've heard their quality has gone downhill a bit.

The trouble is I want boots that look beautiful, but perform like wellies in water and are also supportive, comfortable, good for my feet. Maybe that isn't really possible.

SJP3 - I think you need a really good pair of posh wellies AND some lovely ordinary boots. The problem with Ariat, Dubarry etc. is that they are made for a purpose - rough country life - and are a bit too chunky and big in appearance to be truly multipurpose. I'd agree with your comments on Dublin, I had some of their riding boots for actual riding and they didn't last for 5 minutes.

SarahJessicaParker3 · 26/01/2022 14:28

Thanks constance. I think you're right there.

I probably need some good, leather knee boots which I can wear walking on pavements etc and then some wellies or walking boots for muddy walks. And the walking boots can be bumped way down the list in priority as I already have some hiking boots which do the job

I am eyeing this up ATM

www.celticandco.com/womens/clothing/dresses/slouchy-fine-knit-roll-neck-dress?colourid=59&glCountry=GB&gclid=Cj0KCQiA_8OPBhDtARIsAKQu0gY_b8NCrQ0C7PD5erjtYx-qwmUPUtcN1Cw5jInrGH1etkttqCLZ7IEaAs-IEALw_wcB

Not sure about the hand wash only thing...only thing putting me off! Also not sure if the rolls neck will cut my neck in half and make me look as if I have no neck and 25 chins...
