Reverse washing?

I might be a bit late to this but I've just heard about reverse hair washing when you condition your first then shampoo.
Has anyone tried it? What difference does it make to your hair?
I have very curly/frizzy hair which is damaged from bleaching. Does conditioning first help protect your hair from further damage?
Really interested to hear people's experiences!

I did this long ago, it's okay but I always felt I lacked a bit of something conditioning in the end. You could use a leave in but tbh preshampooing is probably easier and a variation on the same theme, you simply apply an oil from the middle of your hair to ends (I like babassu oil but coconut oil is a popular one) before washing, you can do it the night before or right before you shower. It's the same principle whereby the ends of your hair have an added layer of protection when you shampoo it making it less likely to frizz as it remains conditioned.

I would try using less shampoo and really focus on only applying to your roots before rinsing out; and then conditioning without getting any on the roots. This made a difference to my hair as the shampoo was not stripping as much from the ends of my hair, and the conditioner was not making my roots greasy so I could go longer between washes.

As you have curly hair you may want to look into the curly girl method. I do a modified version as I find some of the rules too strict and it can be a long process.

Have a look at these to get started. I warn you it can be like falling down a rabbit hole!

I've done it. It wasn't great.

I've had better results from putting oil - castor oil or coconut on my hair as a mask before washing.

I'm not convinced that conditioner does much other than make my hair easier to comb after washing

I do as I use Philip Kingsley Elasticiser, designed to go on first and shapoo out. My hair is fine so this works best for me, my hair is left light, bouncy and not weighed down at all.

Thanks everyone.
My hair is very thick and coarse. Last year, due to lock downs , I spent a lot of time playing with the colour of my hair and its now paying the price!!!
I tried the Curly Girl method about 10 years ago but didn't get any results 😕 Everyone kept saying about trial and error and recommending expensive products which I just couldn't afford and was fed up waiting for this miraculous change that was going to happen to my curls - I'd been using the Curly Girl method for a year.
I know I'd still have to condition at the end with reverse washing as there's no way I'd get a comb through otherwise.
I'm just looking for a method/product that will protect my hair and define my curls without paying £20+ for a bottle of conditioner!

Conditioning first won't work if you have knotty hair. There is a reason conditioner is applied after shampoo!

What I would suggest is looking into a deep conditioner that you would do once a week, for your hair type.

I personally wash with just shampoo every 3 days ish, then do a big deep condition once every 3 washes, where I leave it on for A LONG TIME.

ElleGettingBetter · 24/01/2022 12:36

I do this and my hair feels much better for it.

Conditioner always made my hair limp, even when applied to the ends.

I use a detangling spray and wide comb afterwards.

Westerman · 24/01/2022 12:58

My hair is very dense and coarse. It's very prone to knotting when it gets a bit longer, too, which is awful. Every few washes I use Philip Kingsley's Elasticiser and it really does make a difference.
In between times, I use Elvive oil in milk leave-in conditioner on the ends of my hair.

IME curly girl focuses too much on products rather than styling. I can get lovely defined curls whatever products I use as long as I style it in a particular way. Which is slather a load of gel/curl cream on it when it's wet. Scrunch it up. Defuse it to the point of ringlets. Slap some more gel/curl cream on bits that are a bit frizzy and then leave it to set for about an hour.

If I follow the girl girl advice for washing my hair looks limp and greasy and never feels clean.

@Amithatbad1, get a bottle of castor oil or a tub of coconut oil from £1 shop. It is sticky and gloopy and you don't need much so lasts ages

Use a nice conditioner after the shampoo if you need it. I like the Avalon Organics conditioner link

You don't have to follow curly girl to the letter but I think your hair would benefit from not using shampoo. I use as I am cowash with a silicone brush to scrub my scalp. Conditioner afterwards
If I use shampoo my hair is much more frizzy with curls not defined
