DIY wedding makeup

I'm having a small and very simple wedding in the Spring, and have (possibly foolishly) decided to do my own makeup. Anyone got any tips on what makeup to buy for it? In particular, concealer and foundation (desperate need to hide bags from life with a toddler and newborn!) At the moment I use highstreet type makeup (Rimmel etc) but I want to treat myself to a few nice bits. Main issue I have is I live nowhere near a department store / big Boots etc so won't be able to go and visit to get colour matched etc! Any suggestions would be appreciated!

My mil had her make up done for free on the Estée Lauder counter in boots for my wedding. She bought a lipstick.

Sorry that’s useless, avoid anything with spf in or you’ll get flashback in your photos.

I just had a spray tan and eyelash extensions with some pink lipstick.

Have you tried the findation website? You enter your current foundation shade and it suggests which colour you would need in other brands. Also Hannah Martin on youtube does make up tutorials, def worth a look.

If there is any way you can get into a town to try before your wedding I would really recommend. You ideally need to be colour matched you don't want too dark foundation on your wedding day or even too light.

Also that way you can pick up some samples and use one of them rather than buy if you'd prefer. I'd look for something light but buildable, Chanel used to do a really nice light one or Charlotte tilbury do some also. Heard good things about touché eclat concealer though never tried.

Thanks everyone Smile I'll have a look at those online tutorials. I can get to a larger Boots but doesn't have any 'fancy' makeup counters! The others are in cities hours away. I have been told that Charlotte Tilbury makeup is good - has anyone tried their foundation match virtual consultations?

I know a lot of makeup artists favour Armani Luminous Silk or Nars Sheer Glow foundations for wedding day.

Concur with PP to avoid SPF.

Charlotte Tilbury gets a very cool reception on MN. I like some of her stuff, and other items not so much, I gave a breakdown on a previous thread. No experience with her concealers. I did try her Lightwonder foundation and I think it was a good product, but not good for me as it really didn't suit my oily skin. I would strongly recommend you avoid her mascaras, they are a nightmare for flaking and transferring generally, never mind on a day you might be welling up...

I did my own for our wedding as we were getting married away from home and I couldn’t have any appointments in advance.

I used
benefit primer and benefit boing concealer
Mac Pro long wear foundation
A bourjois blusher
Urban decay all nighters setting spray
Some cheap false lashes with no 7 mascara

And watched lots of YouTube wedding make up videos (I was forever trying on a Sunday before bed then washing it all off 😂🤦🏽‍♀️)

Don't do anything you are not comfortable or familiar with.

Test it, take photos so you see how it works.

Don't try any new skin care in the run up to it. You must try the foundation.

Research in advance, watch tutorials, don't let yourself be pressured into buying more the you need. It all adds up very quickly on the counter and you'll end up with bit you'll never use.

Touche Eclat is a highlighter, it will only make your bags worse in the photos.

Also, don't forget to have fun with your makeup! Grin

You can often find samples of Charlotte tilbury on ebay

Avoid Estée Lauder's double wear. I wore it to another person's wedding once and had dreadful flashback in the professional photos. I'm pale anyway but it looked like I was wearing patchy white mime makeup Blush

Another recommendation for Hannah Martin on YouTube and Instagram. She has some great suggestions and IMO does a really classic wedding look. She has an absolutely encyclopaedic knowledge of products so her recommendations are always rock solid

I just used the makeup I already had for my wedding day - just was more considered in priming/powdering etc compared to everyday work, and took my time on my eyes. I bought waterproof mascara just in case. And a different shade of lipstick (but same brand I was already using - I think it was Rimmel).

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 23/01/2022 17:52

One more thing, look into liquid powder lipstick. Many brands do them and they are generally very comfortable to wear and don't budge.

Fispi · 23/01/2022 21:02

I did my own wedding make up and I still like the look despite having more skill with it now. It was simple and very me.

I like bobbi brown corrector with collection concealer over the top for dark under eye circles. BB tutorials on YouTube are handy for technique. Wayne Goss does brilliant quick make up tutorials for concealer etc.

I used no7 eyeshadow, Benefit high beam, no7 lipstick, and can't remember what else. I played around before hand but it was very low key. Have fun!

Thanks everyone! Some really useful tips. Luckily I've got time to do some proper research to find the right products. I actually had a makeup trial a few years ago (this is a rebooked Covid-cancelled wedding!) so I'll see if I've got any info on what she was planning on using.
