I'm just about to buy some salt and pepper pots from Germany (my Dsil wants them for her birthday) they cost £75 ish - I'm so confused it I have to pay extra charges on top of that?
Screenshot of the S&P pots and the shipping page - apologies this isn't strictly a S&B post - but I thought if anyone would know it would be you guys!

It’s all on their FAQ page under “Customs and Import Fees” www.connox.co.uk/help/delivery.html

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 21/01/2022 22:13

Could you order them seperately as 2 parcels worth less than £134, since this is the trigger for import tax?

botemp · 21/01/2022 22:36

I'm in the EU so opposite situation up to €150 (roughly the £134) you pay vat and admin fees. Over that amount you pay vat, import duties and admin fees.

This shop will deliver the same items delivered duties paid (DDP) which takes the headache out of it:

royaldesign.co.uk/brands/kahler

Nordic nest might also have them, fairly confident they ship DDP too.

I know!
But I don't understand, that's why I've asked...I still don't understand!

They are £75 ish total - so that is under the £134 threshold? So does that mean I have to pay extra on top of that or am I ok because it's less than £134?

Thanks...they are out of stock of the 'salt' ones unfortunately

I guess the EU is the same as the US. You're now charged vat when you buy and it's the company's responsibility to pay the vat on to UK officials. (I don't how that works!) You just pay postage. If the cost of the goods plus postage take you over the threshold you then get charged with import duty and probably a handling charge from your delivery company.
It actually seems much simpler than it was before Brexit.

AllLopsided · 21/01/2022 23:48

@madisonbridges how can it possibly be simpler than pre-Brexit when there were no customs fees or duty at all within the EU? Many shops have stopped shipping to customers in the EU from the U.K., and vice versa, because they don't want to deal with the paperwork. So now we all have higher prices and less choice (and most Brits living in the EU didn't vote for this, or indeed even get an opportunity to).

@RoseSays I'd advise trying to find somewhere that ships them duty paid if possible. The problem is, if your parcel is checked by customs/is over whatever the U.K. limit is for import duties, you will end up paying the customs charge as well as the VAT which is enough to notice (£20?). I think the gift limit for the U.K. is £39 per person so your items would attract duty if sent as a gift. I don't know the rate for personal imports. I'm in the EU so have the 'opposite' problem - and we have no 'gift allowance' here, duty is payable on everything! I only order from companies that deliver duty paid - there are more of them now but early in 2021 there were almost none. Many of my favourite shops have simply stopped delivering here because they don't want to deal with the paperwork.

madisonbridges · 21/01/2022 23:51

@AllLopsided
I was talking about buying from the US. Much simpler. I never see anything I want to buy from the EU.

botemp · 22/01/2022 07:31

These two sites have several in stock in salt and pepper and sizes. Finnish Design shop delivers duties paid, the shops selling through Trouva are UK based or delivered duties paid:

www.finnishdesignshop.com/Kahler-m-127.html

www.trouva.com/brands/kahler

missmoon · 22/01/2022 08:51

It should be fine if the total is below £135 including shipping, as long as the ship do the paperwork correctly. It might be worth e-mailing them to ask.

I only buy from shops that sell DPP (duties paid), just in case, as they know how to deal with customs. I find that larger department stores in EU countries often do this, and stick the smaller brands.

I haven’t had a problem yet. Hope it works out OP, this customs thing is a real pain.

missmoon · 22/01/2022 08:53

Sorry, full of typos. I meant as long as the shop do the paperwork properly, and DDP (not DPP)!

BakeOffRewatch · 22/01/2022 15:22

Ah sorry OP. You should be ok, but I’ve heard of customs believing the value to be more and then holding the package so I personally wouldn’t risk it.
