Evening

My husband treated me to some Only Curls stuff for Christmas. It's nice but it's expensive, I reckon it will be about a tenner a week.

Any other recommendations? I can afford it but not sure if there's something amazing out there...

For the curly girl method? If you have thick hair then Cantu and Shea moisture (a couple of those are suitable for finer hair too) are often on offer in boots or superdrug. I really like the garnier ultimate blends and hair food ranges too. Very affordable.

Sexnotgender · 20/01/2022 21:45

What type of hair do you have? I’m currently loving Innersense products.

EcoCustard · 20/01/2022 21:51

I like noughty wave products, faith in nature and some ultimate blends.

DueyCheatemAndHow · 20/01/2022 21:59

Thanks - interesting that everyone is coming back with cheaper products

Sainsburys apple conditioner is a great co-wash and umberto giananni curly products are good. Not sure if they are 100% CGM approved but pretty sure no sulphates or silicones

wonderspread · 20/01/2022 22:25

Really does depend on what your hair is like but I also second Cantu and Shea Moisture, especially for styling. I like Cantu curl activator as my leave in and their moisture retention hair gel. Shea Moisture miracle styler is also great.

I don’t get on with Cantu shampoo or conditioner, found it too heavy. Shea Moisture is good, although the pumps are useless.

I use Charles Worthington everyday gentle as my first shampoo, then As I Am co wash for my second cleanse. Currently trying As I Am hydration elation for conditioner but seems like any other conditioner to me!

Shea Moisture manuka honey masque is great for deep conditions.

I buy all of these on offers, 3 for 2s etc, never pay full price as there’s always something on with these brands.

Boots curl creme is not strictly CG friendly but was a game changer for me. For 2quid a tub it's worth a go. I like to rub a tiny amount in my hands and then glaze over my hair when soaking wet and before gel or other styling products. I also love the UG Curl Jelly. I have thick, coarse hair and it's the only thing that gives me good hold and a decent cast

Treluxe serum and gel - they provide great definition and hold.

Check out Curl Maven on Instagram. I've learned a lot from her and she has handy guides about different curl types/patterns/porosity etc.

Curl Maven is awesome!!

Treluxe is the next brand I want to try. Currently in love with Innersense and have loads of product to get through.

Thesheerrelief · 21/01/2022 15:33

@Sexnotgender I'm just starting to try Innersense!

I LOVE I create volume. Literally the best product I’ve used. I’ve been following curly girl for over 5 years now.

Didn’t get on with the leave in or foaming mousse stuff.

Love the conditioners.

slalomsuki · 21/01/2022 15:40

Cantu curl cream for me also as it makes lovely curls.

I too can't get on with their shampoo and conditioner as it's too heavy and makes my fine hair feel greasy within a couple of days. I tend to now use a cheaper shampoo and use an Aveena light conditioner for fine hair as it doesn't weigh the curls down. Very occasionally I use John Freida shampoo and conditioner but it's not a regular purchase

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 21/01/2022 15:42

My hair likes expensive products Angry
Best results I get are with

Bounce curl shampoo
Innersense colour radiance conditioner
Innersense I create volume and lift
Treluxe gel

PaleGreenGhost · 21/01/2022 16:22

Does anyone have any recommendations for thick, course hair other than cantu? I get great initial results with cantu curl activator, foam and custard but I think over time my hair disagrees with the coconut and gets even dryer.

Innersense.

Look up curl maven, her blog gives good recommendations.

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 21/01/2022 16:39

@Sexnotgender I love orange marmalade too! My hair is v fine, tangles easily and the curls drop quickly despite being naturally curly. It has a default setting of "fluff"

Pixie537 · 21/01/2022 16:47

I have 3B/C hair, low porosity, I do a mixture of Curly girl products and non curly girl.

Curly girl:

AsIam dry & itchy shampoo £12
AsIAm Jamaican castor oil conditioner £12
AsIam castor oil hair mask (once a week) £8?
Cantu twist and lock gel £7

Then once a week I use head and shoulders no silicone anti dandruff shampoo to deep clean hair and scalp.

I also use a denman brush to shape my curls and sleep on a satin pillowcase to reduce frizz.

Orange marmalade is amazing. I often mix it with the ecoslay Jell-O shot too.

My hair is super thick, type 3B/C. Coarse and thirsty. When it behaves it looks amazing.

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 21/01/2022 19:31

@Sexnotgender weirdly the Jell-O shot does nothing for me, literally nothing. No hold, it's like putting thick nothing in my hair Grin

That’s very odd! I only mix it with the orange marmalade or it’s a bit too thick for my hair. Together they work really well for me.
