Supplements for hair growth

My hair is very fine and brittle, and gets to a certain length and then breaks off. I let it dry naturally, don't use hair straighteners and put deep conditioning treatments on regularly. Are there any supplements that actually work? Thanks in advance

Have you considered a trichologist appointment? Anything hair growth orientated tends to be terribly expensive.

A trichologist could save you a lot of trouble.

Thank you, I hadn't considered that option. Off to Google now🙄

I went through a period of trauma. I was losing a lot of hair. I was also barely eating. I assumed the hair loss would be permanent. Then I found out about telogen effluvium. This is where the shedding of hair ramps up, but the follicles aren't damaged. I started using 'BetterYou' B12 oral spray from Holland and Barrett. The advantage for me was that I didn't need to eat to use it. May be pure coincidence, but I quickly noticed a difference. I also didn't (and don't) use straightners, etc. I leave my hair to dry naturally.

Apparently B12 is good for skin, nail, hair, etc. It worked for me, but may be different for you, OP, as my hair was coming out from the roots, and you say yours is breaking off at the ends.

Thank you for your response. I'm prepared to try anything, so I'll give this a go.

My hair was getting thin so I changed my diet and it’s really helped. I wasn’t eating enough protein so I eat more now, especially eggs (biotin in them good for hair). I take a multi vitamin, B complex vitamin & iron.

psuedocream3 · 21/01/2022 09:21

I use Viviscal for mine for similar reasons, and that it would grow so slow. It has zinc, iron, biotin and protein in which are all essential for good hair growth. My hair grew really fast when I used it last. I'm on them again, but only two weeks in so not much to report as yet

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/01/2022 09:27

Mine always falls out with trauma too, they say it takes three months to fall out from the start of the trauma but thats not what my kitchen floor says in the days after a bad time.

The ordinary have started doing a hair serum. It has good reviews on ASOS. I've ordered it Smile

Watermans hair growth shampoo and conditioner worked amazingly for me.

Have you spoken to your GP recently? My hair got very thin and dry over a number of years, I assumed I was peri menopausal but eventually I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid. The medication helped with my energy levels pretty much immediately, and helped my hair a lot too, but this took a bit longer, about 3-4 months. I also found adding a spoonful of collagen powder to my morning coffee and a taking a good quality Omega supplement helped too- I really like the Udo's Choice one. It took a few months, but it definitely made a difference.

To add to advice given so far, and what you're currently doing, I'd use a good hair oil (daily) on the ends of your hair. Also supplements like biotin.

PersonCareHotline · 21/01/2022 23:10

I take B12 for another reason, but have noticed my hair growing quicker as a very welcome side effect.

I get a liquid one and just put a drop in a glass of water .

disneylover367 · 21/01/2022 23:34

@Missatkins Possible low Iron? Is it definitely breakage or hair shedding? If your hair has always been like this I would say it probably is genetic and not much you can do, but if not worth trying a multi vit. And mineral supplement with biotin.

A dermatologist is actually better to see then a trichologist as they can perform more tests.

I think working out why its breaking, either too dry or the growing phase of the hair is too short could help. I know with my hair I have a short growing cycle and peri menopause caused hair shedding. So basically that adds up to me having rubbish hair!
