I'm pregnant - Please help me find a coat that won't make me look like a big fat minger..............................

As the title says really.......

I'm looking for something smartish but warm - why oh why do stores think that pregnant women don't actually want to be warm - even in the height of winter?

My mum bought me one from Wallis for Xmas which is knee length, grey and kind of bobbly looking (very warm) and it will undoubtedly cover my bump but I tried it on yesterday and nearly cried. I just looked like a fat minger in it and at 23 weeks I still have a bit of growing to do!!!

Please help me! I feel I really need to try a jacket on before I buy it but can't face trawling the sales with a toddler. At least if I knew where to look that would be a start.

Ta

There are a couple here but they don't look very warm

Would suggest a swing coat, which you pick up anywhere, perhaps in larger size than usual.
Worth looking on ebay too?

TicTacsMum · 27/12/2007 20:56

No Topshop with maternity section to try nearby I'm afraid and I really need something warmer as I live in the North of Scotland but thanks anyway.

I've had a wee look for swing coats but the only ones I've seen have daft flouncy sleeves.

Jojo has a sale on now - they have a long fleece coat on sale and also a lot of jerseys. The long fleece might have a similar fit to your Wallis coat though. I've just bought a long wrap cardigan that looks great from the front but adds a lot of weight to my arse.

But in a few weeks you probably will be a fat minger so it won't matter.

TicTacsMum · 27/12/2007 20:57

Norks - probably right

It's the 20-week stage that's minging Tic because you don't look properly pregnant, I just look like I've indulged over Christmas, a few more weeks and it'll be a proper bump shape which means my legs & arms will look thin again.

Links to stuff...

Forget coats, get a couple of nice plain coloured ponchos, I'm wearing one as i type and it is super cosy. If you don't do ponchos get some big wrappy throw things and just wear a thick jumper underneath.

Pannacotta · 27/12/2007 21:06

sorry will try that again

You know, I don't remember feeling that minging last time and it was only 2 and a half years ago but I don't suppose I went through a cold winter with that pregnancy.

The Laura Ashley one looks a bit like the one I have from Wallis. Might go in for a look to see if it is any more flattering!

Quite like the long fleece coat from jojo but the model doesn't even look pregnant so not sure how it would look on me.

Not sure how I would battle with a big wrappy throw thing and a toddler that always wants carried. And that's another shite thing about being pregnant Shitemum - why do manufacturers of maternity clothes only make things with massive scoop necks? Do they think we all sweat like pigs?

I did see a lovely warm cowl neck jumper from Isabella Oliver but it was about £150!!!

Shitemum · 27/12/2007 21:17

ah, you have a todder..you're right, wrap not so easy then...
couldnt you wear scoopnecked things over an extra-big polo neck?

Pannacotta · 27/12/2007 21:21

When I was pregnant last winter (also had an un-easy going toddler) I wore a swing coat which I had from a while back. I had it altered a bit and it fitted well right until I gave birth. It looked a bit like the Kew one and I wore a big pashimina type scark knotted at the neck to keep me warm.

TicTacsMum · 27/12/2007 21:22

Have tried the scoopnecked things over other tops but they look odd unless it's just a vest thing i'm wearing which doesn't help with keeping the neck warm. I've been wearing a couple of bodywarmers (not at the same time!) and a scarf over my tops for the past few weeks but I am already sick of them!!

Will persevere with the Kew website - it is so slow!!!

Hmmm nice swing coat in Topshop (not maternity) but out of stock .

Just wanted to say I was in Kew today and while I normally dont like Kew (bad staff, awful service) I saw the swing coat and its lovely, really soft and looks good quality.

TicTacsMum · 29/12/2007 19:40

Thanks, Pannacotta. I bought the Laura Ashley one today but I'm not sure about it so I think it'll go back too! I'm feeling quite hormonal today though so that doesn't help....

I did get a grey knee length cardi from Laura Ashley and that will help a bit till I get a coat sorted.
