Girls Formal Wear

DD(10) is playing in a piano completion ina month or so’s time. She needs to dress fairly smartly. Pictures I’ve seen all show boys in chinos, shirts and ties.

DD will not wear a dress/skirt/culottes, leggings or any trousers she deems “too flappy” or a jumpsuit, pinafore. Or anything too hot, she’s had cords and they were too hot.
She is not allowed to wear shorts, jeans or joggers understandably.

She wears shorts to school year round, and football kit or joggers at home. She has glittery joggers for parties!!

What on earth can she wear???!!!!

She’s tell and thin, and wears age 12 clothes.

I have no idea what to dress her in!
We’ve just browsed Next, M&S, Boden, Sainsbury’s/Tu, George at Asda and no one has any trousers for girls that are not jeans/joggers/

In the past she had refused all-in-one type garments (that particular one is sold out in her size anyway) and she will not wear tights (can’t say I blame her), but I think we’re going to have to work on getting her into a longer legged jumpsuit, it looks like the only option.

Chino type trousers and a sparkly top maybe? Gap can be good for chinos.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 19/01/2022 20:21

Gap! Genius. Hadn’t thought of them.

Chinos abs a sparkly top is fine in principle, it’s just finding girls’s chinos. She might still fit boys.

Might be worth trying eBay for chinos, I had a quick Google and agree there is not much in the shops!

I do sympathise, my DD is now year & & would have had all of these restrictions - she wore shorts throughout primary and is now pretty much the only girl in trousers at secondary.
She was actually elected may queen in y5 which was interesting - we compromised on a spotty short jumpsuit from Boden which she wouldn't normally have worn but I think even my stubborn DD saw the need for compromise ;)

It's s shame gap are out of stock, you could try a slim boys fit or I do recommend looking at second hand gap - I find they last really well.

These with a nice top and shoes? www.newlook.com/uk/girls/clothing/trousers/girls-black-belted-skinny-fit-trousers/p/686295701

Jumpingintomenopause · 19/01/2022 22:38

Perhaps a blouse like this too.

Is it sensory preference, or more of a "that's too girlie" issue?

If Gap is no good, Mango/Uniqlo/Zara might have some suitable trousers and black shirts.

I wish you luck (as I've just had to order some stuff for my sporty "I hate skirts, and please don't ask me to wear a dress" teen).

Zara kids do boys chinos

GinF1zz · 20/01/2022 09:05

Have you looked at monsoon? They had quite a lot of jumpsuits when I last looked.

mrssmiling · 20/01/2022 09:57

H&M have a pretty good range of trousers. Would these be any good?

Not sure if your DD may still be a bit small for women’s sizes, but as soon as we could look at size 6 or 8 the range of clothing choices opened up!

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 20/01/2022 11:50

Slim leg tapered ankle grazer trousers and a suitable top?

Pretty much any dark trousers would be ok, you might even get away with a jogger type style if you looked for something in a slightly dressy fabric and went for a smart top.

She could wear exactly what the boys wear if the issue is not being too feminine. If it is more a sensory thing I would go for stretchy trousers, just not really tight like leggings.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 20/01/2022 12:02

If you could persuade her to wear a dress/skirt/playsuit/culottes but tights are the issue could she wear leggings instead? If she puts matching socks underneath it might not be too obvious or she could make it part of the look, so colour co-ordinated leggings ankle gap and shoes.

Alternatively at 10 she is not really too old to wear bare legs and socks if you went for a suitable dress or skirt.

[[So, we’ve spent a long time browsing abs have ordered this outfit from f&f via Next. She’s not blown away by the pink top, but it only comes as a set, and she’s rather taken with the culottes. We can always get a different top. School socks and shoes will have to do, unless I can find something reasonable priced and lace up and not-trainers.

DD’s clothing constraints are a bit sensory and a bit “too girly”. She hates anything rubbing on her legs. She, like me, has a very long body for her height, and jumpsuits/play suits are never quite long enough, and she doesn’t tolerate big collars/frills etc. Or floral/butterfly/unicorn type patterns.

Back up is black school trousers and a white shirt (old ones of DS’s), but we’re both hoping for something slightly jollier.

That's nice, the cullottes look a great compromise. You could always go for a different top if she doesn't like the pink one and give away or sell the pink one as brand new and unworn. She could wear any colour with those cullottes.

Madcats · 21/01/2022 18:06

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads Startrite emailed today to say that their sale finishes at the end of the month.

There might be some suitable shoes on there. Sometimes parents put unworn kids shoes on EBay too if you are confident about the size.

We have a parcel from John Lewis arriving tomorrow; DD knows she'll either have to like it or face a mad dash around the shops tomorrow!

hugoagogo · 21/01/2022 18:16

Kids are annoying aren't they? First of all she says no cullottes or flappy trousers then chooses those long cullottes, which seriously couldn't be more flappy.GrinGrin

Yep, we talked about that. It’s stuff flapping round her ankles she doesn’t like. She does have a few pairs of long shorts, so we’ll see how we go. They havn’t arrived yet!

That's a nice outfit! You might try Ralph Lauren girls in future, as they go up to age 14 and are relatively slim cut.

Herecomesthesun70 · 21/01/2022 19:13

River island will be worth a look

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 22/01/2022 14:03

The culottes outfit gets a big 👍, and we found some unused black patent loafers in her size in a local charity shop. Much as I thank @Madcats for the heads up on the StartRite same, £4 for a pair of shoes she’ll wear literally for an hour is even more palatable. There will be another pair of football boots along in a minute.
