Botox appointment tomorrow advice please!

Wavypurple · 16/01/2022 21:51

I have an appointment tomorrow to have Botox in my jaw. Very excited as I grind my teeth so badly I have neck pain/muscle aches/dental issues and all of this will be sorted along with not having to wear a mouth gaurd anymore Grin

However at my consolation the dr said that as I’m paying for the whole syringe she might as well do the rest of my face if I wanted to as I have forehead and eye wrinkles (charming).

I really don’t feel as if I have massively noticeable wrinkles but this has made me really paranoid 😂 I’m very much in the camp of women being sold these things unnecessarily etc etc.

I probably will go for Botox when I’m slightly older but I’m 24.

My question is then really, is ‘preventative’ Botox such a thing? This is what the dr sold it to me as, saying that it’s not just for older (Hmm) ladies and that I should get on top of it now.

Just wondering if anyone has actually had a good preventative Botox experience and seen the pay off as they’ve gotten older or if it’s just a marketing scam to keep me coming back.

Sorry for rambling. I just wanted to not grind my teeth anymore and now I’ve had this on my mind worrying that I look massively older than I do. Not that there is even anything wrong with that at all and we’re privileged to live another day. Internalised misogyny against myself I guess!

I've been getting botox for cosmetic reasons since I was 35. I'm 38 now and have it twice a year in my crow's feet, inbetween brows and a bit in my forehead.
My doctor has commented that my lines have improved and I don't need it any more frequently.

Are you sure that it's 'by the syringe'? I haven't heard of that at my practice. Might they be trying to upsell to you? Check the small print/website. I'm just given what is needed.

By all means have it for your teeth grinding. 24 year olds really don't need it for wrinkles (my opinion). In early 30s maybe reassess? That's when most people start to develop a few fine lines. The best thing you can do for your skin at your age is high uva/uvb suncream applied throughout the year and regular exfoliation.

This is such a sad post OP. It's unacceptable that this doctor has made you feel self conscious about your appearance with a unsolicited opinion. I'm old and have Botox sometimes just for frown lines as don't want to look all grumpy. But I would never have dreamed of starting in my twenties. Some lines etc are a natural part of ageing and the more people who get involved with this sort of intervention, the more others feel they need to when really we all need a much healthier approach to ageing. You really don't want to start down this road. And I bet these so called lines are just folds of skin that allow your face to move!

Botox isnt sold by the syringe. But sometimes it's sold by the vial.
(More commonly in the UK to be sold by 'area')

If there is left over Botox only use it if your winkles bother you. Theres really no need to use it otherwise. Perhaps have a chat with the practitioner and ask her where she would recommend you put it.

P s you will love the Botox for your masseter. Life changing treatment 😀

Jinglebellsoncake · 16/01/2022 22:37

Perhaps try a lip flip! Only a tiny amount of Botox. You likely don't have any wrinkles at 24, so a lip flip would make more sense to try

inmyslippers · 16/01/2022 22:38

I'm sure once they open a vial they can reuse it. Baby Botox prevents wrinkle from weakening the muscles.

However at my consolation the dr said that as I’m paying for the whole syringe she might as well do the rest of my face if I wanted to as I have forehead and eye wrinkles (charming).

Did she now?

I have no idea how Botox is sold but 'paying by the syringe' seems a bit scammy to me. As if she is trying to 'get you in the door' with your 'wrinkles' as well as your physical jaw problems.

stevalnamechanger · 16/01/2022 22:40

Some of the top TMJ surgeons don't recommend Botox for jaw issues but try it see if it works for you

Personally I'd have the Botox on your forehead and eyes .. just a touch .

What experience does this person have ? What training ? How many years exp injecting

Omicrone · 16/01/2022 22:41

Oh, have just seen you are only 24 as well?

No, don't get Botox, you really don't need it. And you will end up thinking you need it forever and parting with thousands of pounds that you didn't need to part with.

Honestly, I think these 'doctors' are so unethical.

inmyslippers · 16/01/2022 22:43

Sorry should have said they can't reuse the vial

GlamGiraffe · 16/01/2022 22:43

I've never heard of botox being sold 'by the syringe'. It sounds very unusual. Its also very idd for a doctor to be promoting facial botox treatment to a patient of 24 who has no concerns about their appearance.
Sime foctors do suggest thatbwith ongoing small foses of botox the muscles can eventually forget how to frown etc so lines wont develop but you have never duscussed thus do it seems very strange.
How have you chosen this doctor? Were they specifically recommended for the specialism or did you choose them at random. So many practitioners (including doctors and dentists) offer botix and filler treatments hut all are definitely not equal. It is incredibly important to choose wisely. Its your face and with botox that can have significant implications. A good practitioner will know their stuff and offer sensible advice and discuss options with you. I'd be concerned about the coversation you've had

Bringonsummer19 · 16/01/2022 22:44

What? I’m really worried that someone has suggested this, it’s normally by area. I would look for a new doctor, you do not need Botox at 24 for cosmetic (even preventative)

GlamGiraffe · 16/01/2022 22:46

Really sorry about my awful typing. Eyesight badly affected today😳

KittytheHare · 16/01/2022 22:50

I'm sure I've read that once a certain size vial is opened it cannot be reused, so must be done in one session. So that is probably why she offered this. I don't think it's particularly dodgy.

BunnyBonking · 16/01/2022 22:56

So it sounds like she'll have a syringe of botox but you only need a bit for the teeth grinding. She's basically saying she might as well use it elsewhere rather than it go to waste.

So she's trying to be nice, but by saying you need it in your forehead or wrinkles, or whatever, is a bit much when you never asked for it and you're 24 and probably don't have a wrinkle in sight.

Whether it is preventative is debatable. At the end of the day, botox is so good that you could screw up your face so much throughout your twenties and thirties that you could still look great with it injected in your face in your forties with no preventative measures. However... One thing it is great for is training your face not to move in certain ways. So if you start early you might not frown as much etc. I don't frown much anymore even when I don't have botox in my face as my face just doesn't like frowning anymore.

I think botox is great. But at 24 you defo won't need it. Don't be scared of it though.

Jinglebellsoncake · 17/01/2022 07:59

The Dr doesn't sound scammy at all 🤯
She like a pp has said above, she is trying to be nice by saying there will be left over Botox and asking the OP if she wants to use it elsewhere, instead of chucking it in the bin...

Gunpowder · 17/01/2022 08:06

OP is 24!

OP you definitely don’t need Botox. Botox makes everyone look 35ish from a distance. Wonderful if you are 40 or 50, not if you are 24.

Honestly when you are 40 you will look back at pictures of the 24 year old you and think you look so young and beautiful. I really wouldn’t start with tweakments now.

Hope the Botox helps with the teeth grinding though. Please will you report back? I hate my mouth guard too.
