I’m 39, & have been using a standard L’Oréal face cream for years but would like to try something a bit more advanced. What do you think is a good and effective anti-ageing face cream?

Staying out of the sun, a good diet, not smoking and lots of water.

Only joking, I'm placemarking because I need one!

I have tried the No.7 range with the serum & cream combined & I must say that was quite good. They do different products for your age range & what you want to achieve but it can be a costly habit to keep up

You need retinol, vitamin c and a good SPF.

Isn’t retinoids better than retinol?
The best one out the two is what you need and a spf.

Actually, I think you are right. Cream can't put right the damage that has already happened.

Have a look on you tube - the Budget Dermatologist. She's American but recommends stuff like Neutrogena, Avene, La Roche Posey, Olay, L'Oreal - none that pricey and those that we cannot normally get on our shelves you can normally get from Amazon.

There is one post where she says exactly what ingredi4ents to look out for (as in vitamin C, Retinol etc etc.

She also recommends some sun protections SPF stuff. Basically it can all be bought on the shelves not prescription.

The only thing proven to work is Vitamin A aka retinoids aka tretinoin, available in the UK via prescription including the disruptive online dermatologists Skin and Me and Dermatica.

Plenty of people will say they’ve just used a basic cream, say Nivea in the blue pot, and look great for age, which I don’t doubt as it’s also a lot to do with genetics.

I’ve tried them all. Every budget and every brand.

Dr Jackson’s 02 night cream is my favourite for forehead, cheeks, nose and chin of a night.

Around my eyes I like Your Good Skin balancing skin concentrate which is an inexpensive one from Boots but whatever eye cream I use I let it sink in and then apply Vaseline under my eye and on my upper eyelid and I have no crepey skin, wrinkles or crows feet around my eyes.

I stopped having Botox around a decade ago and feel the Vaseline is doing a better job.

I think it depends whether you're trying to be preventative or restorative. If preventative then @MrsTerryPratchett is absolutely right. If some damage is done already then you may need to go down the restorative route and then @Wizzbangfizz is on to a thing.

I know she's controversial but I have followed Caroline Hirons' advice and it's been transformative. I've always had good skin (so didn't think I needed to do anything else) but it's SO much better having followed her routine.

I use dermatica. I pay 22 per month for a tube. It does work on faint lines.

Honestly your moisturiser is the least important part.

As others have said retinoids, spf, vit c and good hydration. Second the recommendation to check out Caroline Hirons. She gets loads of criticism for recommending expensive products (which she does) but she knows her stuff and it’s totally possible to follow her routines with high street brands. Her book on skincare is really useful and informative.
