Can you recommend a hair product for DD?

My DD, age 14, is fed up with her hair, which is long and light brown and quite fine. It was curly when she was younger and still has some curl in it, especially if she leaves it to dry naturally, or when the weather's humid. Her issue is that she has shorter hairs on top of her head that are visible when they go curly/frizzy. She also wants her hair to be shiny. It's not especially thick hair. She says, even if she brushes her hair during the day at school, by the time she gets home it looks messy again.

What conditioner or other products do people recommend?

You’ve described my hair exactly. I’ve tried hundreds of products over the years and had a bit of success with Bumble and Bumble Brilliantine, but what has helped the most is a keratin blow dry which has made my hair so shiny and taken all of the frizz out. I appreciate that an expensive salon treatment was probably not what you were thinking of given she’s only 14.

Have a look at the curly girl method. It may well be that her hair is still curly, but just needs some care and careful handling

Thanks. Yeah I probably won't go for the expensive salon treatment, but interesting to note, thank you. She has read about the curly girl method but is put off by the 'faff' involved.

I could look for SLS and silicone free products. But which are good for fine yet frizzy hair?

Anything but the hairbrush! I’d suggest just blowdrying.

DS and I have gone curly girl. It’s not much faff at all, although I think we probably do it the lazy way. We’re both enjoying curls that feel so much better without silicone conditioners.

We use Faith in Nature conditioner for washing / conditioning (occasionally use Herbal Essences sulphate free shampoo) and then Cantu Curl Activator or Umberto Giannini Curl Jelly (a very little goes a long way for both of these). Use a micro fibre towel to absorb moisture after washing, and only dry on low heat with a diffuser. Ideally let hair dry naturally.

Don’t brush / comb when hair is dry.
