Sprinolactone PCOS

Hi
I am wondering if anyone has taken sprinolactone for acne caused by PCOS?

I am 32 and my acne started around age 25 have tried everything apart from roaccutane

Im on the high strength epiduo atm which has cleared most of it but I’m now getting break through acne

I went to a private derm today and I’ve been prescribed 100mg sprinolactone

Just wondering if it worked and what the side effects were? There is mixed reviews online regarding weight gain and weight loss.. I’m already over weight so really don’t want to gain any

It didn't help me I'm afraid op. Only thing that did was roaccutane.

Thatswhatmamasaid · 16/01/2022 07:05

I was offered this many years ago but didn't take it in the end. I'd figured that I would eventually have to come off it at some point, the acne would eventually return and so didn't see the point in taking it. How about seeing an aesthetics doctor instead, some have dermatology backgrounds too. They could offer all sorts of treatments which target acne without you needing to take Spironolactone.

Have you tried Differin cream via GP?
I had tried many things including epiduo and nearly started tablets before finding Differin.
I use the cream with cerave products which has really helped.
I use revolution cream in morning with SPF 30 for oily/normal skin

I took Spiro plus Yasmin when I had to come off Dianette, I don't have PCOS but did have acne. It worked for me, no noticeable side effects.

Rachie20 · 16/01/2022 07:45

DD takes it. After seeing her acne get even worse on roaccutane, spironalactone has given her clear skin. She’s not had any issues with weight gain.

CherryAndAlmond · 16/01/2022 07:48

It was great for me (no pcos but lifelong acne). Skin was much less greasy and no breakouts, hair got thicker. But I got very lumpy uncomfortable breasts and it worried me, so I came off it in the end.

NutellaEllaElla · 16/01/2022 12:08

@CherryAndAlmond did you just have Spiro or was it spiro+ the pill? I don't want to take the pill again but am curious as to whether I could just take Spiro. My skin never relapsed to full acne and I am being vain, I can live with the substantially reduced blemishes but if I'm being a perfectionist...

CherryAndAlmond · 16/01/2022 12:51

It was just Spiro - I was 44 so the combined pill wasn't really an option.

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 16/01/2022 13:13

If you have Facebook, the Verity PCOS group is excellent for discussions on this kind of thing, from women who actually have PCOS and hormonal acne and other symptoms.

I was told by my consultant no spironolactone whilst TTC so that’s something you may need to consider.

Thanks for all replies

I haven’t tried Differin but the ingredient in that is adapalene which is also in epiduo .. also I am not on the normal strength epiduo I am on the high strength one which is prescribed a lot less and mainly
Only be derms . It has helped me but not get 100 percent clear.

I have also tried seeing an aesthetic doctor, I paid about £400 for Obagi products which cleared my skin at first only to return in a few months even whilst still on the system.

I would say I’ve tried it all apart from roccatuane.. I was also told I’m to over weight for dianette.

I think as my acne is hormonal either the pill or Spiro are my best bet.. on day 4 no noticeable side effects so far

I had roaccutane, it was only a 4 month course and gave me 3 years clear skin. I had some minor breakouts so I’ve been referred for another course.

Have they suggested anything for the weight? A major component of pcos is controlling weight. If I gained two stone my periods stop.

Rosey1334p · 19/01/2022 10:16

@Fluffycloudland77 I really want to avoid roaccutane it is a last resort for me. My derm also said that if you have PCOS roaccutane won’t always work for you as it doesn’t address the hormone imbalance but glad it worked for you.

I’m not massively overweight probably could do with losing about two stone i have been slimmer and when I was my skin was even worse. I’ve been told my PCOS is mild.. I still ovulate and have regular periods my cycles are just quite long usually 36-42 days

Got on fine with spiro but it’s a fairly short fix. Check out Dr Sam’s affordable & good as Obagi. I’m now on Marvelon after Dianette, some breakthru bleeding but good skin. Good luck

Fluffycloudland77 · 19/01/2022 10:22

I have PCOS and it worked for 3 years. I’m 44 and your hormone imbalance gets worse with age as your oestrogen declines.

I turned it down at 30 and took it at 41 when I was cystic and now I’ve scarred.

Lose the weight if you can, we’ve already got a higher chance of diabetes than other women. My cycles regular too.

NutellaEllaElla · 19/01/2022 13:45

Why is Spiro a short fix @constantcougher?

Rosey1334p · 19/01/2022 14:04

I think maybe short fix cos you have to come off it when ttc and all acne will come back as the male hormones won’t be blocked anymore ?

But I was under the impression unless you are ttc then you can stay on for years

NutellaEllaElla · 19/01/2022 14:31

Oh right I see, that's why Dianette and other contraceptives aren't a great solution for me either.

Rosey1334p · 19/01/2022 14:33

I have heard though that Spiro has alot less side affects than hormonal contraceptives according to my derm but I haven’t been on it long enough to tell

Not ttc any time soon so I guess for now it is fine for me
