Anyone else going grey in 2022?

Inspired by some amazing pictures of women embracing their grey (e.g. Andie MacDowell, Dawn French) I've decided that I'm going to grow out my natural colour. I think it's mousy brown with 25-50% grey. I've been dyeing my hair for about 20 years and am fed up with it!

Anyone else doing it? Or already grown theirs out?

I’m totally grey post chemo. It goes so well with clothes compared to my previously mousy goldy brown. I don’t know if I dare keep it though. I’m only early 50s.

AuldAlliance · 15/01/2022 16:35

The more women "dare" to keep their hair its natural colour, the less daring will be required to do it
.
No one thinks it ages men, indeed men who dye their hair are often mocked. It's because we don't see many women with grey hair that we think only old women have grey hair and that it's somehow ageing.

I have two colleagues who've gone grey in their forties (well, they went grey long before, but ditched the dye in their forties) and they both look great. Far better than the ones who dye their hair a colour that doesn't match their skin tone any longer or whose roots are visible.

Kind of. I stopped dying about three years ago. I’d gotten highlights for a few years but wanted to go back to dark so got a balayage which ai hated and just box dyed everything dark for about a year until I could get the balayage cut out. As soon as that was done I stopped dying.

To be fair I’m not very grey. I have a faiirly prominent mallen streak in one side and a further smattering of greys round the front. The greys are actually white rather than grey.

When I was first growing it out, I got a bit uncomfortable with the line between greys and dark dye after about three months. So I got some semi permanent hot pink dye. It turned the white hairs a pale rose colour and gave the dark hair a bit of a pink sheen. It kind of blurred the step a bit.

It’s pretty much all grown out now. I think ish it would just hurry up and get more white now so I could play with bright and Patel colours more. Still, ai look a bit Lily Munster now and she was my idol as a kid. Might try turning the Mallen streak lilac now you mention it.

@PuppyMonkey you are rocking that grey. Looks really good.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/01/2022 18:02

I haven't used any dye since late 2018 . Grown it longer ( shoulder length ) from a Pixie ,it's been a long slog .
I have long natural streaks of grey through mid brown but it's now increasing it's %

I know its not a popular phrase but I think my hair looks a bit "Witchy" loose , its a bit wavy and of course the grey is coarser .
I don;t want to dye it and I don't want to use heat treatments ( blow dry , straighteners )

Needs some length off I reckon.

Cocolapew · 15/01/2022 18:27

I have the opposite problem to coarse grey hair, mines too soft and flops about annoying me.

Hopeislost · 15/01/2022 19:05

Beautiful hair @raffle and @PuppyMonkey !

I'm doing it
🤭 I've been bleached and toned platinum silver for the last 3 years
Now I am highlighting it with 2 grey tones
So to avoid seeing my grey hair .. I'm dyeing it grey 🤣
Loving it actually , condition feels better already

stepfordwifey · 15/01/2022 22:09

I've just used my last colour. Now I'm in my sixties I also think my mid brown is beginning to look a bit harsh against my skin tone and I have that awful grey track in my parting after just 2 weeks. I've seen so many glamorous photos of women my age embracing the grey, so I'm going for it. Going to have a short cut for a while.
Both daughters said not, to but I'm just tired of it after 26 years!

Faevern · 16/01/2022 08:17

@Sort0f I started with a mallen streak, it took a while for the rest to turn grey. They are quite fashionable now, colouring it sounds such a good idea.

I never home dye so during March lockdown I got to try the grey as I went 6 months without a hair appointment. My grey hair was soft but also quite flat, the photos above have natural tones. I’ve gone lighter over the years because the roots are far less visible.

Oblomov22 · 08/03/2022 10:47

watching. for grey tips.

MapleMay11 · 08/03/2022 11:57

Another one here who will not be embracing grey hair. Mine is light blonde anyway so I don't really have to worry about grey roots showing but I do have highlights along my part.

SmallestInTheClass · 08/03/2022 12:09

Grew mine out just before lockdown. I'm much happier with it, was hoping for a nice grey but it's very much still brown with salt and pepper of grey/white. I haven't gone back to the dye. I think some people look much better with dyed hair, but for me I wanted to avoid the dark hair and ageing skin look or having really obvious roots. I'm mid 40s and am quite happy to look my age.

I shaved my hair off in 2017 and I've grown it out. I don't hate my hair but I don't love it either. It is in good condition but it's a hundred different shades of grey. I do wish it was a stunning uniform colour like @PuppyMonkey and @Cocolapew

Anyone else going grey in 2022?
Cocolapew · 08/03/2022 17:22

Era your hair is gorgeous! Mine actually isn't very uniform. It looks like it is when my top layers are grown down but it's still dark underneath at the sides and the back is mixed.

I’m still going - mine is quite scattered and no “stripe” or “line” of roots, but I do have a Mallen streak type thing going on at both sides. My hairdresser says we should tone that silver once the colour is fully out. I have a very short, blunt bob with a curved fringe and an undercut, so it’s cut every five weeks. I think keeping the cut sharp is key for me, so I wouldn’t have even considered it in lockdown when I was hacking the fringe myself. I previously used salon colour (Koleston) matched by my hairdresser, at home.

EraOfTheGrey · 08/03/2022 17:57

@Cocolapew mine isn't dark in any place anymore but it does have some brown in there (I think).

Is my hair salt and pepper, not sure. The first photo was when it was short and the colour was quite dark. Second shows the different shades. Photos were taken in the same light.

I liked it when it was darker grey all over.

EraOfTheGrey · 08/03/2022 18:04

I love your colour Judy.

Cocolapew · 08/03/2022 18:10

I think your brown has definitely lightened more in the long hair photo . I love the short cut too.
Mine is pure white at front and sides then a mishmash through the rest of my hair.

If my hair was darker grey still I would definitely cut it short again.
Clarabe1 · 08/03/2022 18:19

I tried it, the grey is not an issue but there is too much of my mousy shitty hair colour still coming through. I gave up and coloured it. May try again later this year and get some expert advice.

20thCenturyWolf · 08/03/2022 18:25

OP, considered a 'root melt'? Brings your natural colour down & through your dyed colour, breaking it up & erasing any hard contrast/line between the dyed & natural colours. I had one done before lockdown (eerily - had no clue it would be months & months before any of us would be back in salons), to help along growing my natural colour down.
I'm embracing the grey, but only the sides of my hair are currently grey, with a tiny bit through the rest. I can't wait til it's grey all over, & I can match my silver fox DH. My DM has blanket dyed her hair her whole life, & it looks ridiculous. A woman of 79 with not a single grey hair. Pah! Though I know that when she was growing up the women who had grey hair were 'little old ladies' who couldn't be bothered with the blue/pink/lilac rinse, rather than the style icons rocking grey hair of the current world.

FourChimneys · 08/03/2022 18:29

Proud to be grey here. I have never put any dye on my hair at all. I think dyed hair looks ridiculous on older women, it's just fake (but I keep my opinions to myself obviously).

A good haircut is essential, as is the confidence to carry the grey look off.
