Ridiculously dry skin because of sodding Holland.

Have just spent a few weeks in Holland/Belgium and the skin around my nose and mouth is literally peeling. It hurts to smile (and I like smiling) and also to yawn (am very tired). I'm heading home to my warmer country now and would like to know if there's anything I can do to speed up the healing process? It's my birthday soon and would like to not look like I've attacked my face with a cheese grater.

I love this balm and use it on my cheeks, nose and hands. They also do a really good lip balm for lips, but I'd use this balm on the skin around my mouth.

I live inland in the Netherlands. There is a reason that I have lip balms and handcream in the kitchen, the bathroom, my handbag, the car, the downstairs loo, the bedroom, and the office! DS has the good sense to use his, DH goes for the cheesegrater effect. The air can be very dry.

CrushedPistachios · 11/01/2022 12:07

Lanolin or a nipple/breast feeding balm would be good. Drink at least 2/3 litres of water a day.

Blackbird1234 · 11/01/2022 12:13

LifeInAHamsterWheel I have that one! Except after finishing my wonderful tube of it I decided to repurchase it but in spray form, thinking it would work better but it has proven useless and just moisturises my bathroom floor instead of my face 😭 Will go repurchase it once back home and bathe in it.

Baronessbomburst I finally understand MILs obsession with the stuff. I've been in the country plenty of times at the same time of year and never had this problem before so was fully ill-prepared.

Crushedpistachios Definitely haven't been drinking enough water so will give that a try and look into nipple cream, thank you!

Vitamin e oil, I find it soothing as well as moisturising.

Justkeeppedaling · 11/01/2022 12:54

Vaseline is good, and cheap.

NowtSalamander · 11/01/2022 12:58

The best thing for any form of chapping is nappy rash cream. Sudocreme at nights, bepanthen during the day when you don’t want to look like a stage ghost!

Taoneusa · 11/01/2022 13:02

Can you get hold of Weleda calendula cream? In a big tube. It’s thick and white and intensely healing. Will definitely sort you out!

BusterGonad · 11/01/2022 13:07

Bepanthen nappy rash cream. I use it all the time on any dryness or sores.

Palavah · 11/01/2022 13:08

Epaderm cream

dontgobaconmyheart · 11/01/2022 15:52

This can happen to me in the UK to be honest, come winter.

perhaps try to hydrate with coconut water/electrolyte drinks rather than (or as well as) plain water and my go to is eucerin 5% urea face cream, or their atopicare range and then cleansing with an oil cleanser or cream cleanser and removing with a warm flannel- no foams, gels etc, no acid toners for a couple of weeks if you use them.

blistex intensive moisturiser cream for lips.

I don't find vaseline overly helpful and sudocrem I find to be even more drying but everyone's skin is different.

ouch321 · 11/01/2022 15:58

Apply thick cremes overnight. Slather it on. Eg blue Nivea tub. Coconut oil etc.

Luckyelephant1 · 11/01/2022 16:02

Slather on e45 every morning and night. I use it on my face first while it is still semi-damp. Then after a few minutes I put my normal moisturiser on top. Postpartum I went through a few weeks where my face was literally peeling and felt like it was cracking with every face expression. This helped lots. Also drink more water and take a multivitamin.

KittyRedSocks · 11/01/2022 16:09

Oh poor you. Weleda SKIN FOOD. It's a makeup artist secret. Thick & very soothing.
Also Jamaican Caster oil. It's incredible stuff. OH puts its round his dry sore nose after a cold has ripped the skin off. He couldn't believe how well it worked.

Blackbird1234 · 12/01/2022 11:14

Thank you all for the advice! I woke up to it being worse today so decided to pick up some La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume 5 as it was the easiest to find. Currently sat in the car looking like Casper with the amount I've slathered on so fingers crossed I look like the smoothest and most moisturised goddess in the world by the time we get home 😁

Happens to me on most long distance flights. Good old Nivea cream is really effective. I also like the Neal's yard wild rose balm really brings your skin back to life.

KiloWhat · 12/01/2022 16:31

Aquaphor. Not the lipbalm just the standard stuff.

EllaPaella · 13/01/2022 18:33

Eucerin cream is amazing for this. My son gets awfully cracked, raw flaky and red skin on his face in cold weather and this stuff is fabulous.

TheVanguardSix · 13/01/2022 18:35

I was going to say Cicaplast Baume B5.
It's solid gold and all you need. It will act fast to heal your skin. I love it!

Malibuismysecrethome · 13/01/2022 19:17

I have a little time of Aloe Vera Vaseline in a green top tin. It has sorted out my dermatitis and wragged cuticles and sore lips much better than more expensive creams and lotions.

Malibuismysecrethome · 13/01/2022 19:17

small tin sodding auto correct
