Help dress me!

I'm almost but not quite 30. I'm a size 4/6. I'm just a smudge under 5 foot. I'm a very pale brunette. I've just been offered a professional job. I have no idea what to wear and not much money to buy clothes. I've been a SAHM for a long time and this is my first "proper" job. I normally wear jeans and Tee shirts. For my job interview all of the women there looked so put together and stylish. I don't know how to do that. My first day is next Monday and as you can probably tell from my post I have managed to stress myself out about this quite a bit. How do I start looking for clothes? Outfits? Especially my size I just feel like I'm going to be drowned in real grownup clothes.

Thank you for reading to the end of my very long unparagraphed ramble!

What's your budget? I find if you are able to buy some more expensive bits (say reiss etc) the shop assistants are usually very helpful when dressing your shape/size. Could you try that?

SpiderHeart · 10/01/2022 19:24

Thank you, I probably only have around £300 is all together and that will have to go onto a credit card.

I would prefer to wear dress and jackets if possible. I think it's simpler and less to think about. Even petite trousers never fit me anyway.

You could try a John Lewis styling appointment. I literally booked one last Thursday for last Sunday. She had come up with outfit suggestions before our appointment. Amazing.

Next is a good place to start as they often do things in a petite range?

Would this kind of dress work in a corporate environment? And if it would what jacket would you wear? Worried about looking too funerally.

What type of job is it? In what industry?

Gardeningdream · 10/01/2022 20:59

Lace bodycon isn’t really known as coroporate to be honest, that’s more an evening out dress.

This one would work though,

OK I thought it might be. Thank you. I am just so clueless. I feel really stupid with it all - clothes and make up aren't my bag at all. Now I have this finance job and it's putting me off even starting. I will be in the (very sleek) office x 2 days per week and wfh 3 days.

I finished my degree already pregnant with DD. So I haven't really ever had to think about this stuff ever. Now I do and I feel overwhelmed with it all.

Thank you for the ideas.

I really like that thank you. The only thing is because I'm so tiny (4ft 11) the longer dresses in a petite range don't often fit me and are still too long. I will look for similar styles/ colours though.

I would invest in:
A plain navy knee length shift dress
A couple of bright or pastel coloured short cardigans (very few women wear jackets these days)
Matching (to the cardigans) short sleeved merino wool tops
A grey or camel or navy pair of trousers
A pair of nice comfortable shoes (ballarinas perhaps?)
A few necklaces or pendants to jazz up the above.

I wouldn’t buy more at the moment m. You will eventually find your style and observe what the others are wearing. These will be the basics of your wardrobe and you can add more later. You’ll probably be able to find some pieces at Matalan and Next or Uniqlo. I would play it safe and keep it plain (and boring?!) until you are more confident.

And…many congratulations and best of luck in the new job!
