Can I still wear my Fair Isle jumper?

Just that really? I have one and it's lovely and warm. But if I wear it now, will people see it as a Christmas jumper? I feel like they've been adopted into that category now....

I think fair isles have been adopted as Christmassy because they are a million times nicer than the brightly coloured, garish, acrylic reindeer/snowman Christmas jumpers, and also because you can wear them for more than two weeks of the year.

I got a dark reddish fairisle jumper for my 50th last year. It has become my “Christmas jumper” but I wear it all the time.

@crazyjinglist

Lovely jumper.

I still plan to wear mine from White Stuff, which I don’t think is too Christmassy.

Riverlee · 12/01/2022 07:50

white stuff jumper

It’s not letting me post a picture so here’s a link.

longtompot · 12/01/2022 07:55

@crazyjinglist love both your jumpers, especially the sleeved one. What pattern did you use? I have several in my Rav library but yet to start one. Thought best to make a plain jumper first. My knitting limit so far is socks and hats.

What defines genuine Fair Isle?

It's made by the knitters of FairIsle.

SirChenjins · 12/01/2022 08:51

That's lovely @Riverlee Smile

Here's mine - although because I'm 5' 1" it's not short on me!

crazyjinglist · 12/01/2022 16:18

@longtompot - the sleeved one is one of Jennifer Steingass' patterns. I think her designer name on Rav (and Instagram) is Knit.Love.Wool. She has lots of patterns for jumpers with different patterned yokes like that one. The one I did is called Goldwing. It's entirely knitted in the round with no sewing up (I loathe sewing up and am crap at it!)

longtompot · 12/01/2022 17:59

@crazyjinglist thank you! Now added to my library for when I am ready Smile

EllaPaella · 12/01/2022 21:12

@crazyjinglist here's mine, it's the Westray jumper by Eribe. Probably the nicest bit of knitwear I have ever owned 😊 I have worn it almost everyday since I got it in early December.

I grew up in Shetland and we wore Fair Isle all year! And learned how to knit it! As PP said, classic style that can be worn anytime and will last forever.

Shetland wool is very warm though and I'd struggle to wear a Fair Isle ganzie in the much warmer sooth.

Not always the case, @JaninaDuszejko . It's a style of knitting with some of the patterns being from Fair Isle but many of them from Shetland where knitting was a compulsory subject for both boys and girls into the 60s (and optional in the 70s).
Rainartist · 12/01/2022 22:01

Definitely wear it!

I've got my fairisle bedding on still.

Wow! I'd love to visit Shetland.

@EllaPaella - your jumper is gorgeous! I'd wear it all the time too.

I love knitting Fairisle. My only issues with making jumpers are sizing (I'm always worried they won't fit well) and sewing up - I need to get better at that!

I'd love to buy a traditional handmade jumper from Shetland/ Fairisle, but they cost an eye-watering amount!

Amelion · 13/01/2022 07:45

@crazyjinglist yours is beautiful - I wish I could knit!

In answer to your question @WineGetsMeThroughIt definitely all year! I have a Brora one and wear it a lot. A Fair Isle is for life and not just for Christmas Grin

drspouse · 13/01/2022 10:15

Those jumpers are so lovely!
I don't need to knit a Fair Isle jumper or indeed another jumper full stop but I am making a cowl in colourwork and I'll be making the scraps into mittens.

crazyjinglist · 13/01/2022 10:32

Knitting is the best hobby! Relaxing, interesting, creative, useful and very portable. Good for filling a spare 10 minutes or doing for hours! I learned in my late 30s and progressed pretty quickly to being able to make a jumper.

crazyjinglist · 13/01/2022 10:33

Oh and thank you! Blush
