Just as it says in the title.
I've had swollen eyes for the last 4 days since I used an eye pencil that I must be allergic to.
I've been taking Piriton to no avail. Sad
Any suggestions wise Mumsnetters. --
Apart from never using the sodding eye pencil again. It's been binned--.

Try opticrom eye drops and Liz Earle eyebright on cotton pads over your eyes.

Thank you

I second the above! Eyebright is just amazing and opticrom eye drops are really gentle (but effective). Pity the Piriton isn't helping though, those three things together are my hayfever eye staples. You could try a smear of Vaseline to help soothe too.

I use the antihistamine fexofenadine. It’s only available on prescription but you can get a private prescription online. It’s great for the allergy you describe, and non drowsy

Eyebright is pretty much witch hazel and water if you want to save some pennies.

Are you taking liquid piriton as it's stronger than the tablet form as you can take it multiple times a day?

Try washing your eyelids with baby shampoo to remove every last speck of said eye pencil.

Yes I use this too and it also helps when I get touches of eczema on my eye lids .

The four hourly Piriton is much better than the 24 hr but you have to get it from behind the pharmacy counter.

LadyEloise1 · 07/01/2022 11:28

Thank you all.
The pharmacist put me on Telfast which he said was stronger than Piriton.
Hoping that will make a difference. Though around my eyes were really swollen this morning- I took one last night.
If I go to the doctor to get a prescription it costs €65.
If I don't see the doctor but she writes me a prescription it's €35.
No NHS here sadly.

Telfast is fexofenadine. The best you can get!

Got any chamomile tea? Steep a couple of bags. Get it fridge cold. Use the cold tea to very gently cleanse the area and put the teabags on your eyes for instant relief.

Phenergan is great - I react badly to insect bites, and it's the only thing that brings them down and calms the itches. Should be available OTC.

But talk to your pharmacist, they can suggest the best option for you.

dontgobaconmyheart · 07/01/2022 11:50

It is definitely an allergic reaction and not an infection or a case of blepharitis? I wouldn't put any cosmetic products on the eye for now, eyebright or whatever included (which is expensive and stings me at the best of times)

Speak to pharmacist again, or ask for a second opinion. If you begin to suspect infection keep the area clean with sterilised water (boil it and cool it) and clean eye gently with a cotton pad. If there is any sign of crusting you can use mild baby shampoo in sterilised water on and across the lid.

Cold compress might offer relief otherwise and ibuprofen might help take down swelling.
