Pixie cut?

Bored of my hair. Thick, blondish and straight. Sits just below my shoulders. I tie it up as it annoys me round my face. I think it’s so boring and frumpy looking.

Do I go pixie? Had one in the past and lots of compliments but that was twenty years ago. I remember having to wash it every day but was quick to dry and style.

I want it a bit longer and feminine around my face but thinking of going fit the chop. My hair grows really slowly.

If I do go for it what do I did to style it every day?

I suppose it would depend on your face shape 20 years can change a person

Dailywalk · 05/01/2022 21:17

Greenrubber that’s true. I think I’d say I have an oval face. I don’t think my current style is doing anything for my face either.

You've reminded me to book a hair cut! My hair had been the same length as yours for years and I had it chopped off! Totally liberating - but it needs frequent trims. My face is now 'framed'. I can home dye without having to decorate the bathroom, lol.
I wash it in the shower every morning , towel dry, comb into position and finger dry while making packed lunches. Go for it!

Dailywalk · 05/01/2022 21:22

Icantremembermyusername any products you recommend? I think my hair would go frizzy if just left to dry naturally.

I had the chop about 4 years ago and I will never grow it again! It took a while to find the right hairdresser, but I now get mine cut every 5 weeks, as mine grows very fast. She does it exactly how I like it with lots of layering and feathering so its very short but has movement and body.

I wash it every morning in the shower and its dry by the time I get downstairs. A bottle of shampoo and conditioner last months! A bit of wax and I'm good to go. I also let it go grey over lockdown and have never had more compliments on my hair ever.

I went for a short asymmetric bob - not brave enough for a proper pixie! My hair is quite fine though. This was the photo I took with me (not me, sadly!)

I went for a pixie recently, I’m in my mid forties and starting to go white at the front. My hair is naturally ash blonde, fine but I’ve lots of it and it is poker straight.
I find this the easiest hairstyle to manage, I don’t wash it daily as I think it strips the oils out if your hair, I just spray it with water and comb it. When it’s dry I add some wax or texturising spray and give it ruffle and I’m good to go!

Dailywalk · 06/01/2022 07:35

chalkyc2 this looks lovely. Is it easy to manage?

Biscuitandacuppa that does sound easier than washing and drying every day.

I had similar hair to yours and considered a pixie cut a few months ago following another thread on here. In the end I went for a short “French bob” style. It’s really wonderful, and had made a huge difference to how I feel and look. Easy to wash and style. I may go shorter in the summer if I’m feeling brave!

I had a pixie for years in my 30s and I loved it. So easy to maintain, never a bad hair day. Wash, towel dry, style into shape quickly with fingers while adding a bit of 'putty' type product. Done and dusted in a matter of minutes. I didn't wash it every day, but did need to wet it and re-style as I would wake up with it sticking every which way. So easy and quick. So liberating. I threw away my hairdryer.

I grew it out when I had kids in my late-30s. In part because I didn't have the time for the regular trims required (every couple of months in my case), but also because it became a less flattering cut on me (face shape changed a bit, but mostly because I looked so knackered all the time and there's nowhere to hide with a pixie cut).

I miss it and when I'm older I fully intend to revert to it as I think it's a cut that can look fab on older women (see Judi Dench, although sadly I'm not blessed with her natural beauty and style!)

Dailywalk · 06/01/2022 20:35

Thanks for the responses. Interesting point that you can’t hide with a pixie as I’m wondering if I would need to put more effort into my face with a short hairstyle?!

I don’t wear makeup often and honestly don’t feel that I need to make an effort.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 07/01/2022 18:38

Watching with interest as I'm debating the same thing. Grew my hair for my wedding but now it just looks shit. Also I have trichotillomania and I cannot stop picking apart my split ends - it drives DH mad. So a pixie cut removes temptation right?

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 07/01/2022 18:39

NB: I may need to lose weight first - I'm a bit chubby of late and my face shows it.

Cailindeas35 · 07/01/2022 21:56

I have had a pixie for the last 6 years, love it. Wouldn't change back. I'm 42 now, 3asy to style, but you need to find a good hairdresser, that is skilled at short hair.

I lost all my hair to chemo this year and have now grown back a (very) short pixie cut. I bloody love it and have had so many genuine compliments. I wish I had done it through choice years ago. Being vain, the one plus of all my treatment is a shed a lot of weight and now my bone structure is far more pronounced and I think that helps with a short cut.

Puffalicious · 07/01/2022 22:11

Go for it. I've had short hair most of my life. I genuinely looked shit with long hair- I look back at photos and am horrified. I have hair very like the picture PP posted (the model one) at times a bit shorter and I've always had people comment on it.

I get it cut every 6 weeks. It's much harder to find a hairdresser who can cut short hair well- I've been with mine for years, he's worth his weight in gold. I'm greying now but was blonde, so it just looks like it's dyed that way and it suits my older face (I'm 50). I have a good hair day everyday and I think it stops me looking frumpy.

Milkshake by Fudge is a game changer. It's all I use- stops frizz and smooths whilst being light- brilliant for fine hair as I have fine hair but lots of it.

Too many women shy away from short hair when they would suit it far better.

Puffalicious · 07/01/2022 22:17

It's a bit shorter here, but you get the idea.

If you tie your hair back a lot....then in essence you are very used to exposing your face - you are giving yourself the equivalent of a pixt every day.. You could probably "Hide" more with a pixie fringe than a pony tail.

Hair grows.

But you do need a good stylist. I would recommend doing that stopping people with short hair on the street thing if you see a good cut - let someone else have been the guinea pig.

Also do a pinterest or similar of pixies you like and pixies you hate. Just your visceral reaction to them. This will help you work out if you want long fringe/short fringe, deep parting, flat crown, high crown etc.

Do it.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 08/01/2022 09:41

I used to have a pixie in my early twenties, then had it done again mid-30s and each time it looked great.

Had it done again just before xmas (early 40s) and ive got to say im regretting it. My face shape and hair colour have changed to the point where I dont think i can pull it off
