Outfits for Venice break?

Looking for inspiration for clothes for a weekend in Venice , early February. It's been so long since we've been away that I'm not sure what to pack. I'm size 14 and like fitted clothes as anything loose makes me look 2 stone heavier(hourglass)! I like classic navy, white and black, but don't know how dressy to go for eating out at night. We are staying in The Baglioni as a belated birthday gift for myself and husband. Any suggestions please as I'm trawling through Sales websites but am stuck!

Comfortable shoes, you will walk miles! Check quite when the floods are most likely, you may need to take wellies...

DidgeDoolittle · 04/01/2022 20:40

We went in early March. It was cold. We needed coats, comfortable shoes and an umbrella. The board walks were still in place from the floods a week or so earlier.

SilverHairedCat · 04/01/2022 20:42

Something warm! We also went in March and although we could occasionally sit in a sheltered piazza in sunshine in a tshirt and jeans, we needed coats most of the time.

And hell yes to sensible footwear - we walked MILES each day.

LesLavandes · 04/01/2022 20:43

A raincoat and layers and trainers

AnSionnachGlic · 04/01/2022 21:08

That's what I was thinking but wasn't sure. I suppose jeans, jumper and trainers/boots for day with a warm parka? What about night time? Will probably eat in hotel first night and then try few other restaurants. I like to dress up for dinner, to make an occasion of it. What about knee high boots and a fitted knee length dress or would that be over the top??

Comfortable shoes not affected too badly by water, check conditions just before you go as wellies might be required! Take a raincoat and umbrella

Madcats · 04/01/2022 21:40

Check weather forecasts.

We went for the Carnival about 20 years ago. It was cold, very cold. That WAS 20 years ago so global warming might have altered that.

I'd say that most northern Italians wear dark colours in winter. Black, grey (olive green if more rural).

Whatwouldnanado · 04/01/2022 21:42

How about a jersey wrap dress? Easy to pack and warmish walking to and from the restaurant. Have a great trip.

BeaLola · 04/01/2022 21:57

Echo re the footwear. What about thermal tops to layer underneath jumper or dress for evening.

frugalkitty · 04/01/2022 22:10

Thermals! The first time we went to Venice was valentines weekend and I've never been so cold in my life!

Pattygonia · 05/01/2022 07:49

Ooh lucky, lucky you! I echo what people say about comfortable shoes (and the likelihood of floods). If you want to dress up (and if you like this sort of thing) I’d really recommend a trip to the opera. It is £££ but it is an insanely beautiful place.
Have a great trip

Warm and waterproof clothes. Take an umbrella and wellies. Seriously. St Marks was ankle deep in water when we went, and in February it will be cold as well as wet.

TBH in February practicality wins over style. I don't recall seeing people dressed up very much in the evenings, and that was many years ago.

I would wear a coat with inside zipped pockets as well as they have a problem with pick pockets, especially on the vaporettos.

TheHuntingoftheSnark · 05/01/2022 08:06

Firstly, thermal tops, leggings and socks.
Jeans but maybe some other trousers as once jeans get damp they stay damp. A warm jumper/cardigan and big wool scarf/wrap. Coat hat gloves.
For evening, thermals, nice dress, nice boots and the scarf.
The Italians won’t dress up that much but who cares, it’s a special holiday for you so dress up if you want to.
This restaurant is lovely: www.ristorantelacolombina.eu/it/

We went about 8 years ago in October. Wet,windy and cold with warm sunny intervals about midday. Hotel flooded on ground floor, breakfast served on first floor stair lobby! Got the impression it happened often.
Bought wellies for about 14 quid available on most corners when the boardwalks go up.
I’d definitely go to the opera if I went back.
Enjoy.

Netaporter · 05/01/2022 08:31

Sounds lovely OP and the hotel will probably have wellies you can borrow. If you can, take a water taxi from the airport. The hotel can organise it for you. Obviously you can’t go to Venice without going to Harry’s Bar for lunch or dinner, it had a relaxed vibe when I was there. I’ve been lucky enough to stay at the Aman a couple of times and that is a great place to get dressed up for drinks or dinner. Ditto the Cipriani. The Doges Palace is also beautiful for a visit. Have a fab time.

mrssmiling · 05/01/2022 09:34

Can only echo practicality over style! Venice is a wonderful city to explore, walking around from day to night - in comfortable, waterproof footwear! We went in April - warm layers definitely needed. Wear what you like for evenings - but generally no need to dress up. We wandered around exploring the city for an hour or two after dinner - flat shoes and warm coat essential! Have a great time!

Blueuggboots · 05/01/2022 10:24

I've been to Venice many many times. I've never taken very smart clothes for the evenings. Unless you're going really high end, I wouldn't bother!!

fuzzwuss · 05/01/2022 11:02

Definitely a lot of warm stuff, the wind whips in from the sea in February.

AnSionnachGlic · 05/01/2022 12:36

Thanks very much for all your suggestions. Looks like comfy and warm is order of the day!

While I agree that warmth and practicality are key, the first time I went I took mostly 'walking' things, shoes, trousers, tops and a jacket. I was comfortable but felt I stood out as a tourist.

Subsequent visits I felt that I fitted in better wearing a proper overcoat, good scarf and knee boots. Fine thermals under wool trousers and good woollen tops. Statement earrings / necklace.

I spent as much time people watching to see how people looked both stylish and comfortable, in a well groomed way. Enjoy.

rifling · 05/01/2022 16:14

I would take something smart if you want to go to a high end restaurant or the casino. Otherwise there isn't really a dress code beyond wearing a proper coat rather than sportswear!

Santaisstilleatingmincepies · 05/01/2022 16:16

Double check your outfits.
Me and dh went away. The only trip last year.
Unpacked to get ready for evening meal and had packed 2 odd sandals!!

CrimbleCrumble1 · 05/01/2022 16:38

I do a lot of winter city breaks and tend to wear something smartish for the hotel breakfast such a tartan skirt, jumper and boots. Then get changed into really warm, comfortable walking around day wear. Then i have a different outfit for each evening, perhaps leather leggings and a nice jumper or blouse. Normally I pack mostly separates so I can mix and match.

I saw a lovely jersey v neck black dress in Benetton today styled with a bright red roll neck top underneath. It looked great - White Company had a similar dress with a polo shirt type collar. Would give you an option to keep warm if it is very chilly or to have two different looks from one dress if you wore it two nights in a row.
