If you're early 40s, which brands do you like on ASOS?

Hi,

Feel like spending some cash on new clothes. I occasionally find something I love on ASOS, but I'm beginning to find the sheer amount of stuff they have a bit overwhelming. If you're early 40s, size 12ish, are there any particular brands on there that you like? I just want tops that aren't too short, dresses that aren't too sweaty, knitwear that isn't too boxy, sleeves that aren't too fussy, no cut out bits.

For what it's worth, in case anybody else also wants answers to this, I found lovely, plain white and black v-neck t-shirts on there. They're Selected Femme. Hope that helps somebody.

& other stories, rains, then sports brands- Nike etc. I’m late 30s, 5’8” and a 12.

IvorCutler · 04/01/2022 13:37

I do find the majority of asos to be too cropped/clingy/synthetic for me though.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 04/01/2022 13:41

I don't do ASOS any more (I'm early 40s too).

The models are all teenagers, it felt like time to step off!

IvorCutler · 04/01/2022 13:45

I agree @NightmareSlashDelightful I only go there to price check things I’m interested in in the sales from the brands I mentioned!

IvorCutler · 04/01/2022 13:46

I find zalando much better

CeliaCanth · 04/01/2022 13:53

Another vote for Zalando

Ciderplease · 04/01/2022 14:07

Never looked at Zalando, will have a go now. Thanks!

& other stories too, but tbf their own site is better with more options! Avoid ASOS own stuff IMO

Bunce1 · 04/01/2022 14:20

Stradivarius
Vila
Selected femme
And other stories
Whistles
Monki

AhThisAgain · 04/01/2022 18:01

I ordered loads from ASOS recently and sent almost all back and concluded I'm too old for it (late 30s). Majority seemed very poor quality, shiny fabrics and weirdly shaped. Or perhaps its just a bad season!

Bunce1 · 04/01/2022 18:19

Asos Own brand is dire as is quite alot of what it stocks. Cheap fast fashion. I do like some of what they stock and they have good beauty brands.

I'm my late 30s when I was a working mum, I loved Oasis (cute tops and dresses) and a bit of Topshop (coats, jeans and tops), now I'm early 40s and I've moved on a bit, stay at home mum, so no dressing up for work and obviously Covid, I've become a bit addicted to Mango, helped by the fact I live overseas and its one of the few familiar brands to me. I like that they do good basics, cotton tshirts, well fitting jeans in various styles and colours (black, grey, washed out blue, indigo). They often have dresses made of viscose rather than polyester, they follow fashions but I like their take on it. The models they use on the website are not teenagers and a few are actually quite a bit older. I'm not a size 12 though, a 14 to 16, I'm tall with big boobs and most of their stuff fits me well. Where I live it's a bit overpriced due to taxes etc but in the UK I'd say its well priced and the majority is well made, some of my cardigans have bobbled but I knew they would due to the fabric content. Shops I can't work with are H&M, such ill fitting stuff, and Zara pisses me off as they always mess up a perfectly fitting dress with huge 80s shoulders or some other monstrosity. I like their jewellery though.

BusterGonad · 04/01/2022 18:57

That was ment to start with, when I was in my mid to late 30s

BusterGonad · 04/01/2022 18:58

Sorry, I completely missed the point. I don't know if Mango is on ASOS!!!! 😬

Thatswhatmamasaid · 04/01/2022 19:15

Asos seem to be on par with Boohoo and the like these days. I haven't bought clothing from there in years and I'm late 30s.....

bookish83 · 04/01/2022 19:39

Asos Design brand do a lot of cotton and linen fabrics. Some nicer classic style clothes

& other stories and whistles too. Avoid polyester!

BangingOn · 04/01/2022 19:41

I find it very hit and miss. 90% of what I buy is returned, but I do have the occasional gem from their own label that looks great and has worn well, like a beautiful bias cut checked skirt that is perfect for the office.

Otherwise I buy & Other Stories and Whistles when there are discount codes, as well as the usual beauty brands.

Loved the mango stores when we went to Tenerife - they looked so subtle and stylish compared to uk stores and it's not ££££
Bagelsandbrie · 04/01/2022 22:36

I’m 41 and love Asos but I don’t have particular brands I like, I just check everyday in “what’s new” and sort by newest and then I get to see everything that comes in. Yeah there’s a lot of crap and stuff I wouldn’t wear but my 19 year old dd would but it’s a huge, huge online store so you just have to keep browsing.

plantastic · 05/01/2022 00:01

I use them a fair bit as I live overseas and they're one of the few shops that ship- otherwise I'm stuck with Next, M&S and Boden, none of which I like. I'm tall so get most work trousers there (and Cos when I visit Europe)- yes the fabrics aren't amazing but they do fit. And Other Stories, Monki, and some of the Asos Design stuff- you can search on fabric so exclude the polyester. I do like Whistles as well. Also good for coats and trainers but I think otherwise the shoe selection has gone very downhill.

Deathraystare · 06/01/2022 09:25

Well I have one foot in the grave at 62 (yep a whole year older now!). I very occasionally see stuff, but being plus sized it is mainly aimed at young girls who like to draw attention to boobs, stomach, thighs and arse, so not much material covering anything!

Gwenhwyfar · 08/01/2022 13:37

Yes, Mango where I live (on the continent) is classic, but too trendy for me in the UK.
