Gandys jackets

Hello,

I'm going to the Lake District end of April and need jacket/coat as the ones I have just aren't suitable. I found this lovely one from Gandys, are they good brand? Will this sort of jacket be OK? gandysinternational.com/collections/women-coats-and-jackets/products/burnt-orange-helsinki-hybrid-softshell-padded-jacket-womens

I hate being constricted which is probably why I don't have any big warm padded coats. This one looks good for layering?

Any recommendations helpfull!

I don’t know the brand, but surely it depends on what you’ll be doing in the Lakes? If you’re running from a car into a pub or shop, it is fine, but if you’re planning serious walking or climbing etc, then I’d want something properly waterproof, rather than water-resistant — and what would you be wearing on your legs?

Bit over the top for the Lakes in April.

As a PP says, likelihood is it will rain. I would reccommend layering - a proper raincoat, a warm gilet to put underneath, and a jumper to go under that.

For example:
Raincoat 1
Raincoat 2

Gilet 1
Gilet 2

Midlayer 1
Midlayer 2

That way you will be nice and dry, and have several options to add warmth depending on the weather (April might be 5 degrees or 20 degrees!).

What rbe78 posted.

The Lake District is green for a reason. Rain,
You need a thin waterproof hooded parka style jacket. Wear a fleece or jumper under it.

I've been wearing a padded jacket to go to shops over Christmas and found it too warm. I only had a t-shirt on underneath it

The lakes in April aren’t necessarily particularly cold (although I walked through a snowstorm at Easter in Grizedale forest once).

But as others say, what will you be doing here? If you’re doing proper walking style is the last thing to think of. You’ll need decent four seasons boots with a good grip and pretty waterproof. You should wear layers topped by a good waterproof jacket. I tend to wear running leggings but also tights underneath if it’s early in the season (around Easter tide). It gets cold once you get up a bit, particularly above the tree line on the high fells. The wind can hit you then so you need gloves, hat, scarf etc.

If you’re being a tourist then wear your town gear with decent waterproof shoes, a waterproof coat and a hat.

I like everything about Gandy's, their products are really nice quality and their business ethos is great too. Can't help you regarding walking in the Lakes, but highly recommend the brand!

TeddyTonksGirlfriend · 04/01/2022 11:55

I have this jacket in teal and love it. If you want to layer I'd go up a size as it's relatively fitted.

It's shower proof but not suitable if you're gonna be going up and down mointains- if that's the case, you want base layer, more layers and a thin but excellent quality waterproof.

If you're planning more pootling round the shops and cafes in Windermere, it's perfect. Either way- buy it and if not suitable for the lakes trip, you'll have a fab jacket for other times.

LaChanticleer · 04/01/2022 12:01

I tend not to wear padded jackets for proper walking in Spring-summer-autumn as they are too hot. You need layers. Getting Skiddaw or Helvellyn is warm work at any time outside of winter.

Penguin3020 · 04/01/2022 12:58

Thank you all for your suggestions, I think i will get it as I really like the jacket and get another waterproof one. I'm not sure how the jacket is '' bit over the top' for the Lake District though? It's just a jacket?

We will be walking around lots and exploring, nothing too strenuous I don't think. I have water proof trousers and leggings so will take those. I have boots but on the hunt for some new ones.

I think the OTT was in terms of how the jacket might be too warm for April

rbe78 · 04/01/2022 14:11

@Penguin3020

Yes, over the top as in it looks too warm - not fashion-wise!

ListenToChickens · 04/01/2022 14:15

Gandys are good quality, but that jacket will not be the best in a Lakes drizzle/downpour. I'd still get it though - it's cosy! My Paramo was a top investment 20 years ago. Still going strong. It's very soft fabric and doesn't feel like a waterproof. Very comfortable. Enjoy your trip!

LaChanticleer · 04/01/2022 15:12

Who said it was OTT?

rbe78 · 04/01/2022 15:25

@LaChanticleer Me! I'd be sweating buckets by the time I was halfway up the first hill if I wore that walking in April!

LaChanticleer · 04/01/2022 15:50

Oh right! Yes so would I, but I’m a hardy northerner and also I don’t think the OP is a serious fell walker, so the jacket is probably fine for being a tourist.
